30 Creative 404 Error Pages
An anonymous reader writes "It's frustrating when you explore the web and encounter the famous message: 404 Error – Page Not Found. What could make it a little better is a customized 404 message. Here are some really good ones that should inspire other web designers."
Error establishing a database connection
I take it that the plain old "Error establishing a database connection" is not supposed to be one of these.
I support the Slashcott and will not be reading or commenting from 2/10/14 to 2/17/14. Beta is steaming pile of dog shit
WOW! That is a creative 404 error.

I don't know that I consider "Error establishing a database connection" all that creative. Mod down TFA.
Now that's sad.

Mastering the English language is fucking easy: all you have to do is to put an f* word in every fucking sentence.
Seen one like that before, yours is neither good or funny. ...And I got a 404 whilst trying to access it.
why is this on the front page?
make a creative 500 page.
I custom designed my 404 page as well. Here Inspiring no? I call the design "Enlightenment Through Simplicity"
I made an app! Shoutium
GitHubs 404 is great. cartoon rendition of a scene from a new hope with the title 'this is not the page you are looking for'
Why do I get the sneaking sense that taking web-design guidance from a site at "flashuser.net" that managed to get its DB hosed while attempting to serve up a slab of largely static content is probably not the best of ideas?
'nuff said.
I do not have a sig. You are hallucinating.
There's only one error message listed, and it's not very original!
That was funny.
Plinko labs. They've been doing this for years.

I was helping our HR to sort few applications to an open position in our company once.
Otherwise promising CV had cover letter containing a link to his work examples online.
Too bad, the link was truncated by our HR software and split into two rows, of course the software created link to the first half of the url only.
The applicant was quickly ruled out as a candidate since the 404 page from the incomplete link had goatse on it.
I did check the actual link by fixing it manually but our HR had already shredded the files by then.
There are no atheists when recovering from tape backup.
Since the article is down, I figured I'd share my own custom 404 page:

Well, back to rejecting software patent applications.
An idea for a 404 page was to have a scene from "The Naked Gun", either the bit where Drebin is standing in front of the exploding fireworks factory, saying "Move along, nothing to see here", or the bit earlier on where him and the chief go to the scene of Norberg's shooting, and a cop with a megaphone is saying the same thing to two people at the quayside. Well, if I don't do it, it might give someone an idea to do so... ;)

- Holy crap, I've got MOD points! Who thought that was a good idea.
Is it really that hard to test and insure that your custom 404 error page is actually throwing a 404 error message, and it isn't just a soft 404 that actually throws a 200 OK message? There are far too many sites with custom 404 pages that don't check this, and it makes script writing needlessly difficult.
"Error establishing a database connection" isn't that unusual. Many /. links return that error.

Years ago 404 errors were not that uncommon when people were looking for something based on a poorly written link or whatever else. At that time, it was cute to have a custom 404 error for the misdirected.
However, by my experience with my home web server at least, >>99% of 404 errors are the result of script kiddies trying to find vulnerabilities in my web site (usually looking for phpmyadmin or similar). They won't read the 404 error anyways, so whether it is cute, vulgar, or plain, it doesn't matter because their automatic system that is trolling for vulnerabilities will discard the error message anyways.

Different website, and I can't check to see as the posted site's down, but I imagine much the same content...

Oh noes... mirrordot is no more!!! I saw the Error 500 and immediately thought of mirrordot.org, but was not routed to the infamous site. What a shame... the solution to the slashdot effect is no more.

Fark.com uses it's favorite squirrel for it's 404 error page.
My joke-band's joke-website takes a shot at the total uselessness of the "www" subdomain by throwing an error if you DON'T use WWW:

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is kinky.
I'd originally created this to use as a 404 page on my website, but I never actually implemented it as such.
The people responsible for that database error have been sacked...
Sorry, but gray text on gray background is making my eyes bleed.
And yet another misleading title and summary. There aren't 30 error pages, there is only one, and it is not even a 404 error page (or that creative).

That is all....
Let's see some other custom pages for HTTP errors. I think designers could really have some fun with 410 (Gone), 401 (Unauthorized), 403 (Forbidden), and 418 (I'm a teapot).
I tried to read TFA, but when I clicked on the link, all I got was a 404 page. In fact, I got 30 of them!
They're missing my favorite 404 page. Of course, it's for my own site, but it's still my favorite.
Good, inexpensive web hosting
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I websurfed, weak and weary, ...Over many a strange and spurious website of 'hot chicks galore', ...While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, ...And my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour. ..."'Tis not possible," I muttered, "give me back my cheap hardcore!" -

The Oglaf 404 page is second only to the secret page (which is fukken awesome!)
http://sjgames.com/404.html . Reload a few times; the messages change.
Interesting how common it is for these pages to invite users to report the error. Is it that the site administrators don't know how to read their access logs, or something else?
I was always partial to our rockband.com error page:
www.rockband.com/40404
still no sig
Many years ago I did this page and I almost never see it but every once in a while I do mistype a URL and see it again.
This is great. I think other have ripped it off since it was made, but I'm fairly sure this is the original location for that message.
The preceding post was not a Slashvertisement.
