One Year Since John McAfee Fled Belize

Velcroman1 writes "It has been a year since fallen software magnate John McAfee fled his adopted home and country — wanted by police for questioning in connection to the murder of his neighbor. In that year, the often eccentric programming pioneer led the media and the public on a wild ride with his outlandish behavior and off-the-wall statements during a catch-me-if you-can escape from the small Central American country. McAfee is a person of interest in the investigation surrounding the murder of his neighbor, American ex-pat Gregory Faull, near his compound in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye. No headway has been made in the investigation — and authorities in Belize are still looking to speak with McAfee. 'Nothing has really changed. It's not a closed case,' police spokesman Raphael Martinez said. 'He is still a person of interest.'"

      I believe the truth lay somewhere in-between what the Belize police are telling us and what McAfee is telling us. His house did burn to the ground right before it was supposed to be sold after all. I suspect that McAfee was bribing and extorting public officials so he could continue his illegal activities but those bribes didn't quite cover murder. So they ran him out of the country but have no interest in a full investigation as it would incriminate their own officials in his prior hijinks.

      They want him for questioning not for murder. Not answering questions is not an extraditable offence (unless your last name is Assange)

      They requested he be extradited to Belize from Guatemala when the Guatemalan authorities apprehended him.

      They haven't charged him officially, and there is nothing in the Belize/US treaty that would obligate the US to turn him over simply for questioning. Belize could make the request, but it would almost certainly be summarily rejected by the State Department since he hasn't been charged with anything. If he was charged with something, then perhaps an extradition request would stick. But until then, it'd probably be a pointless request that has absolutely no standing in the US-Belize extradition treaty that's in place currently.

      So... what Belize police are saying is that they DON'T BELIEVE that McAfee is behind the murder - he is a "person of interest" - someone who may have knowledge of or about the murder that might help their investigation. Not everybody questioned in every legal case is the suspect.

      Sweden has probable cause to charge Assange with rape, so it's questioning of a suspect in that case. AFAIK Belize has not asserted McAfee is a suspect. So think that's the difference.

      By that logic all a suspected criminal would ever need to do in order to avoid prosecution would be to leave the country.

      Her spores don't easily disperse through the air. We're pretty safe if we dig a trench around her, with a radius of roughly 3 metres. We'll fill the trench with pitch, and ignite it. That's pretty the standard approach to preventing the spread of Miley Cyrus.

      What has changed is that the nutcase has come-up with good arguments against ObamaCare. He might be crazy, but he is smart. He needs to be censored. The more attacks the general public read about him, the less likely they'll give his arguments a fair chance. He need to be shut-up now before he doesn't more damage.

      It's like a lot of "controversial" topics on Slashdot (where 95 percent of posters are on one side) that keep being fed on a near-daily basis. There is no real movement, but there's always some little news item that can attract the same collection of rants suitably modded up (and rebuttals modded down so innocent eyes won't suffer from seeing them).

    The weird thing is, I was only tangentially aware of this until I read a piece in Psychology Today. It was couched as a case study of a sociopath. The author just detailed his experiences with McAfee in several different time slices of his life. He was involved in some sort of flying hobby sport until people died, and then sneaked away to Belize. Then his neighbor winds up dead and he sneaked away from Belize.

    I am not sure what credentials the author had to diagnose sociopath, but it wasn't a very pretty picture. A man sort of drunk with power for sure.

    One thing that has amused me, over the latter half of this year, is the strings of advertisements trying to get people to buy property in Belieze and move there, as a retirement home and/or tax haven.

    Apparently the authorities chasing of MacAfee (allegedly on trupmed-up evidence in an effort by corrupt officials to seize his remaining wealth, or something of the sort) has caused others. seeking a comfy paradise and tax haven, decide this country is too risky and look elsewhere.

    It would be interesting to find out how badly this has hurt the country's property values and economy.

    McAfee's "compound" was near Orange Walk Town, on the mainland, which is nowhere near Ambergris Caye. One wonders how many other "facts" in this story are completely false.

      "Compound" may not be the right word for it, but his home was indeed in San Pedro.

      No, his "compound" was not on Ambergris Caye. He initially lived there, but he then built his "compound" on the mainland. Google the lengthy Wired Magazine article about him where you will find this sentence "He began spending more time in Orange Walk, a town of about 13,000 people that was 5 miles from his compound." and then use Google Maps to locate Orange Walk on the mainland.

      afaik the haven't done actually anything to get mcafee to talk to them... which means either they have nothing on the whole thing - quite probable - or are just incompetent in asking the feds to send him over(also probable). and by saying that he is the person of interest, they don't have to move the investigation into any direction which is convinient for them.
