Best 2+ Player Video Games?

Twinbee asks: "I was wondering what you lot would consider the best 2+ player games of all time. Apart from games for mixed skill players, this has never been asked on Slashdot before, so it would be interesting to see. From my own experience and research, it looks as though a top 50 would include games such as Streetfighter 2, World of Warcraft, Speedball 2, Super Mario Kart, SWIV, Ikaruga, Stunt Car Racer, Super Monkey Ball, Puzzle Fighter, and Mario Party. Whether they are competitive or cooperative, Slippery slope or Perpetual comeback, 2-player or multiplayer, retro or cutting edge, I want to hear them! I would prefer MMOG games not to be included, unless there is a good deal of interaction between the people in the 'same house' (e.g. perhaps they can team up and play against the world)."

No, not the crappy 3D ones where you're constantly fighting the camera.

Original old-school Gauntlet. You can get copies of it in one of the Capcom greatest hits collections for Gamecube or PS2, I believe.

I can't really think of anything else comparable.

I've learned a lot since I came to college.

Diablo II is a great deal of fun over TCPIP with a roommate.

    Mario Part is the bomb.

Punching to the stomach is more effective than unplugging the controller.

Everyone should have a favorite fighter game (DBZ: Budokai 3, for me and my friends....none of whom can even stand Dragonball).

Halo 2, why not very fun (for me) in single player, actually has a rocking multiplayer mode.

Playing against other people on the room IS better than playing online.

      DBZ: Budokai 3,

This is a really good game, even if you didn't know about dragonball before. My friend picked it up and was never a DBZ fan. I was a fan for a while when I was introduced to DBZ and I still enjoy it to a degree. I've recently traded this is for the new Tenkachi 2. The first one was 'ok' but the lack of in game transformations kind of blew. I have hopes this one will be ask enjoyable... or I'll have to go and buy DBZ3 again. hehe (darn it, I just have to wait for the Wii now. I have the stinking game!)

      Cheers,

Worms and Worms 3D. These are all-time classics. In my opinion these will provide most fun and you can't take these games too seriously.

Why hasn't M.U.L.E. been mentioned yet? It's awesome and unique. 4-player for the Commodore 64.

Starcraft should probably also be mentioned, one of the most played games ever released.

Hehe, reminds me of playing RE4!

I would say that my favorite multiplayer games would be...

    • ToeJam and Earl (GENISIS)- You could walk in any direction freely, the screen would split and come back together if you where close enough to each during your exploration of the map.
    • Rock and Roll Racing (SNES)- If one person won, you both won. So, you could do all kinds of strategy where the other person purposely is trying to take out the other trucks.
    • Metal Warriors (SNES) - I cannot remember then
    • Rampage - the original arcade game. 'Nuff said
    • Any of the old Konami games for NES. LifeForce, Jackle, etc.
    • Techmo Super Bowl for the sports players.

One of the best multiplayer games ever was M.U.L.E., one of the many innovative games produced by the old Electronic Arts (back when they promoted programmers and game designers like rock stars).

Another good one, as many have mentioned, was the original Gauntlet. Along the same lines, the Baldur's Gate games for the PS2 were pretty good.

Interesting list, I agree about Rock&Roll racing, it is one of the games I played with my brother long time after SNES emulators (with networking) appeared, over telephone lines.

This ask slashdot question is quite convenient, I have been wandering which games to play. My girlfriend likes playing video games but we have had hard time finding good multiplayer games.

The ones we usually play are N64 ones (yep, in emulator, yep pir8ed, yep so what?):
    - Worms Armaggedon (we even managed to get one absoluteley non-player friend to try it and he LIKED it).
    - Armorines (its nice but I *hate* to play FPS with joystick...
    - Army Men Air Combat (very fun to play).
    - Mario Tennis (nice to play in pairs, although I HATE that it is not possible to play some kind of tournament in multiplayer...)
    - Mario Golf (okey, although we dont play it as much as the others)
    - Mario Kart (we played it a lot but now we have finished all the tournaments and it got boring [but it is a good option]).

Overall, what I want are cooperative multiplayer games. I do not like P v P games, thats why I dont like one of everybody's favorite game (Smash Bros) I played it a bit (my girlfriend loves it...) but I never liked it... I felt it was like a half assed fighting game (sorry, I am of the Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat/Mk2 fighting games generation).

So, if anyone has any other recommendation I would also love to read it... I agree that SNES has several of the best games made, multiplayer or not, darn, we played Chip&Dale rescue rangers (NES) and Goofy's adventure (the SNES one about the island, quite nice coop).

Doesany of you remember Cybernator? I remember shitting my pants when it got out for the SNES (it was just SOO COOL)... unfortunately it is not multiplayer (sorry, just remembered those times =oP )

Ohh! and dont forget the SNES racing game which you could play with up to 4 friends, what is its name? you participated in races in the sand (top view) with trucks. That was quite fun...

and RPM Racing was also good ...
now get out of my lawn =oP (except you the one playing Warlords)

I was introduced to that game early this year, and have been playing it frequently with friends/relatives ever since. One of the things that is so great about it is the flexibility of the number of players. It is still really fun with 2, 3, or 4 people. With some expansion sets, you can get up to 5 or 6, but I haven't played with that many yet.

  12. Star Control 2: Super Melee. by plams · · Score: 2, Insightful

Star Control 2 in Super Melee mode. It's basically a 1-on-1 space combat arcade game, but it has a lot of depth. There are 25 very different and unique ships to choose between and they all have advantages and disadvantages; some are slow, others are fast. Some rely on raw firepower while others rely on strange innovative devices like tractor beams. Before the game starts each player chooses ships for his fleet and that makes it suitable for tournament play among friends.

You can get the GPL port here (GPL). Oh, and when you're tired of blasting your friends out of the sky, the single player game itself is probably one of the best ever made.
