Microsoft Launches HoloLens Emulator, No Headset Required (venturebeat.com)
An anonymous reader writes: As promised, Microsoft started shipping its $3,000 HoloLens development kits today. In addition to sharing that bots are coming to the new platform, the company also released a HoloLens emulator, which lets developers test holographic apps on their PC without the need for a physical HoloLens. You can download the emulator now directly from here.
Thinking about building a holographic app? HoloToolkit on GitHub is a collection of scripts and components that may help accelerate your development.
Yeah, thanks for linking directly to a Windows EXE file - NOT!

Demo of the Hololens if you missed it. Will be interesting to see where the technology goes :)
probably a marketing decision by ms.
shotgun marketing....
This is the result of there being a big Microsoft developer conference going on. As the magicians on stage perform each trick, the press gushes over it, again and again. Submitters here at /. can't stop themselves from sending in each one of them separately, it seems.
I deny that I have not avoided attaining the opposite of that which I do not want.
You mean the company that just had its annual developer's conference?!
"Slashdot hates on Microsoft too much!"
"Slashdot is getting paid by Microsoft!"
Hrm, if it's in San Francisco I may need to go buy eggs and toilet paper.. *mwuahahahaha*
kidding of course
or am I?
-The wise argue that there are few absolutes, the fool argues that there are no probabilities.
Hrm, if it's in San Francisco I may need to go buy eggs and toilet paper.
If it's in scenic New Jersey, I may need go buy brass knuckles and stilettos
Isn't the cultural diversity between the east and west coast in the USA such a wonderful thing!
Schroedinger's Brexit: The UK is both in and out of the EU at the same time!
"Slashdot(community) hates on Microsoft too much!"
"Slashdot(host) is getting paid by Microsoft!"
I like to squeeze nice big titties. Don't you?
Well we get messages from people saying we post too many MS hate articles on the front page
How long until the Oculus Rift is hacked to provide the I/O required for the emulator and vice versa?
Or maybe they had a big press conference today where they announces atleast 6 large products.
and by people do you mean ms Tay :)
It's a trap
It is great being able to test drive the concept of HoloLens without having to pay $3,000 to do it. But it would be nice if they also allowed avoiding the $9,000 fee to try Surface Hub by allowing HoloLens SDK emulator and actual HoloLens users to pin a virtual Surface Hub to the wall. This might also allow using the Surface Hub concepts in ways the physical device is not intended to be used such a horizontally (table, floor, ceiling) or in sizes currently not available.
I don't care if it is from Microsoft, you don't link directly to an executable Slashdot!
It seems to me Microsoft is trying to hijack the holographic nomenclature for profit? Every time a stereoscopic pair of images are interchangeably named as holograms, D. Gabor spins on his grave :(
You're confusing the adjective holographic with the capitalized brand name Windows Holographic. This isn't holography, it's Augmented Reality. Even the brand name shouldn't be used because it misleadingly hijacks a common word.
Microsoft gets 6 free articles on the main page. Is this what slashdot is reduced to, shilling for the MICROS~1 organization?
Misread that headline. Read it as "Microsoft Launches HoloLens Emitter, No Headset Required".
Was REALLY excited for 5 seconds and then read what a Microsoft HoloLens actually is.
To quote a review of the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie: "It was like expecting a puppy for Christmas and getting a goldfish."
Sounds like someone is salty.
My response to these kinds of comments is always "if you want another story on the front page, submit it". There is never a reason to complain about lack of content on a user content driven site.
APK likes to ask for responses to the same things over and over. Maybe he just likes the responses?
