Saints Row IV Announced

From the press release: 'In the next open-world installment of Saints Row, Deep Silver Volition continues the story of the Third Street Saints by elevating their status to the highest level – the leaders of the free world. In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. Saints Row IV lets players delve into an arsenal of alien weaponry and technology that will turn each Saint into an ultimate entity of destruction. The player utilizes out-of-this-world superpowers to fight all the way to the top. With intensified action and enhanced customization, the protagonists can use their newfound superpowers and leap over buildings, outrun the fastest sports cars, or send enemies flying with telekinesis in the most insane installment of Saints Row yet.'"

    Trailblazing, Mayhem, and every other part of the game that gamers considered to be fun in the previous installments have been removed and will be sold separately as add-ons at a later date.

    At least if they continue the trend of every Saint's Row so far.

    If they continue beyond that, saints row V will require you to buy each bullet and telekinetic power individually as DLC.

      While I'm not happy they are going further away from SR2, I am happy they are making another game. I hope they bring back layered clothes again. That was an aspect that greatly helped SR2, also more interior areas.

      Honestly, this is not news that should be on this site. I did a double take when I saw it.

    2 and Third were great. Insurance Fraud is probably the best minigame activity in the series. And nothing beats the gang war against a bunch of furries in Third.

    There were times I had to pause the game until my eyes cleared I was laughing so hard.

      Loved each iteration of this game in the series. Even the buggy turd that the first game was, it was still a ton of fun, and each successive game was even better than the last. Odd though it may seem, that insane description in the summary is just the natural progression of this franchise.

      The game was already dancing around the edges of superpower fantasy blasting around the skies in VTOL jets, hoverbikes, skydiving, charging through a hail of gunfire, throwing people across the street. Now they're just going for it all out.

      I like games that are innovative and push the boundaries of the medium with it's art or technological brilliance. SR3 wasn't one of them. But it was a polished game that was a TON of fun to play. There's room for me to enjoy both games that are mindless fun and games which are more introspective/groundbreaking.

      I would buy it if you can beat up hookers using smalle purple dildos than in SR3, if you can beat them up using even larger dildos than in SR3 it will skip SR4.

      SR1 is the fun successor of GTA:SA.

    Well, I've heard 3 was quite good as a means of delivering absurdity. I never played it because my personal predilection is for more intellectual games that reward planning and forethought than the more action oriented games.

    I agree with you, though that corporate games that are big sequels to big games tend to have less cleverness as numbers go up, and don't really necessarily deserve articles. On the other hand, if you try to pick niche things to have articles on, you run into the problem of a lack of notability, and lacking particular interest from the readers here.

    ..haters gonna hate. "You do crime in 3rd person in a city.. OMG GTA RIPOFF". The only games that have been ripping off GTA... are GTA sequels. SR2 and SR3 are both better than any GTA game ever made, except the first, which of course I still own for PC. Sadly I no longer have a 3dfx/glide card to enjoy it with.

    I picked up Saints Row 3 on a whim when it was something like $10 for the game and all its DLC on Steam. Before that I'd known little of the series and the advertising/reviews hadn't really been compelling enough for me to try it out.

    As if ripped from the brain of an acid-tripping Mark Millar, SR3's balls to the wall ridiculousness somehow works, and co-op support takes it to a whole other level. I'm hooked. Give me more.

      SR3 is actually not that good compared to SR2 :-)

      In SR2 you could pimp out everything you owned, my personal favorite car is the APC, pimped with candy glossed purple military decals. Also, SR3 is frankly too easy, you get all the goodies served; in SR2 you had to earn your way to the penthouse, just felt that much more satisfying.

      That being said, SR3 was extremely entertaining and I'll be first in line for the SR4 release.

      tl;dr, go pick up SR2.

      While I generally agree that SR3 felt more limited than SR2, the problem with SR2 is that the PC port is buggy as hell and a huge performance hog, which crashes regularly on many machines. It doesn't even run properly if your CPU's clock speed isn't the same as the console it was developed for.

