Griefers Assault Epileptics Via Message Board
An anonymous reader tips us to a story up at Wired reporting on what may be the first computer attack to inflict physical harm on victims. Last Saturday, griefers posted hundreds of bogus messages on the support forums of the nonprofit Epilepsy Foundation that used JavaScript and strobing GIFs to trigger migraines and seizures in users. For about 3% of the 50 million epileptics worldwide, flashing lights and colors can trigger seizures. "'I don't fall over and convulse, but it hurts,' says [an IT worker in Ohio]. 'I was on the phone when it happened, and I couldn't move and couldn't speak.' ... Circumstantial evidence suggests the attack was the work of members of Anonymous, an informal collective of griefers best known for their recent war on the Church of Scientology. The first flurry of posts on the epilepsy forum referenced the site EBaumsWorld, which is much hated by Anonymous. And forum members claim they found a message board thread — since deleted — planning the attack at 7chan.org, a group stronghold."

The headline of the news article is "Hackers Assault Epilepsy Patients via Computer", yet all the perpetrators did was troll the message board with offensive links not unlike what happens here daily on Slashdot. The media never could grasp the correct usage of hackers (hackers versus crackers, hackers versus script kiddies, etc), and confusing Anonymous for hackers isn't likely to help.
'Epilepsy' is a PSYCHOLOGICAL problem. These idiots who 'have a seizure' when they see a strobe light are TAKING THE PISS. Why on Earth could a flashing light cause an otherwise perfectly healthy person to collapse in a 'fit'?
It's a PSYCHOLOGICAL reaction. But then, we can't question anything that's been declared 'the truth' by science, so the 'knowledgeable' Slashdotters, ever inquiring (not) will mod me down for questioning the Holy Grail...
I'd like to see a 'photosensitive' 'epileptic' exposing themselves repeatedly to strobe lights, and see how long they could keep up the act, and keep having 'fits', over and over and over. I think they'd probably get pretty tired of bullshitting quickly enough...

Stop blaming this on the CoS. The CoS doesn't care enough to go through all this. You all know who this was, I saw the 7chan thread when it was posted in WTFux IRC. I said the same thing then as I'll say now: It's fucking disgusting to actually attack people with disabilities for no good reason. This sounds like the anons at either 711chan.org, 420chan.org or partyvan.info (PROTIP: partyvan.info are the same anons who are behind the 'chanology' crusade -so yes, it's the same group).
And for the record, there is only one anonymous: the *chan/partyinfo anonymous. The protest fags who come from gaia, facebook and livejournal are not true anonymous.
I suspect that this raid was sparked off by Anonymous getting sick of being portrayed by namefags as do-gooding liberalfags by the assholes at enturbulation.org -we're not. We post dead cats, we drive people to suicide (and then make memes off of their memorials), we send pizza deliveries by the thousands to people who irritate us in the slightest.
This latest band of bleeding-heart assholes who are trying to portray Anonymous as 'rescuing' people from Scientology are not us -they're just another bunch of namefags riding the current wave.
