Point-And-Shoot Weapon Stops Drones Without Destroying Them

An anonymous reader writes: Unmanned aerial vehicles — so-called drones — can be helpful, malicious, or simply disruptive, depending on the intentions of those who use them. But while regular folks have to be worried about law suits if they shoot one down, law enforcement officers have a better solution, and one that's currently legal (for them): stop one mid-flight. This can be achieved with DroneDefender, a recently made available "gun" that uses radio control frequency disruption technologies to safely stop drones in the air, before they can pose a threat to military or civilian safety.

    This will work until the drones are equipped with some rudimentary autonomous controls that will take over when the control signal is lost.

    It'll just follow its "panic-mode" programming and fly a direct course back to its origin, or loiter far enough away to be out of range of the hostile jamming.

      The gun also jams GPS making some (most?) of the return-to-home features dysfunctional. But yes, the firmwares in the drones will adapt.

      "Return to Base" is still a mission kill from a police perspective. As long as it's not taking embarrassing videos, whatever else it does is fine.

      They already can be, all open-source too (tons of software for all sorts of things out there). In fact many FPV "drones" right now have a an automated procedure they follow if the R/C signal is lost (usually return-to-home but could be anything). Especially the people that fly past LoS. They almost universally have fully autonomous recovery options.

      So really this weapon won't do much. Even if they also jam GPS it's not like that would bring down the craft (false GPS might though).

      Funny the original definition of "drone" meant that it was autonomous or at least mostly autonomous. Nowadays it's synonymous with "multirotor" which is weird but hey.

      "Return to Base" is still a mission kill from a police perspective. As long as it's not taking embarrassing videos, whatever else it does is fine.

      Then drones will eventually be hardened, use frequency-hopping or burst communication, have longer range optic capabilities, fly at higher altitudes and be stealthier, etc etc. They'll be fixed up to drop remote transmitters, drop cameras into nearby trees and onto nearby buildings, and lots of other tricks.

      I'm not sure the authorities can win this one (although I'm sure they'll try).

      I'd agree with your assessment regarding military drones, but probably not for civilian types. The technology will only escalate if the participants are actively trying to defeat those defensive mechanisms. Why would most drones or their operators care about that, since they likely have no intention of doing anything that would get them in trouble with law enforcement in the first place?

      Besides, if the drone defeats the radio-based approach, law enforcement (or military) will simply resort to the "flying lead" approach. There's not a lot of defensive measures you can take against a well aimed shotgun - presumably the gun of choice for forcefully removing drones from the air.

      Techniques like those are not what the majority of folks would do (and I'm skeptical that would help much at all).

      This thing looks like it *will* work for all the stupid people that unbox and start flying shit where they're not allowed.
      Old school RC pilots are already used to following the rules (or being very careful not to get caught), so they're not the targets here.
      Military use aren't going to be using DJI Phantom's and off the shelf radios. I doubt they're on the same public frequencies, and they're already much more autonomous. If they do go down, they'll also self destruct when possible. These are also not the targets of this device.

      The only two edge cases that are still the target demographic but may be working on countermeasures would be assholes, and maybe a very small number of semi-legit cases (reporters trying to get shots of government functions; small political groups doing a poor job of spying).

      Shotguns are not useful against a drone at 1,000ft above the ground...

      It would be quite simple to make a zapper powerful enough to blow the drone radio antenna input. No controls, maybe no GPS if the antenna is shared.

      That's hardly a demonstration of good. The guy was very carefully leading the drone around, with very slow movements. Any quick movements would clearly have lost the drone.

      It would still be able to know where it last last knew that it was, and a combination of flight by dead-reckoning and trivial obstacle avoidance navigation will be enough to at least get it out of the area where it is being jammed.

      Bingo,

      We've been doing no RF needed autonomous flight since 2012. And big manufactures like 3DR, Yuncee and DJI just release waypoint autonomous flight features.

      This is a solution built on military needs, RPA UAVs vs Autonomous/Consumer UAVs. And it a somewhat too late as the boat's already moved on to autonomous features. DoD and the Aerospace industries need to take a back seat and let the non-defense private industry expand on UAV technologies.

