611 Defects, 71 Vulnerabilities Found In Firefox

Danny Begonia writes, "Some folks at Klocwork examined the large and complicated code base of the popular open source browser, Firefox. Overall, Firefox is a well written and high quality piece of software. Several builds were performed on the code, culminating in the final analysis of version 1.5.0.6. The analysis resulted in 611 defects and 71 potential security vulnerabilities. The Firefox team has been given the analysis results, and they will determine if or how they will deal with the issues." What are your thoughts — do Firefox and the open source community welcome this kind of analysis?

I don't know ... I've lost at least one /. account from criticizing Linux. And hey, maybe my criticisms did count as flamebait. But when I'm limited to two posts a day to address like thirty responses, most with obvious falsities, that *kinda* puts a damper on debate about the issue.

Also, I think that to the extent that coders make their code hard to follow, they are compromising the ideals of open source.

I think Microsoft woudl benefit from this type of analysis too. I am a fan if IE and use IE only. I have never had a problem with it because I know how to surf the internet. Theres just things you do and don't do. Call me a creature of habit, but I just don't care for Firefox because it takes several seconds to launch (i know its petty, but oh well) and that everything is layed out differently. Not too differently, but different enough that I want IE back.

That's actually a good idea. How about they add a Linux Firefox or KDE Firefox while they're at it? I'm sick of having to use GNOME Firefox because it's the only one available.
