Remote Island Adopts Dothraki Language

An anonymous reader writes "The tiny island of Tristan da Cunha is officially the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world with few connections to the outside and access only by sea when the notoriously stormy south Atlantic co-operates which is not often. Entertainment options are limited and LARPing in Game of Thrones style has become massively popular, so much so that the islanders have declared Dothraki to be an official language, alongside English."

I was pretty let down by Slashdot last year—I mean, no April Fools jokes at all? It couldn't get any worse.

But this year I was impressed, because they proved it could.

As someone who lived on Staten Island most of his life, I can say for certain the native language there is not Dothraki, nor is that commonly spoken there as to know about it you'd have to be able to read. The usual dialect spoken there sounds a lot like "HAYHAYVINNIEMYMAN! Howyadoon, longtimenosee, youan fuckin Joey dont fuckin come out no more!", which is basically the formal way of saying "Hello, I'm about to punch you on the back."

This island, and the "nearby" St Helena, are interesting places.

One of my colleagues is from St Helena, population about 4000. She grew up on the island, and remoteness and cost of travel is so high that the first time she ever left it was age 18, to attend university in the UK. Both island groups are UK overseas territories, and receive British TV, news etc, but I'm not sure that's much preparation for actually living in a country where we call a settlement of 4000 people a "village".

There remoteness also gives them unique flora and fauna