      Yeah optical flow and a compass is enough to escape to a safe distance, this is not new at all.
      You would have more luck using another drone to drop a net and parachute combination on the intruding drone, then you have evidence to track the owner with while avoid the danger of rapidly falling objects.

      That also makes it highly illegal. Under FCC regulations, nobody can engage in willful or malicious radio interference.

      Even members of law enforcement wielding one would be subject to jail time and huge fines for operating one....

      Only if the attacker is following the target for a considerable distance.

      Autonomous cars do not need constant GPS information to function. Otherwise they will panic every time they go into a tunnel, under a wide bridge or even city streets hemmed in by tall skyscrappers. They are likely to be able to use inertia guidance (after all, they do know their speed and direction) coupled with inputs from their cameras to determine exactly how far they have travelled and where they are currently. I would not be surprised if they will be able to perform OCR on the road signs (large, high contrast, solid fonts) to determine which turnoff they need to take. And all this before we even add in intelligent infrastructure that communicates directly with the car.

      And even if all else fails, just keep following the road until they reacquire the GPS signal and plot a new route base on their current position.

      Reliable GPS blocking would be quite hard - unless the blocker is positioned between the drone and the satellites - the drone could have a directional antenna which is only sensitive to signals from above.

      Yeah but who watches the watchers. Or in other words, it would actually require the government to go after the government. But because it is regulation and not law, even if the government does go after itself, the government can just change the regulation. And that can be done without any congressional interaction.

      I'm not quite sure what you're implying... that it's dangerous to do that? Assuming you're not firing solid slugs or heavy buckshot, it's reasonably safe to fire a shotgun into the air. Birdshot raining back down retains little of it's kinetic energy.

      But that is exactly the point, no average person would do it, these things are very specifically aimed at people that do have the balls to fly over restricted areas.
      They've just started a war they cannot win because it will eventually require highly illegal and disruptive tech to defeat.
      Drone operators will always win in the end, just like piracy does. It cannot ever be defeated legally.

      Hell, it could even get to the point where people smartly use light over large distances to control it.
      Throw a bunch of IR sensors, UV sensors, anything, all over it, boom, confuse the fuck out of the people trying to overthrow your drone because it is still moving around intelligently. All you need is line of sight. If you are within a city or town, a rooftop will suffice.
      There are an insane number of things you could do to allow it to move without any signal, and even more to make it move with multiple signals.
      Jamming isn't even all that hard to get around if you know how to do it properly.
      You could even just program a set path with inertia monitoring, or install some god-tier image-recognition software with it too, give it a baseline for measuring distances, send him off to explore the world.

      If the authorities do not/cannot arrive in a reasonable time to get the drone out of do not fly zones or get it away from your property, how good are they going to be with a temporary invisible ray that makes that drone malfunction?

      If a drone is nearby and you want it to stop being nearby, a bullet is a bad way to get rid of it; bullets leave evidence and scare people. Radio waves don't scare people and are hard to find evidence of.

      I knew of someone who had an over powered CB radio. He could make themselves heard on band's equipment in clubs as they drove by. 3-4 of them were able to put a TV station off the air from their parking lot. The FCC was chasing them and never caught them. This device will be harder to catch.

      I'd think though GPS is important for driverless cars, they'd have to have backup strategies for when the signal gets lost (driving thru long tunnels, in downtowns with big buildings, etc)

Also I wouldn't consider it a stretch to believe including anti-jamming to be the next stretch target for the groups producing the solutions to the existing struggles with conflicting signals with multiple flyers in the air. I see this as effectively the same problem caused by less sophisticated radio signals. Side note, I'm doubtful whether jamming a GPS would allow most devices to fly home as stated, as I believe most devices fly-home via GPS unless there's some sort of visual indicator of their destination (infrared lit landing pad or something) and would probably just cause most common drones to hover as though out of range, Gyros and pre-programmed safety instructions taking control.

    Shooting high intensity RF through a pointable device? One that could also be pointed at, oh I dunno, that annoying a-hole talking too loud on his phone? Or that cop chasing you for whatever reason?

    Not to mention the hazards of having 20 lb of plastic and steel falling several feet out of the sky onto who knows what?