      The menus were the absolute worst part of it, its like they just randomly mapped shit to keys and couldn't reuse keys or something. Using the weirdass mapping would be useful if you could still move and use the menu at the same time, but opening the menu pauses the coop game.

      The statement "SR3 has fewer features than SR2 in almost every way" is a proven fact.

    It's not as much a clone as it is similar at this point. GTA has become more realistic, and SR is just over the top craziness.

    I know how to make it "news for nerds" and simultaneously make it something a little different than just ANOTHER game sequel, with copy/paste gameplay.

    Make it GTA, but in the future! Yes yes, I remember that's what GTA2 was, but a modern GTA-type game that takes place in a sci-fi, future city would be *awesome*. Flying cars, robot cops, side missions on a moon base (which would take mere seconds to reach, a-la Futurama), etc. etc.

    Hell--this lead to an even better idea: A Futurama GTA game where you play as Bender!

      Well, they were originally going to release "Enter the Dominatrix" as DLC - but then they changed their mind and said they were going to release it as a standalone game; it seems likely that it'll be a lightly modified SR3 engine under the hood.

    I wish GTA would stop being so serious, but I suppose that's why SR exists. Now adding more crazy to the mix I'm all for it. I just feel like this looks way too much like 3 and will feel like a simple DLC rather than a full blown new game. Adding super powers doesn't really change the game enough to slap a 4 on it, it could work as a regular DLC.

    It's unfortunate that some people like 2 over 3 simply because the story was better. Gameplay in 3 is so much superior on every level that I don't care about the story being ruined, story is the least of my concerns when picking a video GAME.

      Superior gameplay what? Oh yeah, you mean how they made the fire truck diversion so much more awesome, wait no, the brawls got cooler, err hm... was it the races? Oh, yeah, it must be where you can go back and replay that awesome mission where... well no, you can't do that anymore either.

      They took out all the gameplay from SR2. They put back a few new things (the reality climax is kind of cool) then put the rest of things into DLC. Not only that, there isn't even a reason to bother doing half the stuff like nailing a basejumping target, since you just buy all the upgrades when your respect gets high enough.

    A better expression would be "retarded".
    All Saints Row games were more or less retarded and full of idiotic bugs. The only thing that I partly appreciated was character customization, and that took me close to 10 minutes of fun, then it became "meh". Sleeping Dogs, on the other hand, was awesome.

    The minute I heard "So you're robbing a bank as yourselves? Ultra-Postmodernism. I love it." I was smiling. Sure, there was stuff that was immature and usually I hate that, but there were so many moments where I was just having pure fun that I don't even care. So many moments of "wait, did that really just happen?" Been thinking of picking up Sleeping Dogs though. I like serious games too.

      Who fricken cares? I write Linux device drivers, live with it all day. No fricken way would I recommend any Linux distro to anyone I'd end up supporting. When Linux just fricken works out of the box I'll change my mind, but I'm not holding my breath.

      Face it. I'm a Linux expert, started with Yggdrasil in '94, and not only do I still have a Windows gaming box but I'm not looking to get rid of said Windows box. Linux has been The Next Big Desktop for 20 years now, and it will be 20 years from now.

    What an interesting view. I find the mindless action games that don't require planning and forethought are more like a job, because when I'm doing a job I sometimes have tasks where I don't engage my mind as much as I'd like, and when I'm not doing a job I get to avoid those things.

    It's not that my job doesn't have planning and forethought -- it does, a lot, that's why I went for that job -- it's that I can almost never get enough of that. So I guess what we have in common is that we're avoiding the things we don't like from a job, but completely opposite on what it is that is like a job that we're avoiding.

    I try not to judge people holding the GP's position. I have never in my life understood people who wish to "turn their brain off" to enjoy something. It's an utterly baffling premise to me. But it's a common position, and I hold no need to judge people over something so trivial.

    However, being judged in turn seems to be normal(probably confirmation bias on my part). Daring to enjoy something mentally intricate seems to really grate on some people. I don't know why.
