"Fat-Burning Pill" Inches Closer To Reality
Zothecula writes with news that a fat burning pill may be on the horizon. "Researchers at Harvard University say they have identified two chemical compounds that could replace "bad" fat cells in the human body with healthy fat-burning cells, in what may be the first step toward the development of an effective medical treatment – which could even take the form of a pill – to help control weight gain. Not all fat is created equal. While white fat cells store energy as lipids and contribute to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, the less common brown fat cells pack energy in iron-rich mitochondria, have been shown to lower triglyceride levels and insulin resistance in mice, and appear to be correlated with lower body weight in humans. Brown fat makes up about five percent of the body mass of healthy newborns, helping them keep warm, and is still present in lower quantities in our neck and shoulders as adults, where it helps burn the white fat cells."

Same filename exactly, but different sizes, different hashes (obviously), and the one there NOW is an older "version", but it matches the web site's size and hash value. Comical? Yes. Dangerous? You bet!

So I go to google to see this android studio 1.0 and my DL does not match the website DL sha-1 nor the filesize. Google says

Use self discipline, eat less, eat better, be more active, and accept that discomfort and struggle may be required maintain a healthy body.

....it's just been discovered that the fat pill has unwanted side effects including: making you fat.
it's called "Diet and exercise"
I'm a fat, lazy old f**K whose lost 25 pounds over the last 6 months and kept it off. I hate sweating so I get nifty free apps to monitor what I eat and match that with my activity (or lack thereof) and eat accordingly.
Now I'm less fat, a little less lazy. Sadly, getting older. I need a miracle pill to fix *that*!
Now if they can make the penis enlargement pills real, too, the Spam won't seem so bad!
So maybe you should complain to them instead of spamming stories? Or are you waiting for Bennett Whats-his-name to comment?
"Transparent" is a shit show that trades on every stereotype going. A man in drag is NOT a transsexual.
There is over 1 billion people that have problems with weight. Imagine you have 1 billion clients buying your product every month to the rest of their lives... As we want to be always fit and eat what we want.
It already worked, Babs. May I call you Babs?
and if it can solve a problem without discomfort and struggle why the hell not? Christ, it wasn't long ago that we expected the plague as divine retribution ya know...
Hi! I make Firefox Plug-ins. Check 'em out @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mp3-podcaster/
Jeez, they couldn't have come up with this thing when I was in my teens?
Iron-rich midichlorians? Hell yeah, you can sign me up for a test run!
Great one mistake in the production line and the percentage of active ingredient is 10-100 times more than normal. Spontaneous human explosion becomes a reality.
Why not. Actually, I downloaded the Android Studio 1.0 to see if it was any better than the beta version (which kind of sucked, but that's just my opinion). Haven't gotten around to installing it yet, though.

