World's First 3D Printing Photo Booth
Zothecula writes "Ever wanted a life-like miniature of yourself or loved ones? Now's your chance, thanks to Omote 3D, which will soon be opening what's described as the world's first 3D printing photo booth in Harajuku, Japan. There, visitors will have their bodies scanned into a computer, a process which takes about 15 minutes. Then the company prints your statuette on their 3D color printer in one of three sizes."
Oliver's law of assumed responsibility: If you're seen fixing it, you will be blamed for breaking it.
to a whole nother level...
The stocks of Voodoo Inc. are up 25%.
How do you recognize a website which is more interested in page impressions than content? TFA alternates spelling of the company name between Omote and Otome. At least they consistently write it wrong in all their gallery pages.
Those people allready have it: http://3d-u.es/ ....
In one of 5 sizes
It's in Madrid, so sorry for Omote's people, I guess they'll have to be happy to be the first in Asia or something like this....
That illustrate the issue with the internet and europe...
Internet helps you check claims, ... ....
And we are lousy in Marketing
Oh well.....
I shall make a monument!
“He’s not deformed, he’s just drunk!”
According to a comment at the end of the article, a place in Madrid has been doing this for two years now.

I've fallen off your lawn, and I can't get up.
I'm a fat guy, it'll take at least 25 minutes.
Then we will have disposable 3d camera that can make 3d models in less than an hour for pennies a picture.
If something is so important that you feel the need to post it on the internet... It probably isn't that important.
FUCK YES!!!!!

MMO Quests are like orgasms:
You may solo them, I prefer them in a group.
I'd like a 3d model of my girlfriend, but with cat ears and tail?

I don't get why it would take 15 minutes?
If it's laser based (lidar), you should be able to have a single lidar rotate around your body in less than a minute.
If it's IR based (think Kinect) you should be able to image in less than a minute.
The required CPU power and data storage are non issues on any modern computer.
My God can beat up your God. Just kidding...don't take offense. I know there's no God.
When I think of a photo booth, I imagine a sequence of photos of the subjects in different poses printed in a vertical filmstrip-like layout. Would the 3D statuette equivalent of this be a totem pole of poses?
Now they don't have to confine themselves to 2-D naked women.

If 15 minutes for a scan seems too impractical, Homeland Security has already announced a deal with the TSA that will allow you to order a nice anatomically correct figure of yourself the next time that you go through an airport.
I'm an American. I love this country and the freedoms that we used to have.
It's a shame it doesn't work on pictures - I want my Don Burleson Bobblehead!
3D printing will fade back into obscurity in two years, leaving only the niche hackers and hobbyists to tinker away at plastic trinkets.
Thirty years ago in Tokyo they had beer vending machines everywhere and on the streets, 100 yen and you had a 375ml (or thereabouts) can of beer. More and you could even get 3 litre cans of beer. There seemed to be no restriction on who could use them. Nowadays I hear they have vending machines selling schoolgirl's underwear. I certainly didn't see any of those.
Weird vending machines and weirder toilets aside, Japan is well worth visiting and great fun, but remember that in the little towns no-one speaks English.
I said - don't look Ethel!..., but it was too late..., she'd already looked.
I guess one could transmit the data over satellite link and assemble the copy somewhere else.
Once confirmation comes back that the copy worked flawlessly the scanning laser automatically incinerates the original.
My entire D&D group just orgasmed.
The actual site (Japanese) is here: http://www.omote3d.com/
This is very different from what I expected from the article, since some years ago I worked with some guys who left Bandai and made all kinds of kiosks - print club stickers, idol contests, internet equipped refrigerators, convenience store ticket kiosks running linux (and lisp originally), etc.
But this one is in Gyre, a fashion building (includes Chanel, Bulgari Cafe and the MOMA shop) in the center of Omotesando here: http://gyre-omotesando.com/ This building has a nice little exhibition space that has been used in the past by artists some I've met, often in collaboration like with Kenwood IIRC, the space is called Eye of Gyre (you can google it or see here: http://whereintokyo.com/venues/25326.html
It website says Omoto 3D Photo Museum is the first exhibition by Creative Lab PARTY, a two-month limited time pop-up store in which you can create your own figure. It is the first attempt in the world to use a 3D scanner and 3D printer to leave a memento of families in their teens.
Omote 3D Shashin Kan is open Nov. 24 to Jan 14.
Looking briefly at the companies involved, it looks like maybe ijet does the service and datadesign provides the hardware it seems, and then there are some commercial design and advertising companies, and a media art team called rhizomatiks (which has a neat javascript page) are involved.
