Linux Is a Lemon On the Retina MacBook Pro
An anonymous reader writes "It turns out that Linux doesn't work too well on the Apple Retina MacBook Pro. Among the problems are needing special boot parameters to simply boot the Linux kernel, graphics drivers not working, no hybrid graphics support, WiFi requiring special firmware, Thunderbolt troubles, GNOME/Unity/KDE not being optimized for retina displays, and other snafus, including 20% greater power consumption with Linux over OS X. According to Michael Larabel, it will likely not be until early next year when most of the problems are ironed out for a clean 'out of the box' Linux experience on the Retina MacBook Pro."
Really? I was just assuming it was more that they wanted to convert one of the fixed-track old-timey cars at the amusement park into something that can drive in the real world, but hey.
I do it with a macbook air.
The hardware is nice, but OSX is terrible.
What is wrong with OSX? The vast majority of software package available on linux are also available on OSX, it is POSIX compliant and certified as a commercial UNIX, ships with a rich set of frameworks and has many free and commercial apps not available on linux.
Maybe you could explain to me why linux is a better desktop OS than OS X given than the latter has more software availability than the former.

Apple makes good hardware, and the prices are surprisingly competitive these days. Linux is the de-facto standard for serious software development if you want to do anything beyond making a few crApps and hobbyist tinkering. Makes perfect sense to me.
I don't know what planet you are on but on earth, Windows is the de-facto standard for serious software development and OS X is the de-facto standard for content creation. If you want to do anything beyond making a few crap apps like Amarok or crappy abstract wallpapers with Gimp, then you would want to use either OS X or windows. OS X offers the cocoa frameworks for creating amazing desktop apps but those are only useful if you are making a mac specific application or if your common code is separated from the platform specific code.

It hasn't been "rolled into the cost of the hardware." Proof please. The software is a giveaway to help sell the hardware, the area they actually make money.
The fucking operating system is non-serialized. I can give it to a hundred people and Apple would never know because frankly, they don't give a shit. Quit trying to rationalize a defenseless and baseless lie. The OS is free with the hardware and 20$ FOR A FULL VERSION OF THE OS when you wish to upgrade. Get the fuck over it.
Linux TM number 17. in the future if you want to spread Linux BS please choose the appropriate TM, the first 30 usually cover every bit of BS ever posted here, thanks. Oh and BTW I have a single DVD that will install pretty much ANY Windows driver for ANY device and do so with a single click, where is yours? Oh right there isn't even a single repo for drivers yet, sorry bout that. And where is the find drivers and rollback drivers buttons? you know, the things Windows has had for over a decade? oh yeah, those don't exist either, bummer.
You can waste mod points but it won't make black into white, or straw into gold. Linux is great for embedded, kicks ass on web servers, but as long as Linus Torvalds has a pulse Linux drivers are gonna be dooky.
ACs don't waste your time replying, your posts are never seen by me.
The main thing is that fonts are a lot sharper, but only in comparison to non-Retina Macs. Windows just uses fonts optimized for the screen so they look almost as sharp as just as readable, if not more so.
You're trying to claim that the Retina MBP isn't a lot sharper than a Windows Laptop. Bullshit.
