Linus Torvalds Delays Linux 3.7, Releases 3.7-rc8 Kernel Instead

hypnosec writes "The Linux 3.7 kernel has been delayed by one week as Linus Torvalds has released the Linux 3.7-rc8 instead. Because of some hiccups following the 'resurrection of a kswapd issue,' Torvalds wasn't comfortable releasing version 3.7 this week and instead went ahead with another release candidate. Torvalds revealed in his release announcement that because of this delay, the merge window for Linux 3.8 will close just around Christmas time."

  You do realise that all Google does for Chrome is update Chrome slightly and then increment the major version number instead of incrementing the minor version number?
  They do this so that when simple computer users go "Oh, which browser should I choose? Chrome or Internet Explorer/Safari", they'll see that Chrome is version 20 or something while IE/Safari is 10, and then automatically assume Chrome is better because of said version number.

  Chrome has lots of point releases, actually. You're right that they update the major version number quickly, though. I miss the days when a major version number change meant new features, not bug fixes or speedups.

  I'm old school in that regard too:
  Major number means a large jump in interface, coding, modules, and the build tree in general. An example would be a word processor getting a new format, a major new feature like spell checking, or a layout change that changes functionality completely.
  Minor numbers meant some features were added, but not enough to increment a major number. Continuing the word processor example, adding multi-dictionary support to the spell checker, adding PDF/A as an export format, or significant but not earth-shattering new items.
  Then you had your revision number. This was almost always for bugs or UI items. As with the word processor, it would be a process where a display glitch when scrolling gets fixed, or that during the save process, the old document gets renamed, the file gets saved, then the old document gets set aside or deleted, to ensure that there is always a working copy of the data.
  On the IT side of the fence, one shys away from x.0.0 or even x.x.0 versions, and waits until the x.0.1 release happens. With version inflation like in Web browsers, this goes out the window, so it is harder to find a "stable" version to include in a corporate image.

  What a load of garbage. US soldiers were also issued meth. Nevermind that meth is prescribed for attention disorder among other uses. Personally, I self medicate with meth and it doesn't cause any of the problems you had with it. But I don't go overboard, either.   Personally I don't know on what version of Chrome I have at all and don't miss it a bit, no website is at least complaining that I must run IE or upgrade to a newer version. I'm sure there's support for new features but it looks like most websites are now content with just waiting for them to become available rather than actively pushing them. I'm very glad "best viewed with" seem to have died a silent death.

  Sure you could but then you either need a prescription or a good street connection. Schedule 2 drugs aren't as easy as you might think to get a doctor to just glibly sign off on. If you go the street route, to get the same effect you get with a gram of meth from something like Adderal or Vivance will cost you several times the cash. Also, meth can be smoked, snorted, IV'd, shoved up your ass, or swallowed so it's a lot more flexible than the pharmaceuticals. It all adds up to meth if you're serious about amphetamine use.

  You didn't understand what you read. The parenthetical list was examples of what he does consider to be major issues, not what he will not accept.   No. It doesn't work just as well. If one is listing what counts as irrelevant, the parenthetical goes immediately after the phrase "small irrelevant things". Since it comes immediately after the phrase "major issues" it is clearly a list of major issues. It doesn't matter if it is English or C.   Linux wasn't written for GNU, with GNU, by GNU, and has even explicitly rejected the latest GNU license. They aren't even close to being "officially" part of GNU. As for the greater Linux operating system, it might as well be called MIT/BSD/GNU/Linux if you want to start assigning credit.   I think it's not accurate because Linux becomes overloaded from being a kernel to a complete system and this becomes an issue when dealing with specific problems. RMS asks for the GNU/Linux name because GNU together with Linux forms the most significant part of the system of a GNU/Linux system. The software from MIT and BSD form a lesser part of the system and so, demand a lesser naming right. The Android system is an example of an OS that isn't GNU/Linux system, it would be accurate to call it the Linux/Android system.

  The problem is that then you would be using the GNU icon with a post about a kernel no one except perhaps Richard Stallman has ever hurd about. Tux is in hiding for now because as soon as he shows his head the shills jump all over the thread! When he does return from hiding then perhaps there will be more posts about how to easily dual boot any linux distro with a new computer. Till then the Penguins both male and female are all in the Antarctic regions for breeding season. Except for the ones captive in zoos or on older computers!

  Yeah, this mistake has been made in the past as well. They should have the penguin, rather than the gnu, and drop the gnu reference, since stories like this are about the kernel, not the GNU userland

TFA is about a kernel that apparently has features that are so unstable after a 7th Release Candidate that it needs an 8th RC before it is ready for production. Who ever heard of so much churn in a kernel happening AFTER beta and in RC? Even Microsoft doesn't do that. Sounds like the development / specification process has broken down a bit and needs to be tightened back up again.

God you're stupid. The "churn" is the result of bug fixes not the addition of new features. It's the result of reacting to test data rather than ignoring it because the board of assholes wants the product to ship at a specific date. It's far better that churn happens before release than after release. A proper fix is more likely to happen before release. After release it turns into an all out hack in order to maintain compatibility with applications depending on the broken behavior.
This is not the result of anything being "broken" in the development. This is the result of things going right. Vista is the result of shipping because of an inflexible schedule. If they would have done the Right Thing, they would have let it "churn" a bit more before releasing it.
