4x4 Chips, Opening AMD's Architecture
Nom du Keyboard writes "Once upon a time open slots in a PC that anyone could build a card for were a good idea. PCs with them sold better than PCs without them. Now AMD is proposing another new socket that will be open for plugging in of 3rd party co-processors directly on the processor bus." They've also announced a 4x4 chipset, meant to counter Intel's Core 2 Duo chips. From the article: "Socket 4x4 will have a more immediately impact. Set for a release in the latter half of this year, it essentially lets you combine two dual-core Athlon 64 X2 or Athlon 64 FX chips to create a quad-core desktop PC now ... AMD made the point that Socket 4x4 also provides a more flexible upgrade path for a single motherboard system by letting you start with one chip and add another later on. AMD didn't talk pricing, but you can bet neither the Socket 4x4 motherboards, nor systems that use it to include two dual-core CPUs will be cheap."
Instead of modding this asscracker's unfunny junk up, why not consider helping me out? I was recently the victim of a targeted modbombing in which a number of far-right extremists modded several of my comments troll for no reason.
I'm proposing that you put your points to good use and reverse the damage done in this terrorist attack on my Slashdot credibility. Come on, it's not like there's anything else worth modding or commenting on coming in this story.
If you haven't foed me yet, what are you waiting for?
I'd rather plugin a SPARC or PPC. Other than that very little interest for AMD or INTEL or anything IA32/64/AMD64 whatever surfaced here. Tell you what, more exciting than anything WinAMD or Wintel have to offer is the fact that my IBM keyboard did not die when I spilled coffee into it the other day. Check this out:
/home /export/home / whenever you hit return?
This keyboard is working again. At least I think that's what's the case here.
The return key is in working order. I will now say something special about
the letter A: Apple! I will now say something about the letter b: Bitch! Yes!
Indeed! I will say something about the letter c: Cunt! d: Dog! e: Eccoli! f:Fuck!
G: Gaschamber H: Hitler! I: Iodine! J: Jews! K: Killerwatt! L: Lost (the poison
gas) M: Martial Law! N: Nationalsocialism! O: OpenEuthanasia 2.0 P: Population
Control, Q: Quebec the french hate state. R: Radiation treatment S: Sickness
T: Tango Uniform! U: Uranium (the kind you breathe in Iraq), V: Venona, W Whiskey
-Pee... ! X: X-rays that burn your lungs, Y: Yankee doodle went to his slaughter
riding on an M1, Z: The Zargon of Arkadia where all comes together. Those were
all the letters from a-z. Now for some Numbers: 1 - one World (one Reich one
Fuehrer) 2 - 2 letters to rule them all: UN. 3 - The Trilateral Commission 4 -
No hope for you! 5- Five - Lucifer's five finer points. Six : 666 7 - Seven
finer points to pierce your chest. 8 - Trouble, 9 die you swine 0 0 0 - Zero
Tolerance! Null Toleranz! 0123456789 abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. Important keys.
Now let's try the shift key and the numbers: Fuck you, you: !@#$%^&*()_+
and then the without the shift one more time: 1234567890-=. Okay, what about the
key at left in the first row: `. Okay and with shift: ~. Fine. What about those
keys on the right let's write something in c and see if they work: a line from
a program of the army if (detention_camp_id[i]) { execute_inmates(detention_camp_
id[i]; if (firing_squad || vx_nerve_gas) puts("Useless eaters terminated\n"); }
Okay These keys work too. Oh and we incidentally verified the semicolon ; too and
the key beside it which when not shifted gives us the ' and when shifted the ".
Great! Let's check out those keys at the bottom row of the keyboard: if (ab) { divide / 0)? Are you sure that's what you want? Punctuation is working to
at the lower levels, I might add and interject with a comma and bring this sentence
to a full stop with a period. That leaves us with control (on both sides) which we
will now verify: Watch these control sequences and see what they do to your
terminal: I suppose the control key works on the left, now what about the one on
the right? Oh that one works too. Great. Let's see what about the escape key,
here's ESC-c for you that should reset your terminal: ^[c . Did it reset? Hope
it did and hope it didn't log you out just yet. Hey did you know that some terminal's
allow macros to be programmed with ESC-Sequences and assigned to arbitrary keys? How
would you like this one: rm -r -f
Let me try the alt keys now. Yes they work, you have to take my word on that though.
Finally let's try caps-lock: IT'S MY KEYBOARD AND I CAN SCREAM IF I WANT TO, SCREAM
IF I WANT TO (screamed to the tune of "it's my party and I can cry if I want to").
Right. Function keys are next now. Tell you what, they all worked. Okay so let's
see combined with the space bar it's safe to say that the left side of my keyboard
is working again. Now this is just a PC keyboard (though on of those nice clickety-
click IBM ones which they don't make anymore that I know of). Let's test PrintScreen.
Nothing happened. But that's probably because I had anything that gets run on Printscreen.
Let's try Alt-SysRq. Oh yes. The Sysrq key works, at least I get its scan code. How
about scroll-lock. Yeah it locks my scrolling alright. Well then let's move on to
Pause. If this were DOS alt-break would have broken
If FAN NOISE and Melted laptop plastic is your bag then sure buy AMD mobile chips :)
Personally I value quietness and low power.
AMD's new slogans. "Can you hear me now?" "Do you want fries with that melted laptop?"
AMD lost the mobility race. Intel won. Sure AMD are great performers, if want to be deaf.
