CentOS 4.3 Multi-Platform Release
hughesjr writes "The CentOS development team has announced the availability of CentOS-4.3 for the i386, x86_64, and ia64 architectures. Major changes in this version of CentOS include: upgraded update system - this new system provides more that 100 total mirrors for updates and picks geographically close and non-stale mirrors based on our master server's content; Frysk, InfiniBand Architecture (IBA), and z/VM hypervisor added; see the release announcement for more information. ISO's are also available for download on their site."
First of all, I would like to applaud the folks at CentOS development team for such a quick update. I personally think that the new release of CentOS was a very good move in marketing, as its timing was directly analogous with the postponement of Windows Vista.
When the folks at Windows finally decide to release the anticipated Vista, it will prove that most if not all Linux systems are paltry to Vista in network security, and that CentOS is much more uncostly in its total cost of ownership. Furthermore, the start-up costs of CentOS are much cheaper than its superior - Vista, and the early release will mean that most users are forced to stay with CentOS despite their naturalistic bond to Windows.
My experience with centos has been pretty good. Anytime someone asks for a 'warez' or simular request, just refer them to centos, as it is really the same thing (from the same sources) as Red hat enterprise linux. The only problem with centos is its lack of a good package management system. This of course comes as a direct result of using RHEL sources. YUM and RPMs are just not easy enough for a general user to figure how to install third party programs. It would be nice if they got a decent version of APT working and used that as there default package managment system. Also, a new update system would be nice.
Wow, and you just got THE ORIGINAL POINT I WAS MAKING.
It only took you an entire rant and an extra post to bounce your head off the clubie branch. +1 insightful!
