MyEclipse 5.1.1 GA Supports Eclipse 3.2.2 & Vi

      I actually read the article in the hope that it would be some Eclipse/vi hybrid environment. Finally a java editor where the autocompletion is faster than typing by hand.
      No such luck, I guess.

      Actually, just yesterday I was praying for VI key bindings for eclipse. The headline got me excited. Does anyone know if there actually exists a vi plugin for eclipse?

      There is a quite decent vi plugin for Eclipse (payware, but worth it if you don't want to fight your muscle memory.)

      I'll just stick to vim, it's a better vi than vi ever was. Multilevel undo alone makes it worth it.

    MyEclipse is something that you have to pay for, this is seperate to the generic Eclipse. The fact that this is a link to a pay for product where a major feature being that it works on Vista (I would wonder how many of the Slashdot care if it works on Vista, let alone acquire it when they can put together Eclipse themselves). So he would be commenting on the actual product being linked to if your read the slashvertisement/article/press release. IMHO its an ad.

      Not a great deal.

      Last time I used it, it had a few plugins (Spring for example) and wizards included automatically, but nothing for which there weren't adequate or superior alternatives.

      On the whole I prefered Eclipse with the Web Tools Platform and any other plugins specific to the tasks I was actually involved in. Unless it's advanced a great deal, don't bother.

      It's not a buggy piece of shit like WTP is. Granted, MyEclipse actually uses components of WTP, just not the buggy ones (app server support for example, which is very important).

    I use Eclipse, and I don't even have any idea what this article is about. What is MyEclipse? What is a GA release? What does it have to do with Vi? What is Eclipse WTP? Why should I care if it's "fully I18n enabled"? Could you please explain anything about what you're talking about?

      MyEclipse is an add on that enhances the base Eclipse package. www.myeclipseide.org for more info.

      GA Release means General Availabiliy (a full release as opposed to a M releae, or milestone)

      Vi looks like a typo, they meant Vista, I think.

      Eclipse WTP is the Eclipse Web Tools Project.

      I18n is shorthand for "internationalization".

      All of which you would already have know if you actually used Eclipse like you said.

      That comment of yours doesn't even make sense; you're inferring that I said I used Eclipse but I don't, and that using it somehow bestows knowledge of third-party extensions upon the user. What would be the point of lying about that? Are you just trying to start a fight?

      I don't do web development, anyway, so I'm not at all familiar with the WTP. And I know what "I18n" means -- the question is, why do I care? How is it relevant to the rest of the summary?

      Besides that, my post was intended as less of an inquiry and more of a comment on how horribly written the summary is.

      I was so excited, too. I've wanted vi support in Eclipse for ages now. I even started a plugin (http://viclipse.sourceforge.net/) that didn't get very far.

      Don't be so hard on him. I use Eclipse, and I do know what MyEclipse is, and have used it, but I have never called release software "GA", and have never use "l18n" as shorthand for "internationalization". Furthermore, I am not familiar with this Web Tools Project, though it sounds like something I better look up, since that's what I do -- use Eclipse to build web stuff. (Hey, I use whatever tool my boss tells me to use, but maybe he missed a good one.)

      Anyway, the mods were right, you were +5 Informative, if maybe -1 Haughty.

      That's funny, I use Eclipse and I had no idea what MyEclipse, GA, M and WTP meant! I must have forgotten to install the InstantKnowledge(tm) plugin :p

      Btw, Eclipse has many plugins, some of which have nothing to do with web development or java ...

      I read the crap summary and had no idea what MyEclipse is, what GA or WTP stands for or that Vi is supposed to be Vista. I've been using Eclipse for four or five years now, just not with commercial extensions or plugins that I don't need.

      That you were not modded troll to oblivion is amazing. Bullshit disguised as superiority is far more repulsive than the ordinary kind.

    He was referring to the fact that some company has taken Eclipse, slapped it on a box and charged a yearly "membership" fee as well as rebranding it "MyEclipse".

