Apple Releases New Touch Screen iPod
JSM writes to tell us that Apple released a new version of their popular iPod music player today that boasts, among other things, an iPhone-like touch screen and Wi-Fi capabilities. "The iPod Touch will feature the Safari Internet browser and, like the iPhone, play YouTube videos. Apple also announced a new version of its iTunes music store that will allow users to buy songs wirelessly. iTunes will also sell customizable 99-cent ringtones for the iPhone."
It sounds like the bleating of sheep...
An iPod Touch, with almost the same feature set as the iPhone, without the stupid Phone part, at a much cheaper price. Tough choice there... Feel sorry for the people who actually bought the iPhone now :/
"Anybody who tells me I can't use a program because it's not open source, go suck on rms. I'm not interested." (LT 2004)
Now that it's got WiFi. (Plus there's some sort of deal for free access to the iTunes store if you're at a Starbucks).
It can surf the web, not just the iTunes store or YouTube, which is the killer part for me. Basically, a phone-less iPhone that's thinner and with 2x the storage.
Also note the $200 price drop on the 8GB iPhone (now the same price as the 16GB iPod touch).
The only real question is - is the battery user-replaceable, or will we have to go through the class action lawsuit with every portable device Apple puts out?

this looks like a little more than "just" an ipod. I mean, which ipod comes with a (fully functional) web browser?
This thing does look pretty cool, but only up to 16GB storage? WTF. My old 40GB iPod is already full of music, I'm supposed to that and videos on a 16GB drive? Fucking Apple queers, making it thin and sleek at the expense of functionality.
I'll hold off until there's an 80GB model.
You must be kidding. The iPhone prices are with a 2 years contract!

Objectivity.
It still seems lame to me. They got all the right ingredients, but for some stupid reason won't put them together in the same product.
Touchscreen: great!
Wi-Fi with browser: great!
80/160 GB storage: great!
So why can't I have all this in one device? The 80/160GB iPods don't have touchscreens and wireless, and the Touch model has a nice big touchscreen (great for video), and wireless, and very limited storage.
Lame.
Give me a thicker iPod touch with a big-ass battery and an 80GB hard drive (or 160), and I might actually consider switching from my current iRiver H320 (now H330). Let it play Oggs and I'll do it in a heartbeat.
I could care less if I was first on the block or cool to my kids or whatever other stupid reason people cite for us early adopters irrationalities. I bought the damn phone because it was the only one on the market I tried under $800 that was worth a damn. Now that the are only $400, even better. Chrissake's people, quit projecting and speculating about why those of us who have money spend it the way we do. And I have half a brain, and I've also been an Apple customer for 20 years. This is the first time I've been stung by a price cut right after I bought a product, so no...I didn't know, or expect, the $599 price tag to be so temporary. Typical Apple would drop the price $100-$200 on the NEXT generation model, or to keep the price the same, but improve the specs (like the current iMac lineup). I'm not kicking Apple nor am I abonding them.
Wow, Apple released a PSP minus the ability to play games, minus the ability to stream video from your home, and minus the ability to install and run your own software if you wanted too (through older firmware but still). The PSP is quite bigger though but its main purpose is not really to be that small because of the games, a trade off I guess because I would not like to do any serious gaiming on a small iPod either. ANother note, Safari, well other then the name, the iPod and iPhone version of Safari is not really Safari either. The PSP can not "buy" tunes while online but I've never really felt the need to absolutely buy a song right at a specific time while away from my home either.
I'm not a hater. Just pointing out the obvious.
Apple did it again... 8GB and 16GB versions only????
I'll buy now a 160GB Archos. I waited for an open iPhone, nothing... the new iPod with big capacity, nothing, Mac OS X for PC, nothing.... will ban Apple stuff from my purchases. Thanks.
Well, unless they can manage to turn on a secret, hidden mic jack and processor with a software update this won't be a very big threat. And VOIP on an iPod is not a replacement for a cellphone for the real world, non-/. users. But I do bet that they released this one after since if they'd done it at the time of the iPhone they'd not have sold 1/10th as many iPhones. By most accounts isn't it a pretty lousy phone?

"At the expense of functionality?" It simply sacrifices one kind of functionality (storage space) for another (touch interface, OS X). Even a leftist troll should be able to understand that.
