Windmill Blade Molds 3D Printed By National Labs (energy.gov)
MountainLogic writes: Last year ORNL produced a 3D printed Shelby. This year, the National Labs are using the mother of all 3D printers to make windmill molds cheaper and faster to produce in the US. The size of the current 150 foot utility scale blades are being extended with these techniques. US DOE is providing a leading role to advance US manufacturing technology and competitiveness. Welcome back rust belt, we missed you.

For mobile users till that gets fixed.
Minimum threshold fixed. Thanks!
Why not 3D print the blades directly? I was told, in no uncertain terms, that 3D printing is the future, and anything else is just Luddite.
I was told 3D printed houses, 3D printed cars,3D printed airplanes,3D printed Mars colonies,3D printed rockets,3D printed food,3D printed organs.
Now all you have is a big mold? So what?
I have trouble believing that 3D printing is cheaper and faster for a mass-produced commodity like windmill blades...
As if EPA-free, OSHA-free, NRLB-free, low tax, zero-tariff Asian manufacturers are somehow magically incapable of operating 3-D printers. Between Ming Yang, United Power, Sulzon Group and Goldwind Asia is already the biggest wind power region, and the DOE's printer isn't going to change that. Nothing will change that until the trade agreements are fixed.
They always stand against common sense.
Wow, /. is getting very liberal. There's more Republican bashing here now than on Microsoft NBC!
Logical people have always stood against illogical people so it is no surprise.
Maybe if the Republicans didn't keep moving further right every year since Reagan was president...
holy crap Seymore, that WHOOOSHING sound isn't coming from 3D printed windmill blades.
the preceding comment is my own and in no way reflects the opinion of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
He was a Democrat until 1962 so of course those Republicans hate him.
Raygun was an xian.
And a character in the Star Wars prequal was named after him to make fun of him.
Some of those logical folks are down in Venezuela right now, being terribly logical. Mostly they're standing in line though.
Really? Really??? The 2000s called, they want their catch-phrase back.
Assuming this story isn't from Europe, are you sure they made a mold? Or did they make a mould. I suspect that perhaps they made a mould based on context. Mould: a hollow form or matrix for giving a particular shape to something in a molten or plastic state. Mold: a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae.
"SPA/BSA: You wouldn't download a car!"
"ORNL: Actually..."
I've noticed the same thing. There's a large demographic of /.'ers who are literal, and if you oppose what they say, you'll get modded down.
Of couse a new Republican government will only be interested in how well these blades burn in coal-fired power plants, but I'm sure the technology could be used to make something SUV parts, bomb casings, or something like that ...
Perhaps, just perhaps, thats why they are printing the MOLDS not the blades?
But, I know thats a bit much to ask, actually comprehending what you read..
BTW, you also also wrong about strength, you can directly print in sintered titanium if you want (but this wont be..)

That does sound a lot friendlier than "wind turbine."
systemd is Roko's Basilisk.
There's a large demographic of /.'ers who are literal,
Are they literally literal?
APK likes to ask for responses to the same things over and over. Maybe he just likes the responses?
Mother of all 3D printers, you say? So if we kill that one, no more "3D-printed" nonsense? Hm...
ROFL, I stepped away from the PC when I was writing this. Didn't realize I submitted it unfinished. I was going to say that there are a large demographic of /.'ers that are atheistic and liberal, and will definitely take any opportunity to take a shot or argue with those who don't agree.
