Boeing To Lay Off Hundreds of Engineers Amid Sales Slowdown (reuters.com)
According to Reuters, Boeing has warned its employees that it "planned another round of involuntary layoffs that would affect hundreds of engineers at its commercial airplanes unit." From the report: The latest job cuts followed a prior involuntary reduction of 245 workers set for May 19 as the company responded to increasing competition and slowing aircraft sales. The additional layoffs are due to start June 23, according to the memo from John Hamilton, vice president of engineering at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are moving forward with a second phase of involuntary layoffs for some select skills in Washington state and other enterprise locations," the memo said. "We anticipate this will impact hundreds of engineering employees. Additional reductions in engineering later this year will be driven by our business environment and the amount of voluntary attrition."
Some exec is looking at the millions he saved by getting rid of all that pesky R&D/QA and going, "Man, can you believe we spent millions on personnel who just made sure stuff worked right? Good thing that's all going to my fat bonus now."
Why are the engineers always being fired first? Guess it's being something thougth by some random MBA course or something?
It's the Art of the Deal. See what President Trump can do to a company with a couple of tweets. Boeing and other American companies will listen when the President says to do something.
Who will they pick? Will it be the young, new people or will it be the experienced, much older crowd that gets the axe?
From witnessing layoffs (as-then late-20s engineer) in Boeing Defense, I think we can reasonably guess it's going to be the expensive crowd. Boeing is a terrible company and their employee usernames are numbers (which you log into via a VM on your machine that runs IE8). If you ever want to feel dehumanized, then go get a job there and hate your life.
I wonder how this report squares with the one from late February that "Boeing and Airbus Can't Make Enough Airplanes To Keep Up With Demand". Poor workforce management? One of these two stories must misrepresent the truth.
But what about her emails, did you verify them first before voting?
The Art of the Deal is about "self interest" not what aligns with everyone else. Wny would anyone think he was running for office out of the goodness of his heart? The "Art" is in exploiting people dim wits.
Sadly you believed him. Even worse you think the President of the United States has control over corporate hiring and layoffs.
I'm guessing you're a Bernie supporter. You'll believe just about anything won't you?
Good call, everything is trumps fault! Coffee cold? Fuck Trump! Lost remote? Fuck Trump!
STEM doesn't look like a viable career to me.
he caused it. The rest of the world is cancelling orders because they're nervous about doing business with us while we've got such an unstable leader.

There has never been, and never will be, a shortage of engineers.
There is, however, a surplus of greed and stupidity amongst the 1% that means people with decades of experience and education are forced to run around like dogs on the street looking for work. Meanwhile none of the 'shareholder activists' and C level executives will ever feel even the slightest ounce of pain, regardless of how many failures they create.
There was no purpose in winning the cold war - we have replicated the worst parts of the Soviet Union all by ourselves.
They took a hit when Trump announced "Cancel Order!" to their Air Force one bid. Our entire economy is built around short term stock bumps because most CEO pay is in bonuses and stock options (so that they don't have to pay income tax on it).

Trump took credit for several companies deciding to not lay off workers even though those decisions were made well before the election. If he wants credit for things he didn't do, he deserves the blame for things he didn't do as well.
No one but the most blighted morons believed him. Only reason to vote for him was the same reason people voted for Shilary, they were not each other.
I'm a Bernie supporter, I believe in the fundamental decency of people. Except for Shilary, tRumpf, and most politicians they are fundamentally evil and/or corrupt.
Only I can judge you.
exactly!
Only I can judge you.
Don't blame Trump. Boeing has had some problems with quality recently.
In 2005, FIA (run by Boeing) was partly canceled. The New York Times called it "perhaps the most spectacular and expensive failure in the 50-year history of American spy satellite projects." From space.com, "But Boeing quickly ran into troubles on the highly ambitious and complex FIA program, which fell years behind schedule and overran its budget by billions of dollars."
In 2011, the SBI Net program was canceled. "It was originally envisioned to stretch the 1,969-mile border between the U.S. and Mexico but initial phases of the $1 billion project took longer than anticipated to complete and covered just a small portion, 53 miles, since the project began."
According to Wikipedia, the Joint Tactical Radio System (JRTS) project has had major problems. "The JTRS program was beset by delays and cost overruns, particularly Ground Mobile Radios (GMR), run by Boeing."
The Dreamliner had major problems, including fires. From Wikipedia, "The FAA issued a directive in January 2013 that grounded all 787s in the US and other civil aviation authorities followed suit. After Boeing completed tests on a revised battery design, the FAA approved the revised design and lifted the grounding in April 2013; the 787 returned to passenger service later that month."
This usatoday article, titled "Some of Boeing's programs have problems", lists other problems with Boeing. For example, "V-22 Osprey. The tilt-rotor aircraft, made in partnership with Bell Helicopter, is under congressional scrutiny because of concerns about its high cost of operation, reliability and safety." and "Joint Tactical Radio System Cluster 1. Boeing's management of the project for the military was so bad it received a stop-work order from the Defense Department. Eventually, the program was restructured rather than canceled but with Boeing in a diminished role."
I wonder if some managers are looking at these problems, and deciding that Boeing isn't the best company from which to order planes and services. That would hurt Boeing's sales.
I was laid off while working for Boeing Defense and it's a comparatively good company. The third time was the charm for me and I saw them lay off both younger and older - the average age in some areas is probably somewhere in the 40's. They gave us two months notice. I was older which meant a hefty severance and early retirement including medical. Plus a 401K. My friends in other aerospace and my brief experience with a smaller firm didn't fare as well. Boeing's a yuge company and if assigning you a BEMS ID makes their life easier so the fuck what. Sure there's political crap going on and they favor keeping useless crony managers over engineers, but you'll see that everywhere.
Presidents don't create jobs.

