HTC Delays Vive VR Launch Until April 2016 (htc.com)

New submitter Will Mason writes: The HTC Vive VR headset, originally planned to launch by the end of this year, has been pushed back until April 2016. HTC plans to unveil a second developer kit for the Vive at CES this year, and they plan to make 7,000 additional units available to developers. Recently, HTC's head of marketing, who said on stage that the product would launch this year, jumped ship for the secretive Magic Leap startup in Florida.

It seems like all of them have been delayed several times over the 3-4 years, does anyone know what the big issue is? Or is it just various issues from vendor to vendor?

I know occulus was bought by facebook, so that set them back, and htc...well had some financial woes earlier this year (and still do). M$ has the holo-lens but I think its limited (and quite expensive, not to mention more augmented reality rather than vr), sony is another year...ect. Just seems like vr keeps getting pushed back, is there a technical reason that i'm not aware of?

Everyone knows that the first product they release has to be really good. After years of hype, not immediately living up to that hype will be a death sentence for the product.

I expect all VR headsets are waiting for screen tech to catch up - more DPIs, lower response rates etc. It's probably about where it needs to be to yield an acceptable image.

But problems for VR are going to be much bigger than display tech. Once the wow factor wears off (extremely fast), VR is going to have to come up with compelling games people actually want to play and can play for an extended duration without puking their guts up, becoming disoriented, tripping over cables / tables / dogs or having enormous space to work with.

Throwaway for obvious reasons. I cannot say who I am or what my motivations are without making it easy for certain companies to identify me. I apologize for that. I have been keeping this to myself in the hopes it would get out organically, but recent events have shown that hope to be foolish. This is my story. It is 90 percent true, with slight falsehood edits to protect identifiable information and some informed guessing/rumors.

1- HTC has known about the delay for many months. The June shareholder report was hotly debated internally. Cher Wang, the CEO, already had to apologize for missing targets, losing money, and killing wearable projects after investing millions. They already knew they would miss their holiday target, but announcing a delay for Vive - one of only two brights spots in the company, along with the iPhone clone Hero phone - was deemed too risky with HTC stock at an all time low. They decided to wait until after their stock buyback propped up the share price.

2- The delay crept further and further, but project managers tried their best to hide that from subordinates and leadership, fearing a leak or termination. Few people knew about the delay, or the reasons for it, even HTC employees working hard on the project. The reasons are as follow:

---2.1 The displays are not ready. I do not know all the details, but HTC and Valve both wanted to ship the same resolution as Oculus for compatibility and performance reasons. Oculus tried to keep the resolution of Crescent Bay confidential, but Valve-friendly developers with prototype hardware were happy to help with anything that would ensure easy multiplatform support. Their displays have the same resolution as Oculus, but have a critical flaw: pixel consistency. On low brightness and low contrast scenes, a lack of uniform pixel brightness leads to a rainbow speckle pattern on the image that moves with your head, like screen door effect, but much finer and all different colors. The dev units have this issue a little bit, but the panels used are binned to select for only the panels with the best performance, much like binned CPUs that overclock with more reliability.

---2.2 The camera system is not ready. HTC is working with an external partner on the camera. This partner made bold claims about what they system could do, but could not deliver. HTC is now left with decision: Reduce cost by removing the camera and going back on their announcement, or including the camera and relying on future software updates for full feature operations.

---2.3 Build quality is not ready. The new ergonomic design is comfortable, but much harder to manufacture. Many moving parts all conspire to break often. They can still ship, but only knowing that many Vives will fail in homes and need replacing. This is a very expensive way to ship a device, because purchase price has to cover warranty as well! And the next part...

--2.4 The cost is more than expected. Now that the design is final, HTC knows what it costs to build. The building cost is similar to Oculus, because they use similar components. If HTC decides and announces price now, they don\'t know what will happen, and everyone might go crazy. It is safer to wait for Oculus to announce, see what the price is, see if customers like the price, then decide how much profit they can afford. They can bundle free movies or games to make Vive appear even more attractive. This part is only a guess: HTC might have to do something crazy if Oculus announces a price that is too low, like removing a Lighthouse or the camera.

