First Swede Convicted For File-Sharing Now Cleared

Caine writes, "A 29-year old Swede, who was the first to be convicted under last year's new file-sharing laws, has been cleared on appeal. The court of appeal did not consider the screen dumps provided by the Antipiracy Bureau enough evidence to be able to convict the man. Since the crime does not carry a high enough punishment under Swedish law to allow for a search of the defendant's house, this means it will be virtually impossible to prove file-sharing crimes in the future."

You will not last long in Uppsala Sweden, the taxes are high and language barriers will prevent you from getting a date or a job. Forget about visa issues.

I have never been to Sweden, but I recall reading an article recently that the Swedish were growing increasingly intolerant of foreigners who didn't speak Swedish. The article even mentioned that some local official was trying to pass a (completely unenforcable) law making it illegal to speak any other language on the street.

It would be like the police being allowed to shoot people they see speeding.

This reminds me of an amusing conversation I had with an American a few years ago. It went something like this:

Me: The local police in the UK often don't carry guns.
    American: What? That's terrible!
Me: People here think it's a good thing.
American: But what if they see someone stealing something, for instance, and then they run away. How do they stop them?
Me: The policeman runs after them and tries to catch them.
American: But what if the criminal runs faster?
    Me: They get away.
    American: That's dumb.
Me: So a policeman in the USA would shoot a shoplifter if they ran away?
American: If they didn't stop, I guess they would.
    Me: That's dumber.

No, that's not nuff said at all. Not here in Sweden, at least. We do NOT get what we pay for.

We pay on average over 60% of our income in taxes. That's when all taxes, even the "hidden" ones, are counted which they naturally should always be.

To put it another way, in a week we work from Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon for someone else. From Wednesday afternoon to Friday we get to keep and dispose of our own salaries.

We pay the highest taxes of the industrialised democratic world. We do NOT have anywhere near the best social/medical services, education, military defence, police et c. of the industrialised democratic world. We're among the worst in all those respects and more, actually.

I fear that our new government won't get to change this in any meaningful way during the measly 4 years it will exist, before The Party (the omnipotent Social Democrats and its henchmen on every level of society) will take over again as usual.
