Israel Accuses Facebook Of Aiding Terrorists and Hampering Police Investigations (reuters.com)

Reuters calls the remarks "ramping up the pressure" as Israel prepares legislation which would allow it to order social media sites to remove posts it considered threatening. The security minister says Facebook currently "sets a very high bar for removing inciteful content and posts" and "sabotages the work of the Israeli police" by being uncooperative.

BetaNews writes that "while Facebook waits for content to be reported before acting, Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said that the site should be pro-active in seeking out offending content instead."

As Americans it's difficult to view any abridgement of speech as unacceptable. But this is a country in basically a war zone and with a different perspective on how their country should be governed to ensure its survival.
Facebook should "pull out" of Israel and most of the Middle East. Ironically, given that the core tenet of the internet is to work around damage, this case would be pretty simple to do. Just block an entire country's IP and in the case of VPNed access, use the social graph to detect Israelies and ban their accounts.
It's a great example of how scary data gathering is because Facebook really does know everything about you. There's no hiding in their world and they can use that data against you in any way they wish.

As someone who has lost a loved one due to a murder, I can't stress enough how vile it is to hear people act like the Israelis making these accusations. If you want to police everyone to catch a couple of bad eggs, then do it on your own time. Facebook may be evil in its own way, but they have zero obligation to do your dirty work. I've run across countless Anti-Israel and Anti-Jewish pages on Facebook that clearly spread racism and incited people to commit violent acts against Israel and Jews in general. Ever single time I've reported such pages for violating Facebook's terms and conditions Facebook ended up doing nothing.