    Prolly won't work for a lot of them anyway, if they lose signal they're programmed to head home.

      Well, as a long-time RC pilot, I see the problem with cheap drones as a "loose nut behind the control." Serious RC folks don't fly over other folks backyards to annoy them. They fly is specially designated areas, or places where no other folks are hanging around.

      When one of these "drone pilots" flies his cheap drone into a kid's face and turn in into hamburger meet . . . well, the rest of us will suffer from new laws. As soon as the "Sleeping Giants" of lawyers wake up to this potential, there will be lawsuits coming out your ass.

      We will be happy if we can fly a paper plane in our own backyard anymore.

      Is it too much to ask from drone pilots, to exercise a bit of discretion, on where they fly . . . ?

      I doubt responsible RC flying will be affected. When you're already following incredibly liability-paranoid rules, you're doing what the lawmakers may eventually force on others: no safety hazard, no privacy concerns, and most importantly, no embarrassing videos of police.

      Nope. GPS signals generally come from above - noise guns generally work from below. So use a very directional antenna then. Also, for how long will the cop be able to aim this jamming device? The drone can simply fly up - the cop will soon be unable to see it with unaided eyes.

      High powered wide-angle jamming devices can defeat directional antennas and work at a distance even when the cop can't see exactly where the drone is. But then the device isn't lightweight anymore - and it is jamming the entire neighbourhood and causing trouble for all sorts of legal activities. (Truckers relying on GPS for making deliveries in cities they don't know, people using phones, radio, tv, internet, garage openers, babycalls and so on and so forth.)

      If it weighs 20 lbs., then it probably has autonomous features and won't simply fall out of the sky.

      Which means it will not fall out of the sky. Since this is law enforcement, the drone will lead them straight to the operator. I'm not sure what you think the problem is.

      In effect, the handheld unit is likely a directional jammer.

      GPS comes from above and to the sides. Directional antennas don't help a lot when you need to recieve at least 3-4 separate signals through a 180+ degree hemisphere.

      Most drones aren't equipped with any "return home" equipment. They're just remote-controlled helicopters.

      The video is a simulation. The device does not work as advertised. And without shielding, it's blowing RF back at the operator also. Very much a scam.

      That would rather assume that the cops could follow the drone. The drone having complete freedom of movement and the cops generally having to stick to roads. Or at least be hampered by walls and fences.

      If the operator is in the same open park as the cops, then yes, he'll be caught. But in an urban environment, not necessarily. And probably not it he actually intends mischief.

      Indeed. They've bolted the device to the front of a military looking gun body, to imply that works like a gun. But in reality it'll be leaking jamming radio in most directions and many frequencies.

      Directional antennae don't usually block all received signals outside the optimal window. They just vary the sensitivity enough to work under normal conditions. If a malicious high powered RF interference is targeting you, there is not much you can do to block the interference while still receiving the intended signal.

      Most drones that cost less than $150 aren't equipped, true. The DJI Phantoms and heavier quad/hexacopters do indeed have an emergency RTB mode. My hexacopter, when flying in a GPS mode, has a mode that will set it to hover if it loses signal. I can also throw a switch on my controller that will cause the copter to RTB and land on its own.

      The only difference between your RC aircraft and a drone is the skill required by the operator. RC planes and helicopters have a natural filter: You have to be pretty serious to put in the practice hours. A drone can be out the box and in the air in ten minutes, no practice required. The technology beyond that is basically the same: Fans spin, air goes down, craft goes up.

      You assume that laws are sensible. This is what I envision happening:
      1. There will be an Incident. I don't know what the Incident will be, but it will involve a drone operator doing something stupid. Perhaps someone will crash a drone into an aircraft on takeoff, or fly one into a school-bus and cause it to swerve off a bridge. But someone will be stupid, and people will die.
      2. Panic, outrage, Something Must Be Done.
      3. A strict law will be passed that tightly regulates the use of any radio-controlled aircraft to prevent a repeat of the Incident, possibly requiring a license to fly one of any size. RC aircraft will be covered under this law. Drones for commercial use will be fine, but recreational flying will be dead. There may be an exception for those tiny little toy quads, but only if they don't carry a camera.
      4. RC pilots can join amateur chemists, orchid growers and model rocket enthusiasts in grumbling about government control - three other groups who have seen their hobbies suppressed by tight regulation because some of the essential materials they use are also of criminal use and so prohibited or likely to attract unwanted government attention.