Brown fat development is interesting. Not only it burns fat, but it also produces heat. I always thought it was really dumb to feel cold in winter while we had all that energy stored as fat on our bellies.
Right now the only trick I heard of to develop brown fat was body exposition to cold: it seems the more clothes you put on, the less heat you produce. Now we have some drug, but unfortunately TFA says it messes with inflamatory response, which is not a good news. I think most people will be better with fat rather than with a cancer.
May be appropriate for clinically obese (abnormally low metabolism.) For everyone else who just wants to scarf junk food with no consequences, you are asking for trouble.
Whenever something sounds too good to be true, it usually isn't. I'll put some cash on this being in the Ig-Nobles in a year or two.
Back to 'Eat less and exercise', everyone. That's probably safer, anyhow.
"The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes" - Winston Churchill
I think this is something that needs to be figured out. There are many people who simply cannot lose weight. The problem is that there are a lot more people who are simply too lazy to even try. I suppose it may end up being a better solution for them too. But damn have we become an impatient, instant gratification society.
Any scientific solutions which are based on the backwards assumptions of wishful thinkers and psychopaths is going to make you sicker.
Statin drugs are a prime and relevant example. Drugs designed to lower cholesterol in your body. -Based on the insanely backwards assumption that fat kills.
Fat doesn't kill. There is no 'good' and 'bad' cholesterol. (Well, I suppose the cholesterol which plaques up the arteries could be considered 'bad', but it's not there because you are eating eggs. It's there because you are eating sugars).
You want to not be fat anymore? You don't have to suffer. You don't need to starve yourself or run for miles. And you certainly don't need some screwed up toxic pill.
Eat fat. Cut out the sugars. -Bacon, not potatoes. Butter, not bread. No fruits or refined sugars. You'll look and feel like a superhero. You may even *want* to run, just because you'll be full of energy.
Caveat: Eat animal fat. Plant oils are not the same thing at all.
But pills from Big Pharma? Those people are completely nuts.
Cue all the thin people claiming that healthy eating and willpower are the keys to being thin and the fat people responding that weight is dominated by genetics.
I stole this Sig
Also, what's this "beta blocker" expensive scam? Bloodletting and pressure points are free!
I wonder how this drug would affect brown fat adipogenesis induced by cold exposure, if it would increase Brown fat at a greater rate than one does by taking 30 minute cold showers every day. (Which does work for fat loss.)
My advice is not to let all the people who sit back and claim that the obesity problem is 100% due to people sitting around and eating junk food, granted that doesn't help but everyone is different and some people just have that stubborn visceral abdominal fat (20-30 pounds or so) that though they are not considered fat by any measure .. even by their doctor, would greatly increase their health if they could lose it. I am talking about type 1 diabetics in particular for whom drugs like metformin though thy can cause some fat loss and increased insulin sensitivity, are dangerous because they can also cause severe hypoglycemia. (Metformin works pretty well for type 2 diabetics but that is another story entirely.)
Even in the case of type 2 diabetes, it is not caused just by people being lazy and eating cheetos non stop, Type 2 tends to run in families and is linked to liver disfunction, certain viral infections, cardiovascular conditions and believe it or not, type 1 diabetes within the family. I just laugh when I hear all the "OH You should just stop eating so much.." argument because with most people, their fat loss stalls or they even pack on fat and lose muscle mass when they reduce their calories too much even if they are exercising. Fat loss is just not that simple, and some people are just addicted to criticizing others instead of dealing with their own problems. I know someone will take this as flame bait, but I just don't care what they think, partly because the facts don't match their opinion, but mostly because I have seen people eat more, gain muscle mass and lose fat, without even working out that hard (1 to 3 gym sessions a week.) Everyone is different and the naysayers just tend to down play that.
I hope Harvard pursues this because in addition to eliminating a lot of suffering in the world and saving lives, this line of research is a "Billion Dollar Idea".
The original paper for this was discussed yesterday on In The Pipeline. The point was raised that the mechanism involved, the JAK-STAT signalling pathway is used quite broadly throughout the body in the control of cell growth and differentiation. There are several Janus Kinase (that's JAK) inhibitors already on the market or in development, and they are powerful immunosuppressants indicated for the treatment of things like rheumatoid arthritis or leukemia. They tend to be the sorts of drugs whose advertisements say stuff like, "Xeljanz may increase your risk of serious infection." Notably, Xeljanz (tofacitinib) popped up in the news a few months ago when it was used to grow hair in a patient with alopecia universalis (who was already taking the drug for an autoimmune disease) and the headlines exclaimed that a cure for baldness was on the horizon. Now, a single drug that burns fat, grows hair, and relieves psorasis sounds like a miracle, but the reality is that's a sign that these compounds act more broadly than is desirable.
As the paper's authors themselves put it:
"FDA staff reviewers expressed concern about the number of patients who were left out of the study because they died."
The drug Viagra has the temporary effect of converting fat stem cells into brown fat cells.
If they find a drug that can convert fat stem cells into brown fat that burns fat and has the same effect as viagra but is permanent, I want to propose a name for the drug:
"AWESOME SAUCE"
They can have that.
Wow, no one has mentioned this yet? It's a chemical used today as a herbicide precursor and staining agent, that was originally created and used as blasting aid for explosives, that has the concerning effect of making anyone who breathes it in or ingests it lose fat. This had it prescribed as a diet aid in the 1930s.
And it works better than any other chemical in history. If you ingest it, you *will* burn fat at an incredible rate. It also will give you cataracts, peripheral neuropathy, cancer via extreme free radical production, and possibly just kill you on the spot via hyperthermia and dehydration.
After reading about it and having close friends in bodybuilding circles experiment with it, I'm incredibly skeptical about any pill that claims 'safe' fat burning. Our bodies hang onto fat for a reason, and anything that short-circuits that will probably end up with a hellish biological feedback cycle.
Let the appearance-obsessed celebrities be the guinea pigs for this one.
Encouraging cells in your body to destroy/convert others? if that goes wrong, we have it
What do you do if you have constant acid reflex from your stomach that burns so badly as to impinge even on your work and the most elementary daily activities?
Seven years ago I went to the doctors with this complaint. After that check or another they said I had a bad bacteria and gave me antibiotics. Did not help. OK, says the doctor then we will stop the acid production in your stomach. Start daily intake of proton inhibitor. OK, I start and sure the acid is gone.
It was a long-held believe, which turned out to be partially true, that acid in the stomach is needed for digestion. So I was worried a bit but the pain from the acid was just too much. What I did not realize at the time is that the acid is also a protection against infections. And that this pill does not fix my issue by removing the causes for the excessive acid; it simply masks the problem.
In the last 7 years I also suffered from chronic infection in the bladder and urethra by our old friend -- the candida. When I was growing up the understanding was "never get it via sex because you will have hell of time cleaning up, can take years or never go away". I though "wow, we can do stuff against syphilis but this yeast is somehow unbeatable" [my first degree is bachelor in biochemistry and biotechnology].
Only....due to medical reasons my misuss has no libido for half a decade already, so why did I became infested with the stuff provided that the attack vector of sex is not there? And why being treated by urologists at least 4 times in 2 different countries, private or not --> I tried everything, did not help? No result whatsoever.
Until one day, 5 months ago I got really pissed and though for hours until it struck me. I picked the phone and asked my GP when did I complained from the candida for the first time and when did I start taking the proton inhibitors. Yep, I started the pills a few months before the candida arrived. So I go to the GP and tell him this. He sends me to "not a real doctor" according to the insurance companies, so I'd have to pay.
Ok, I go there and the lady says "I will take you off the proton inhibitor in one week, if you follow my advice what to eat and where to buy it from". She puts me on a "paleo diet" and we take a stool test. HALF of the buggers in my intestine was candida. HALF of more than a kilo that is there!!! Starting the diet , which is simply no grain and no sugar [diary products are OK] and baying everything fresh from the farmers directly took me off the inhibitor in 3 days. That was 5 months ago.
However, the candida is not that easy to conquer so taking caprylic acid [plenty in coconut oil; but I use highly concentrated pills] and probiotic [that brings the good bugs back] seems to be the way. I am almost off the candida infection [can always feel it in the urethra so I don't need tests anymore].
Now, you tell me that "magic pills" are the answer. So, the food industry makes us ill [sugar, fat, salt] then we get a magic pill paying even more that makes more sick and then we spend enormous resources fighting an unwinable battle, whereas the only thing needed was to keep the stomach flora happy by eating real food rather than industrial food.
Not to mention the 15 kg reduction in mass that occurred in 3 weeks! and never came back. I have now the body I had when I was 17, only with more muscles cause I do sports. Not to mention that the candida is also responsible for smelly feet and treating them with a bit of coconut oil 2 times per week removes the smell altogether.
Candidosis is the lead cause of sterility in women. If you have that much of them in you all kinds of bad stuff begins to happen --> from tiredness to swell eyes to urethra infections to even death [how do you like it guys, to be half a man for so many years because some bastards want to make profit instead of cure you --> why do you think these food specialists are shunned aside by the insurance? can you empathize with me about it? can you imagine the horror and the embarrassment?]
We'll get you in on the largest settlement since Vioxx!!

