vrml (3027321) writes As the player feels inner anger rising, the in-game character gets angry too and starts shouting and smashing things. Then, the player relaxes and the game character calms down and smiles. This is the kind of game control supported by a system demonstrated in a video released today by the Human-Computer Interaction Lab of the University of Udine. The system detects player's emotional state by using physiological sensors to measure player's skin conductance, facial muscles activity and cardiac parameters. It has been used to build gamified relaxation training and stress inoculation training applications.

My games will know when I'm angry the good old fashioned way -- by finding themselves smashed and/or thrown out a window.
When I play, I'm not typically emotional over the game play, I get emotional over game bugs. Why in hell do I want my character ranting about in a safehouse because I can't access my account info? My emotions have not a thing to do with what my toon would be feeling if it were a person so this seems pretty worthless.
And yeah, I want a bunch of friggin' stickers all over my face. The video sort of reminded me of "World of World of Warcraft".

There are more dimensions to emotions than just Relaxed vs. Angry. For it to be useful for something other than biofeedback this system will need to distinguish Relaxed from other states like Flow, Focused, or Bored and also distinguish Angry from Adrenaline Rushed, or Jubilant, or even Sexually Excited.
FTA, it sounds to me that this system would confuse many different emotions, so unless a player has a fetish for watching a cartoon avatar smash things, it will be just another footnote laboratory novelty.

It doesn't seem like it can actually detect your emotions, just your stress level. Sounds like a shitty game though that would probably end up perpetuating stress in many individuals.

Does anyone remember that old game: "Bureaucracy"? The aim was too keep your blood pressure low enough not to have a stroke and die while dealing with everyday issues. Maybe a remake with this sort of controller is in order, then it could measure your real blood pressure.
Then, maybe, someone can use the measurements as evidence in a suit against... well basically every cable, internet, or phone company, building contractors, and government institution.
