Time To Dump XP?

An anonymous reader writes "Gartner is saying it's time to plan your migration now (if you havent already done it). I for one know my company still has loads of users still on XP, citing training costs (time and money) rather than software license fees. Is my company alone in wanting to stay in the 1990s or is Windows 7 the way forward?"

    Uh... yes? no?

The OR version of "or" that computer scientists creates a question for which the answer provides little relevant information. The XOR version of "or" that is the popular meaning in spoken english has similar problems.

A comment that has been posted repeatedly in stories A, B, C, and D, is probably redundant in story E even if it is the first post.

The MS Office ribbon is worse than Hitler. There, I've said it. Hitler only killed 6,000,000 Jews, using an average life expectancy of (72 years / 2) gives us a mere 113529600000000 minutes of human life squandered. A mere drop in the bucket compared to the horrors of the ribbon.

    Interesting...

So do you not have Microsoft products in the back end?

If not, how do you manage file shares? In a workgroup environment, or are you using samba for domain emulation?

How do you manage centralized logins, if you do at all? (ie: logging in to the workstation authenticates against a central system)

Also, how do you manage centralized policies, if at all? (ie: screensaver policies, wireless policies, etc, all a la GPO).

Do you let all your users run updates (or not) whenever they want to against a remote repository, or is there a way for you to roll out updates in a controlled fashion?

IMO, the biggest thing missing from my perspective for Mac and Linux/*NIX is the above items.

Until then, I don't see a future for Mac or *NIX in the corporate desktop (that is larger than say... 50 systems).