I can just see it now. Millions affected by the desire to lose weight while eating total SHIT. Fuck you, FDA!
I've been losing weight steadily for several months now, on a low-carb, high-fat, "paleo" lifestyle which includes light exercise and intermittent fasting. I do not pay any attention to calories whatsoever, I only avoid carbs and eat as much "real food" as I feel like, meaning single-ingredient, natural, fresh-cooked or raw products, as opposed to the processed "edible food-like substances" which occupy most of the shelf space in a modern supermarket.
In terms of caloric intake, my diet is about 75~80% fat, 15~20% protein, and 5~10% carbs.
I eat a lot of the following:
Raw veg: carrot sticks, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, salad.
Cooked veg: spinach, cabbage, sprouts, etc..
Fermented veg: dill pickles, sauerkraut
Dairy: butter, cream, cheese, cream-cheese, sour cream
- Do eggs count as dairy? I eat about two per day.
Nuts: almonds, walnuts, pistachios, etc..
Meat: the fattier the better, especially organ meats
Fish: the fattier the better.
I avoid all processed foods and carbs in particular: Sugar, soft drinks, fruit juice, bread, pasta, starchy veg (eg. potatoes)... and also "somewhat avoid" legumes in general and soy products in particular.
As for exercise, I don't have a regime or program, I just live in a walkable city with great public transpo, so I end up walking a couple miles per day on average. I also started using a stand-up desk last spring. I've been losing a steady 1lb per week for the last half year, and am well on the way to my target by next summer.

Forgot to mention coconut oil, which is a major contributor to the fat content of my diet.

To all of the "just eat less" people: I guess we don't need condoms & the pill either? Just fuck less, you know...
Eggs don't count as dairy. Dairy is milk and milk derived products. Eggs is eggs...
I'm going to put this as reasonably and diplomatically as possible: eat sensibly.
If you're eating anything other than a vegan diet, you are paying for it with your quality of life and the environment - not to mention the animal lives. This is 100% within mainstream research. Find out for yourselves. Vegans eat more fruit and veg, use 18% percent of the land of meat eaters, produce 20% of the CO2 e, use 1/3 of the water and live substantially better lives while reducing the risk of several prominent diseases. Just one more thing; supplement B12. Now eat with your head, not your habit.

The pills aren't from a company called Adipose are they?
I can't wait for next week's article about male enhancement... come on Slashdot! You can do better!
Hopefully cardiac arrests don't start up again and people lose their life after the lose their weight.
Metabolism and lipid storage is such a fundamental part of cells and boday that it may be hard to change it without unintended side effects. For example that amino acid combo that destroyed heart valves a few years ago.
It's easy to make a fat burning pill. First, you make the pill large and of sufficiently heavy metal so that it weighs anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds. Then you hold the pill over your head and do squat thrusts. Alternatively, you can also hold the pill at your waist and repeatedly curl it up to your chin. Using such a pill in this manner every day or so will eventually cause your fat to burn away.
Proverbs 21:19
A treatment that chemically reduces body fat could help lower the "barriers to entry" of a healthier lifestyle. People who are obese face greater discomfort adjusting their eating and exercise habits than those who are not. Reducing their weight somewhat with moderate use of a medication like that described in the article could mitigate that discomfort and help them make the transition to healthier habits, after which the medication may not even be needed.
