Canonical Seeks $32 Million To Make Ubuntu Smartphone

nk497 writes "Canonical has kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to raise $32 million in 30 days to make its own smartphone, called Ubuntu Edge, that can also hook up to a monitor and be used as a PC. If it meets its funding target on Indiegogo, the Ubuntu Edge is scheduled to arrive in May 2014. To get one, backers must contribute $600 (£394) on the first day or $810 (£532) thereafter. Canonical will only make 40,000 of the devices."

MONAYYYY and mainly no risk sales.. a bit high on the target though.

and buying shit you don't know what you're buying. really shuttleworth? REALLY? INDIE FUCKING GOGO? I know you read this. why not just man up and do them? you running out of money? you know you were supposed to do this thing a year ago so..

also, what's better than in a padfone.

third also(yeah, you'll hate incoherent posts) 832 bucks what the fuck man.... any phone with hdmi out and otg usb "can" be used as a desktop.. for that fucking money you should ship it with a desktop.. but you're supposedly been running a company for years and that's no way to go indiegogo, you're perversing crowdsourcing. because what you're really doing is selling a product, but trying to dodge consumer protection laws in the process.

this is really potentially ubuntu bankrupting stuff so I guess ubuntu is already in the state of being on the verge of bankrupcy..

Seriously? Now, private, for-profit companies are just asking people for cash? What kind of balls does it take to do that? And, somewhat related, what kind of idiot would give them money?

Have you ever tried to have sex with a woman? Woman are stupid, panicky animals and most men can't for the life of them get their dick in it. Then there's the one or two guys that fuck 6 new girls a week and could get your orthodox muslim wife bent over a couch in 90 seconds flat just by talking sweet.

Every dude who's not boning the shit out of your girlfriend while you're at work and almost every single woman is probably the kind of idiot that would give a for-profit corporation donations.

"For a phone to run a full desktop OS, it must have the raw power of a PC. We’ll choose the fastest available multi-core processor, at least 4GB of RAM and a massive 128GB of storage."

Instead of coding Gnome with efficiency in mind, or, any common sense. Just put the fastest parts you can in a phone to hide its terrible code and performance?

Yeah, honestly, what a joke this is.
    Whats wrong with android? Nothing!
Gnome+Ubuntu mobile will just be a slower/buggier/bloater version of android, which is already near-perfect.

$32 million to make this happen, best of luck. If it succeeds, it will just confirm the world is mostly full of idiots.

The great mistake of society is a desire to eliminate the poor.

Destruction is not profit. When we destroy things, we lose the wealth they represent.

When I am finished with my clothes, I get new clothes. The old clothes go through the Singer sewing machine and the steam press, and then with their tasteful patchwork and a fresh press-and-starch they go to Good Will or Planet Aid or something (I really need to audit these people for efficiency). Some poor negro kid in my city (it's full of poverty-stricken blacks, and Good Will donations go exactly to the store you put them in) now gets a $70 pair of pants for $5. Now he has nice pants, a few repairs, but they're nice. He doesn't have to buy pants, and that wealth stays in society. Also he's poor, so he can't afford that shit anyway; his mom's too busy trying to figure out how to afford food. Well now she can.

Now imagine that these poor kids were all on my level or better. Enough money to just flip over their clothes, their kitchen supplies (dinged, scratched pots and pans; incomplete dinnerware sets; etc.). Nobody has mis-matched plates and cups. Nobody has old clothes. All that shit goes right in the trash--and with it, the wealth it represents in society. The products of labor are squandered, and society becomes poor for it.

We need poor people. We need them so we have a place to send our shit so that society can benefit from the products of labor, so that society can remain stable and efficient and advance. There is not an infinite source of wealth out there; if we ever got rid of the poor, we'd be revved like on caffeine, and the adenosine crash is soon to follow.

This is also why I fully support fining people for excessive trash. My taxes pay for landfilling your junk. If you put out 50 bags of trash, you are costing me money, so we'll fine you and make you pay for that extra load instead of everyone else. On top of that, people generate 50 bags of trash when they clean out their homes--when they find piles of old clothes and serviceable-but-disused kitchenware and such and throw it in the trash. You could have passed that on to a donation center at no cost to you--in fact Good Will will give you a receipt, you write the numbers on your taxes and file it and you get a discount on your taxes. Poor kids would have had things to cook food in, and they wouldn't have to choose between having food to eat or having a way to prepare said food so they could eat it. You made society less wealthy, society should extract that cost from your wealth and distribute it back into everyone else's pool of wealth.

"More to go around" doesn't keep happening when you start throwing all that stuff in the trash. Suddenly there's less actually around. You thought it would be there forever?
