Schneier, UW Team Show Flaw In TrueCrypt Deniability
An anonymous reader writes "Bruce Schneier and colleagues from the University of Washington have figured out a way to break the deniability of TrueCrypt 5.1a's hidden files. What about the spanking-new TrueCrypt 6? Schneier says that 'The new version will definitely close some of the leakages, but it's unlikely that it closed all of them.' Meanwhile, PC World is reporting that the problems Schneier and colleagues found are bigger than just TrueCrypt. Among their discoveries: Word auto-saves the contents of encrypted files to the unencrypted portions of your disk, and this problem should apply to all non-full disk encryption software. Their research paper will appear at Usenix HotSec '08."
True Crypt has a problem eh... Windows should build in a encryption program like on Mac OS X. It would stop a lot problems and it would be Microsoft managed and it would work better because they have all the code for the OS and can provide a better service. In the Mac OS, there are no bugs that I have discovered yet on the built in encryption program. I would hope that True Crypt fixes this bug because it is a great program.

You know that M$ encryption is backdoored, don't you? Never trust closed source software for things that are important.
Friends don't help friends install M$ junk.
Not sure what nation you live in, but in the US, right down to the lowliest beat cop, they routinely beat the shit out of people to get them to talk. It happens every-single-day. They also sometimes lose a suspect in custody from beating them too bad, or using non marks techniques like hooding/plastic bag suffocation action, then the suspect becomes a miraculous suicide. Same thing the army and spook assholes do. And they have for decades. "Suspect made a furtive move, officer feared for his safety!". Shit like that is what they say to get around the dude laying there with the busted up face and stove in chest and kidneys slammed to non functionality. And that's it, all they need. Happens daily, routine, SOP. That's how they get half their "confessions".
And no, I don't want some jerk cop to chime in and say it is a "few bad apples" who do this, either, this is routine practice and has been and you know it. I'd call it torture, they deny it or if they get caught use a stock set of excuses that can fly in court. The only thing that gives them away is very occasionally they get caught on video doing it, and *even then* they'll deny it at first and their toad sucking captain or chief will claim they are innocent, right off the bat. Another thing they do that is widespread is use undercover agents provocateurs to incite violence at political rallies - "hooded anarchists". Another thing they do is work as muscle for the local big drug dealers, because they can get away with armed shakedowns and hits easier. Just think back if you can remember in school, who went on to be a cop? The most violent drunk jock bullies? That is more typical than not, because they are 1), lazy, can't or don't want to work a real job, 2) too dumb for that anyway, 3) really get off on having that authority or power. Now they like the psychos with combat experience as well, the real psychos that couldn't even maintain inside the military. Granted, a very few join the force with an altruistic bent, really want to do good, be a real public servant, really "fight crime", they either quit within a year or go as corrupt as the other guys because that is the system, go along or the system eats them up, other cops would become their biggest enemies, so it gradually gets to the point 99% are assholes, about guaranteed if they have stayed in around 2 years max. So torture is nothing, just part of the non publicized job description in real life. Look around the planet! See any place where the cops aren't crooks and jerks? The US is nothing special because humans are humans after all, they have just gotten very good at covering up most of their crimes. Want proof? Go to the local cop shop, as close as you can get easily without looking like a fool, and look at thier private cars they drive. Look like what they could afford on a cops salary? Look at their wrists, note the watches. Cop salary? Cruise buy a cop bar and see all the drunks, then notice they don't get routinely pulled over when they leave and climb into their expensive cars.
I've known dozens of cops because of some work I used to do, I can only think of two of them I would trust to bring back a borrowed lawnmower, let alone anything really important. The rest were pretty obviously complete jerks and just as criminally bent as anyone they arrested, and usually worse drunks or druggies than most.