      2.4GHz isn't hard to aim. I'm guessing the bit on the front houses a yagi array - it's about as directional as any any antenna other than a parabolic can be.

      The higher the frequency, the more 'light-like' radio gets. Easier to aim, harder to penetrate.

      I think these drone pilots need to ask themselves one simple question: Would you want someone you don't know buzzing their drone in your private backyard" . . . ? The technology of drones is not the problem . . . it's the common manners and respect of certain pilots that is the problem.

      I'll take a wild "Leap to Faith", my apologies to Søren Kierkegaard, who probably didn't say that at all, but it is the same problem with guns in the US. A lot of gun folks in the US keep their weapons locked up, and just shoot at targets or empty beer cans in their backyard. But these days, for whatever social reason, a lot of folks think that it is cool to obtain a weapon, and shoot up other folks. This has nothing to do with the technology. The folks shooting up other folks, well, pick your curse word and insert it here.

      The US will eventually have more restrictive gun laws, which will mainly affect honest, lawful citizens. These folks barnstorming their neighbors with drones will result in a ban of all RC critters. Yep. It only takes a small minority to ruin fun for everyone else.

    Let's see now, the typical police officer "cop on a beat" is high school educated and promoted from within, make a hundred grand a year in the big cities, and is best classified as a loose cannon that does exactly what they want, when they want, and to whom they want to. They have a vested interest in you NOT being able to do any surveillance. I'm so tired of hearing about the "Beggars with Badges" finding a new way to be empowered to show their superiority to me. The asshats need to be taken down a step.

    By the looks of the device, it has a 2.4GHz yagi antenna, which would mean that it simply saturates the device with a 2.4GHz signal. What about drones flying spread spectrum 480MHz, or even 5.8GHz? And that antenna won't cover the GPS frequencies, either.

    Face it, this is simply a tool to stop DJI Phantom drones and similar products. Nothing to see here.

      What about drones that are flying a programmed route and have some kind of IMU capability that isn't 100% GPS dependent?

      Keep the disruptor trained on it long enough and you'll eventually get it lost due to IMU drift - but all that cutting off comms really does is cut the operator's ability to adapt their flight pattern, like, complying with a bullhorn command to return to base.

      By the looks of the device, it has a 2.4GHz yagi antenna, which would mean that it simply saturates the device with a 2.4GHz signal. What about drones flying spread spectrum 480MHz, or even 5.8GHz? And that antenna won't cover the GPS frequencies, either.

      I see two antennas there and the lower one looks like a log-periodic antenna to perhaps cover the two lower ISM bands and GPS. I assume then that the upper antenna is for 5 GHz.

      You'd want to only do it in situations like country roads at night. No other traffic on the road, and the police can pull the bodies out of the wreckage in daylight the next morning. We live on a 45 mph county highway and when the rednecks are out whizzing past at 80 mph at 3 AM is when something that dramatically 'stops' them would be useful.

    On the other hand, if the drone is on a mission of wanton destruction and the police know it and fail to shoot it down because they fear civil liability, people will be in an uproar.

    But what if the police either sincerely but falsely believe the drone is on a mission of wanton destruction and shoot it down under the "exigent circumstances" or "protecting the public" doctrines?

    What if the police just say they sincerely believed it but the real reason they shot it down was that they were just ticked off that there was a drone in the air that they didn't control?

    As for the last two questions - how can any judge, jury, or court tell the two apart, assuming the officers involved don't have any known history of lying? Answer: In most if not all cases, they can't.

    There is a complete unknown as to what the drone will do when it loses it's control signal. Some are configurable: Return to home, stay in place, land in place, fly to a pre-defined destination, and that's assuming anything is set at all and it won't fall out of the sky and crash.

