Syrian Hackers Deface Anonymous' Social Network

CWmike writes "After the hacking gang Anonymous took credit for defacing Syria's Ministry of Defense website, a Syrian group retaliated on Monday by posting gruesome photos on Anonymous' embryonic social network. The defacement of AnonPlus — the site Anonymous set up last month when it was booted off Google+ — did not include the name of the group responsible. The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, however, credited the AnonPlus defacement to the 'Syrian Electronic Army' in a message posted to Twitter. 'In response to your hacking to the website of the Syrian Ministry of Defence, the Syrian people have decided to purify the internet of [y]our pathetic website,' the defacement read."

They are fortunate enough to have outlets through hunting and the military or otherwise large prisons to contain the culture of hostility. Sure, there are more dangerous places, but there's no place I'd rather not see an anarchy than countries with more guns than people.

      I can think of some things even then. E.g. Showing people their own entrails would likely elicit very strong reaction, even among veteran anons. And these "hackers" likely being Syrian secret police, I wouldn't completely discount such a possibility.

      More likely they are paid off organised crime. The Syrian secret police are more likely to be involved in direct physical brutality, for personal pleasure and profit, the intellectual needs of that kind of pursuits are not very high and do not include computer skills.

      In those states organised crime and secret police often include the same people at the higher levels and are tied back to the monarchical government. That monarchical government of course pretends to be what ever style of governments it wants to but basically boils down to a criminal organisation, that seeks to gain power and wealth via extortion, murder, protection rackets, looting the national treasury via corrupt dealings with equally corrupt foreign banks.

      They of course keep in power and maintain the delusion of monarchy being a beneficial political system by torturing to death anyone who protests to loudly or effectively. All royalty, no matter their public relations claims, all had their basis of existence in exactly what is occurring in Syria now. Murderous psychopaths willing to kill off what ever portion of the population they need to, to feed their personal ego and lusts.

      Please don't confuse "Westerners" with "citizens of the United States". Some "Western" countries don't have all that many guns, and significantly lower proportions of the population in prison (which tends to be significantly more civilised) than the US. Of course, one non-US western country is currently suffering from small-scale rioting and looting, so maybe today isn't a good time to argue this point.

      Which was what I was referring to in the final sentence... Although, interestingly, with about 600 arrests so far, and apparently all jail cells in London full, Greater London has about the same incarceration rate as the entire US.

      As a rule, by the time you're looking at your own entrails it's a bit late for much reaction. I think showing the entrails of other people that you love is what would be truly shocking, and pretty much the Syrian secret police's modus operandi.

      They'd have to pretty freaking stupid to pull that off. Either that or far more talented than I think they are. Doing stuff like that to citizens of other countries, even when they aren't much liked by their own country, is a good way to start some serious problems internationally.

      Anon would have to do a lot more than defacement to make their deaths worth getting bombed.

      I'm not, some of the remarks apply to most, some apply to few. The West is a broad term and generalizations about it will always have exceptions. That being said, the U.S. *is* leader of team West, and those remarks are benchmarked to be at least true for them.

    Anonplus was defaced by some group claiming to be from syria a week or so ago.

    The site got a new title: "Hacket by The Pro & SaQeR SyRia" and carried a huge picture of syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

      Well, nobody really knows what happens to most of the victims of the Syrian secret police, the Idarat al-Mukhabarat al-Amma, or Idarat al-Amn al-Siyasi. They just "disappear" people. Many thousands by all reports over the years. Chances are they will piss on you as they beat the crap out of you, pull your teeth and fingernails out with rusty pliers and THEN piss on your grave, weather or not you are alive when they bury you.

      But as I said, that's not really clear because the mass graves their victims have been buried in haven't been discovered yet.

      I don't think I'd rely on distance being a factor in their ability to reach out and "touch" somebody either. Loyalty is a very complex issue completely independent of citizenship status.

      But, you anonymous guys are the captain of your own ship.

      Sure those thugs have done a lot of damage i Syria, but to say that they are a threat to anyone outside Syria is megalomania of the insane kind.

      I hereby encourage Anonymous to go after Syria again and pay special attention to whatever members of the secret police they can find. Send Goatse to all members of their family and - in their names - to the family of Bashar al-Assad, the head bozo himself included. Should be a nice bloodbath if the Syrians are as stupid as they appear.

      Ah, glad you asked. As I mentioned in my above post loyalty is a complex issue. The Syrians are a tribal people. Worse than gangs, much worse. One word from a tribal leader loyal to the Assad regime, and yes they would "get him". Not necessarily the secret police, but likely a loyal tribe member who has immigrated to the west. If you think it is an unlikely scenario you might want to consider this:

      This sort of thing has been going on for centuries. The United State's first episode dealing with Islamic tribal leaders dates back to the first Barbary War of 1801. A later example in the movie "The Wind and the Lion" was based on an actual incident, except the role of Candice Bergen, Mrs. Pendicaris, was actually a man.

      AnonPlus is a social networking site, AnonTalk was a forum. I assume you understand the difference. AnonPlus started life on (or around) 16th July 2011. Whatever thing AnonPlus tried to copy obviously existed prior to AnonPlus, but was also NOT AnonPlus. Given AnonPlus's raison d'être, AnonPlus is much more a clone of Facebook than anything else. And even if it was a spin-off from AnonTalk, a spin-off does not automagically become equal it's ancestor. AnonPlus != AnonTalk.

    Thank you for the gesture however we would like to raise a couple of issues: we loved those picutes and thought they made for great lulz but we only saw them when they were uploaded on /b/ because you never actually defaced anything that had anything to do with us. AnonPlus does not belong to Anonymous and never has been.