    The names a bit confusing to me. Isn't it more "MyEcplise" when its .. free? If I'm paying for it then I think its really "YourEclipse" that I'm just renting. Or maybe the My just refers to them in the first place.

    MyEclipse is an extension of Eclipse with a bunch proprietary J2EE build tools. There are similar free tools available as well, like Netbeans 5.5.

    When I came into my new job I was given MyEclipse as my dev environment. At first I was a little wary, cause I asked all the same questions everyone else seems to be asking now. Whats the big deal, why am I using this thing when Eclipse is free and I can do everything this does?

    After some time using it though, I realize there are some very useful features. For example, you can easily add struts, springs, and hibernate support to your application. There is a very handy GUI based struts config tools, as well as a way to generate hibernate mappings and all your POJOs automatically using a connection to your DB.

    On the other hand, these features have their draw backs. For example, some average Jon who really doesn't know how the stuff is supposed to work can come in a slap all this stuff together to make one horribly constructed and poorly designed application. People will use the technologies, and may even claim they now how to, on a resume, for example, but really not know.

    Having these automated tools, is a nice and handy time saver, but its no excuse for actually knowing how to do things by hand.

      I use SpringIDE pluging on Eclipse 3.2 and it works great for spring beans. There are several plugins to work with Hibernate, which can generate POJOs based on the mappings file, or viceversa. I don't use Struts, but I bet there are many plugins for that too. I use JBoss and the JBossIDE is pretty good. I can also test DB connections from Eclipse. So what am I missing here?

      Absolutely nothing. Because on top of that I quickly found after a little searching a struts GUI config plugin.

      I don't really enjoy using it, it basically just gives you all these plugins pre-plugged in for you, and personally, I've always been an advocate of a little elbow grease to save some money. But, alas, I did not make the choice, and since its already been paid for I might as well take advantage.

    Hmmm, this just looks like a commercially supported version of Eclipse. I suppose if one wants professional support, it could be something useful. But I'm pretty cheap/poor, so I'll have to pass and keep using the free Eclipse.

      MyEclipse is a set of J2EE plugins for Eclipse, so if you only work with "Hello World!" apps, you'll be fine with Eclipse. I use MyEclipse 4.0.0 on a daily basis and I really like it. It is a cheap alternative ($50/yr) to IBM J2EE toolset that can cost 1000's of dollars. MyEclipse is indeed a poor man's WSAD (WebSphere Application Developer). Thumbs up for MyEclipse and the whole Eclipse initiative.

    What a poor choice for a product name. As someone who spends most of their day cleaning spyware and crap out of computers for people, I have to say that anything with "My" in the name is sure sign of malware. (notwithstanding "my computer" and "my documents" on windows, which are just badly named in the first place).

      If I really need to pay for an IDE, then I would buy IntelliJ IDEA [http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/], Eclipse is good as a free tool, it is fantastic as a free tool, but I scarcely see it giving a run for IntelliJ IDEA as far as usability, performance and features are concerned. Of course there is a plugin for everything in Eclipse, but that in my opinion just makes it that much complicated....

      Even in free tools, I see Sun's Netbeans making huge strides in usability that Eclipse is almost playing catch-up (ruby (RoR), idm integration etc)

      A recent Eclipse user... and IDEA convert.

    It is interesting that this anonymous comment was modded as Redundant although it is the only one that mentions the price tag and according to the time stamps, it was posted half an hour before the other comment saying that MyEclipse is a commercial version of Eclipse.

    I've been begging for someone to integrate vi into eclipse. For years. viPlugin sucks. There are a couple other projects, one that integrates gvim via the eclipse modular editor framework stuff, but it is also useless. Anyone know of a good way to get vi stuff working in eclipse?

    I don't use MyEclipse myself, but what I saw when I tried it is that it bundles a lot of free plugins. Sure you can download them all for free, but for 30$, it can saves you a lot of time. If you're payed 60$ an hour, after half an hour you're beginning to save money...