    Then there's a question of if the drone is actually capable of autonomous flight at all at the current time. I had a problem with the inertial control system and compass on my drone on one flight. It went crazy and started flying off quickly into the distance, flicking it to full manual I was able to fly it home however given it's batshit crazy response if my controller would have dropped out it would have tried to return home autonomously and who knows where it would have attempted to fly / crash.

      I bit for forum trolling pointed me towards a sudden loss of compass or a sudden loss of inertial navigation causes massive problems if the firmware doesn't take it into account. GPS less so because it's easy to detect a loss of GPS and fallback. In my case I was using APM:Copter on a home made drone. I was flying using alt-hold mode (completely manual but uses barometer for altitude control and stick position to indicate go up or go down). When I flicked to GPS-Hold to stay in place and take a picture it held fine for about 45seconds and then it started acting like it was being blown by the wind, climbing and taking off. Switching to alt-hold mode even with the stick down it refused to want to land, so I switched it to fully manual and fumbled my way back to where it was and successfully landed. I didn't have enough debug data to know what fully went wrong only that at no time did I have less than 8 GPS satellites and at no time did my position jump erratically.

      This isn't an isolated incident for me either. I was filming a firewater main test at a local oil refinery. The first flight worked flawlessly despite incredibly high winds which drained my battery in record time. A good 13min of flight time without issues. After landing and switching battery I took off again and about 3 minutes in the quad started taking off towards the river at which point I straight away realised I was losing control, switched it to manual again and crash landed it at my feet.

      I have seen first hand similar problems with a NAZA based hex. My friend and I were flying on a farm in the country when he suddenly said he was losing control. He switched to ATTI which had no effect on control, then he turned his controller off to force fail safe which also had no effect. A second later the hex bifurcated on a tree and he he went white as $3000 worth of gear rained down. I couldn't see it since he was using a fatmax headset, but I saw the hex draw a sideways arc across the sky losing altitude. After discussing this with a friend he said he also had a drone with a NAZA controller go crazy and said something about compass calibration being the cause, but that sounded more like a guess than anything else.

      Also I can say is that in my case it wasn't GPS as the cause and for what its worth I have not configured any of my drones to RTH for that reason. Always land in place though I have a sneaking suspicion that this wouldn't work in that scenario either.

      Thanks for sharing the details . I think it points to a simple problem : code it not certified for flying, so it may crash.. I worked some time as a subcontractor for Airbus (Yes I'm French near Cannes), and 90% of the effort was spent on code certification ,with proven tools, and so on. I've seen a professional drone pilot who carried an exepnsive € 5 000 IR camera . He simpy had 2x NAZAs controllers, could switch from one to another inflight using a second RC transmitter in the 868 MHz ISM band. Maybe that's the ultimate solution to flyways, but not worth to protect a €20 entry level goPro..

      Not for a go-pro that's for sure. Youtube shows some truly spectacular crashes and one common thing is that a go-pro often survives them. A better camera on the other hand, or a part of the airframe carrying power / signalling can get quite expensive quite quickly.

    Both this device and any theoretical HERF gun would also be potentially troublesome in the most common off-limits areas which are around airports. I'd hate to seem something like this used to take down a troublesome drone and inadvertently swamp local radar coverage.

    Most drones/RCs are controlled with the 430 or 480 MHz band. 2.4/5.8 is typically for data uplink for video and such.

    Only idiot companies (like Phantom who put all of their crap in the microwave bands) will have their product affected by this device (or not given 1W is the maximum allowed transmission power feed to the antenna in the FCC rule book for these frequency ranges, and I'll bet this thing goes way over that so the FCC will say "No, you can't do this.")

    To boot, it's illegal to advertise jamming devices of this nature. Start pressing the FCC to put Battele out of business.

      Actually, a lot of RC uses 2.4 MHz now as a control frequency. Just take a look at Futaba's air systems page :http://www.futabarc.com/systems/air.html. All but one of the radios listed there are 2.4 MHz. There are some systems using 430 MHz, but I've seen way more on 2.4 MHz.

      Maybe the *good* drones. Most of the consumer kit runs at 2.4GHz for a very simple reason: It means the controller can be an app on a mobile phone or tablet. The drone acts like an access point. Cheaper than having to ship a dedicated control device!
