Why Do So Many Tech Workers Dislike Their Jobs?
Nerval's Lobster writes: So what if you work for a tech company that offers free lunch, in-house gym, and dry cleaning? A new survey suggests that a majority of software engineers, developers, and sysadmins are miserable. Granted, the survey in question only involved 5,000 respondents, so it shouldn't be viewed as comprehensive (it was also conducted by a company that deals in employee engagement), but it's nonetheless insightful into the reasons why a lot of tech pros apparently dislike their jobs. Apparently perks don't matter quite so much if your employees have no sense of mission, don't have a clear sense of how they can get promoted, and don't interact with their co-workers very well. While that should be glaringly obvious, a lot of companies are still fixated on the idea that minor perks will apparently translate into huge morale boosts; but free smoothies in the cafeteria only goes so far.
You could probably broaden that to "Americans," or even "people."
I'd be more inclined to limit it to "all young people." The older they get, the more jobs they get fired from, the less likely they are to continue to same behavior (though some never learn).
Biased opinions like yours regarding millennials is what discourages younger generations
who have accomplished absolutely nothing, but expect to be treated as if they're the hottest shit since sliced bread anyway.
from respecting those who
worked their asses off when they were millenials' age, got established, saved, got some security, and now deserve to enjoy it.
You want what older people have? Earn it, like they did. Otherwise, you're just a whiny, entitled little brat.
Biases are bad generalizations as you can tell: Don't use them. Each individual should be treated uniquely.
Indeed. And there are some youngsters who are outstanding employees, and who will advance in good companies until they get where they want to be. The whiny little shits will fail and fail and fail until they learn to act like adults, just like every other generation.
Respect is earned, it cannot be given, even by Mommy and Daddy. That includes self respect.
Ouch! Hot button issue with me.
The diversity push is one of the more irritating things I've experienced in my career. For several years we have had to interview someone who is a minority or female before we can hire a White male. Sounds like a simple way to improve diversity, doesn't it? 'Course, unless you can get a "diversity candidate" to apply, you can't hire anyone. We love when a "diversity candidate" applies, because we can finally hire a White male. It's even better if the "diversity candidate" is the best-qualified candidate, because then we don't have to argue with HR about not hiring the "diversity candidate".
BTW, the "diversity candidate" phrase came from HR.
Fixed that for you so it reflects the reality of IT in the US in 2015
Did you know that Texas is majority minority today and will be Hispanic majority in a few years. Hiring only White males is racist and sexist but you all do it anyway because White males are somehow "more qualified".
But we minorities all know that the real reason White males hire other White males is that you would rather go out drinking with other White males than us minorities:
Guess Who Doesn’t Fit In at Work
A man who wants nothing is invincible
Curious. You seem to be racist and sexist.
You're bitching about white males, despite them being only a small proportion of the workforce in the US.
Shit, even in our Texas office they're not the majority. I guess that reflects the ethnic make-up of the local population though.
Guess who doesn't fit at work? Racist bigoted cunts like you.
