Tennessee "Teaching the Controversy" Bill Becomes Law
MrKevvy writes "The Tennessee 'Teaching the Controversy' bill was passed into law today. 'A law to allow public school teachers to challenge the scientific consensus on issues like climate change and evolution will soon take effect in Tennessee. State governor Bill Haslam allowed the bill — passed by the state House and Senate — to become law without signing it, saying he did not believe the legislation "changes the scientific standards that are taught in our schools."'"
The governor adds: "However, I also don’t believe that it accomplishes anything that isn’t already acceptable in our schools."
Today we'll be discussing the controversy over whether or not Jesus was gay, kids.

The ones in favor of teaching evolution and climate change as established fact are merely statists who want to increase government power over the church and the individual.
Look at the solutions to the problems brought up by evolution: remove church teaching and authority in favor of government authority.
Look at the solutions to the problems brought up by climate change: remove individual property rights in favor of government authority.
I'm seeing a pattern here.
Ergo, until that is done repeatedly under laboratory conditions, atheists, your theory of the origin of life remains exactly that. A THEORY.
These stories always amuse me.
The folks that are religious about the "truth" of the big bang, evolution, climate change or any other theory try to defend presenting the THEORY as scientific fact in the name of good science. Whether you believe in it or not, it is just plain silly to present it as fact. Theory and fact are two very different things.
It is dishonest to present these theories as fact, no matter how convinced you are of their truthfulness, they remain theories. There are plenty of goons on both sides of the argument, but you have to admit that there are just as many people who are closed minded and simply unwilling to accept reality who are in favor of these theories as are against them.

I can't wait for the first lawsuit involving a teacher fired for teaching kids about gay sex in his sex-ed class, or the first atheist teacher who catches even a sideways glance for teaching about evolution openly in any way he/she wants to.

The law PROTECTS people ALLOWING THEM TO SAY THAT VERY THING.
It gives teachers the protection to disagree with scientists OR religions without you, their bosses, or anyone else telling them its wrong.

Just because it also protects them when they want to teach creationism doesn't mean it'll be warped around into gay bashing.
Science is wrong, A LOT, yet people such as yourself seem to have this religious ferver for it that makes you blind to the fact that good science does not reject alternative theories. You want to reject alternatives you don't believe in. The religious nut jobs do as well. Personally, the world would be a much better place without either one of you being around.
The world isn't black and white, science isn't actually the law of the universe contrary to popular belief, its just our way of trying to explain those laws and evolution could be JUST as wrong as creationism, we may find out in the future. You don't really know.
This law simply says you don't get to decide what path the teacher takes to teach in the classroom, and thats a law I stand by, otherwise we'd have idiots like you teaching us the religion of science.
You're ignorance in this matter is exactly why I don't want people like you having any say in what teachers tell my children, you don't even know what the law is about, you have it pretty much completely ass backwards, and yet you've been rated +5 by a bunch of other slashdot religious nutjobs who are also too lazy and ignorant to know what the law is actually about.

Yet, I can give you a well known time when newton's laws don't apply. In fact I can give you a time when science has agreed that 'the laws of our universe don't apply', yet your sitting here trying to tell me these things aren't debatable. If accepted scientific knowledge is correct, the universe can not exist in the state it currently exists in.

You are right. Evolution shouldn't be looked at on it's strengths and weaknesses. Blind faith is the only way to go for that one.