---2.5 The audio quality is great, but when controllers are held close to headsets, sometimes there are static noises.

---2.6 HTC is asking Vive developers to please release their VR games in April when the Vive comes out, and saying that if they want to distribute games before April, to do it for free through Vive developer sharing channels. They do not want VR games to start selling when only Oculus will be on the market. Vive was built with Valve licensed technology, an

Clearly not. Nobody introduces a new product at the *beginning* of a quarter; but by announcing for April then slipping it to June, they buy 2 months but don't anger the shareholders, since it's the same quarter.

      Solution:
1- This has no impact on the solution to the problem. Every failing project is hemorrhaging money and under time-to-market pressure.

2- This is a management/culture problem and isn't going to improve. I expect a lot of people are going to jump ship now before the impending disaster/overtime "crunch"

---2.1 This isn't something you can fix via software. Upper management needs to hold their suppliers feet to the fire(making commitments backed with guarantees) and live with whatever outcome happens. You can't delay a product release over something like this, and crucifying the person who bungled the requirements definition/procurement from inexperience or otherwise isn't going to get the Vive out the door any faster.

---2.2 Management needs to get their lawyers ready to apply pressure to the external partner in the event things go tits up. Their misrepresentations also make for a convenient scapegoat to shareholders should the project go to shit. In the mean-time: acquisition of the supplier/developing an in-house alternative capability should be a priority. Frankly, this camera system is the only distinguishing feature that makes this product attractive to me. If there was a way to achieve a motion sickness free experience without it(ultralow latency is a myth) then I wouldn't care but finding a practical solution to the problem is what makes the Vive novel.

---2.3 This is the single most important problem to fix. The rainbow LCD display and camera problems translate to a buggy user experience and customers/developers will just have to "deal". Refunds impact the bottom line.

--2.4 This is a cop-out/excuse to justify the other delays IMHO. First-mover's advantage says "forget the indecision and risk-adverse what-ifs: make a good decision and cut prices later if you have to" -If they had hit an Xmas release then they wouldn't need to worry about low-balling so much. A thanksgiving limited pre-order would have given them an opportunity to test the price reception at the same time the customers were willing to part with their money

---2.5 This is a non-issue. Fix it in a future release

---2.6 This is totally fucking delusional. They're behind schedule so they expect everyone else to keep their developer's salaries on ice because...? Sitting on your hands while payroll bends you over a barrel because of a "that sounds like a you problem" is insane. It's only because they control the distribution channel this has some prayer of being effective. If I WAS a Vive developer I would be looking to jump ship to Oculus at this point.

3- This sounds like a culture of blame has everyone so afraid of failure that nothing will ever be good enough. As long as the guilty parties are still shopping their resume looking to jump ship they'll continue kicking the can down the road. If they're promising April and know it won't be fixed until ?June? hopefully this is just production/assembly/distribution time and not a complete HW design/release cycle.

This reeks of Kickstarter. I expect better from HTC. I love their mobile handsets, whoever managed this project should be fired.

The Vive isn't going to be a breakout success, they should start managing expectations now and realize this field has a long history of failure.(eg. VirtualBoy)

This is the classic waterfall/kitchen sink vs. agile multiple small releases problem. HTC has placed all their hopes in this project saving their company and as a consequence are not making clear-headed decisions. They will probably sell less than 1 million of these devices. I would be shocked if they sold 250,000 in the first month. The technology is still seen as immature and nobody wants to be the sucker to pay $350 for immature technology. If the early adopters rave and love it: I'll pay $350. Otherwise, I'm waiting for a $150 price point. I already have a DK1, and getting rid of the screendoor/low resolution isn't that high of a priority to me.

      Bottom line:
-if HTC can't weather the storm and wants a risk adverse solution
