Super Smash Brothers Wii, Featuring Solid Snake

mcc writes "In a surprise news conference this evening, Nintendo unexpectedly revealed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, and released a promo video of the title. Smash Bros. Brawl will feature online play; a Nintendog item that blocks your view of the playfield by jumping up on the screen and demanding to be petted; bizarre Dragonball Z style superattacks; your choice of traditional Gamecube or motion-sensing Revmote control; and new characters in the form of Samus (without the suit), Meta Knight, Kid Icarus (!), and... Konami's Solid Snake, complete with a cardboard box he hides in. The only bad news is despite earlier reports it would be a launch title, Smash Bros. Brawl will not be out until 2007."

From the Wikipedia article on it:
Japanese fans are currently being asked to submit their desired characters and themes to Nintendo's website, the most popular of which will be incorporated into the game. It is currently unknown if this will eventually be opened for overseas fans as well.
The site where you can vote (Japanese only I guess) and the IGN article on it.

The XBox 360 had a mild welcome in Japan ... Is Nintendo playing favorites in order to win a solid monopoly on the Japanese market?

Maybe I'm just jealous. I want to vote for Bub & Bob (Bubble Bobble) as a counter pair to fight those damned Ice Climbers!

That doesn't seem to be true from what I can see. The following is taken from the article at IGN.

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.

"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."

IGN's quote is taken out of context. Gamespot's is more in detail.

Another question was presented to Sakurai. "How will Super Smash Bros. Brawl take advantage of the Wii controller?" The designer said he had been working with different ideas, and had found that too much use of the controller's pointing and motion-sensor functions was not a good thing. He then dropped a hint, saying gamers may not want to throw away their old GameCube controllers, which the Wii supports. Sakurai then said he wants to support the console, but offer something different than other Wii games.

He's not saying that you can't play it with the Wii controller. Just that it probably won't use many (or any) functions of it. Keep in mind that SSB doesn't really need much more than an analog stick and two buttons, which the controller and nunchaku have.

And if that's all you use, you could use a GameCube controller as well, if you felt like it.

      B for special attack.

Original SSB (that is what I said, isn't it? there wasn't an 'M' in there):

      Analog stick: move
      A: attack
      B: other attack

The C buttons were jump, but so was Up.

I did forget about grab and dodge, however.

Okay, that's an analog stick and four buttons. Which... you still have.

Metal Gear has never been a exclusive title. It got it's start on Computers/NES. While it did the Square thing for a bit, the Game Cube has a Metal Gear Solid 2 remake on it called Twin Snakes. Interesting enough, its MSG's own creator who begged to be in SSB. He wanted to be in SSB melee but it was too late to bring Snake on board.

They have followed the same path over the past two decades

Nintendo's not a 20-30 year old company like Apple.

Nintendo's a one hundred and sixteen -year old company.

Nintendo has always made sure to expand its market to ensure that it's not ever in any danger. They own the Seattle Mariners, branched out into the taxi business as well as sex hotels and vacuum manufacturing.

Video games really made them a household name, but Nintendo has always been worried about being tied to a too-small portion of the populace. Then again, you don't get to be a 116 year old company without that worry.