trump more trusted than media
As near as i can tell Trump does have people that believe he is a truth teller, and they are not a minority. I'm not sure how many that is, but maybe 5-10% anyway. In short the election was tipped to trump by, well, those blighted morons. Ain't democracy cool?
I voted for Bernie in the primary. He is a rare politician. His positions have been pretty consistent throughout his long history. Hillary was fine though. Sure she was uninspiring and kind of boring, but the email crap was all way overblown. In many ways the whole election was a joke. You had torrents of information about Hillary to base a decision. All the good and all the bad. You had negligible information about Trump, mostly because it was hidden, so if your just comparing bad vs bad, well Hillary has a problem "believe me". It becomes particularly a problem for the blighted morons who are incapable of properly weighing the facts.
Did you believe Bernie when he said that he would make healthcare and college education free?
Econ 101 - there is no such thing as a free lunch.
I partially wanted to see Bernie win - just so I could see him squirm when it came time to deliver on all the free stuff he promised.
I wonder if the H-1B body shops will shift from computer services to aeronautical engineering soon.
Presidents don't create jobs.
You mean he was lying about that too? NO, no no. He said it and we must believe!
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/0...
Since being elected, he's created over 600 thousand already. To wit:
http://www.opposingviews.com/i...
At the top of our agenda is the creation of great high-paying jobs for American workers, and we've made a lot of progress," Trump said, according to Politico. "You see what's going on," Trump added. "You see the numbers. We've created over 600,000 jobs already in a very short period of time, and it's gonna really start catching on now because some of the things that we've done are big league, and they are catching on. Already, we've created more than almost 600,000 jobs."
We're winning baby! We're finally winning.
The shepherds did so well protecting the flock that the sheep no longer believed that wolves existed.
A parasite, reprobate and malcontent nihilist, who the world is better off having as a fictional character.
I would assume the 787 design is essentially finished, which I assume means a big reduction in engineering. Is there anything else in the pipeline, or has commercial aircraft design become too expensive? Hire & fire is nothing new in aerospace.
There has been talk ending production of the 747. I wonder if this is the motivation?
There's a lot of reasons to hate Trump, but Boeing announcing layoffs is extremely hard to justify getting onto the list. If anything, I suspect you can more easily blame the unions that are probably picking and choosing who gets to stay and who gets cut (and you can reasonably guess it won't be the people that are part of the union bureaucracy).
Damn, sounds like a deal. If you go to a military college, everything you just said, but it's 6 years afterwards and you are in harms way. I'd take the NY deal...
In other news... Indian software contract houses today announced new billion dollar contract with Boeing,
Staying with aviation news: The FAA today announced a new initiative to "update" engineering standards covering aircraft manufacture. a spokes person was quoted as saying "certain FAA standards, especially those covering software quality/safety in aircraft have been unnecessarily complex and burdensome to the aircraft industry for years".
after they get their bump. It'll cost more because they'll pay hiring bonuses but that's about it.
The problem is our entire economy is being run by a well connected good 'ole boys network with very actual smarts. Things would go a lot smoother if we acknowledged our ruling class and took steps to reign them in but as things stand we just pretend they don't exist.

"take farm subsidies"? They're not direct subsidies; it's an insurance position. That insurance position was established by the federal government for two reasons. The first is to ensure that there's an abundance of food most years, so that in a particularly bad year, there's enough food. Cutting that would have a remarkably terrible affect on poor people during drought years.
25% of the DoD budget? Okay, which 25%? See, most of the DoD budget is for salaries, benefits, pensions and healthcare for the pensioners. I suppose you could steal the pensions from soldiers, but that seems like a very unhealthy idea if you think preserving the republic is worthwhile. You could, I guess, gut the military end strength further, but it turns out that when we reduce the number of military personnel, we promptly panic and replace them with contractors. So while that's a nice idea, it won't actually accomplish anything unless you reduce the required workload of the military. Well, procurement. They say the airplanes cost a billion dollars each. Sure, well, except that 60%-80% of that money goes into basic science research, applied science research, engineering research, systems engineering and development. It's already burnt. It's gone. We could, I guess, fire the scientists and engineers. I'm sure that would make the world a better place, because depressing salaries for engineers and scientists is really consistent with improving education.
Oh, and NY didn't make your college free. They indentured you for 4 years after college. Move out of the state, and that "Free" becomes a "you owe the government right the fuck now."
But if those jobs have their benefits and income slashed due to Trump, how is that any better?
Jobs, jobs, jobs!... all right, what? 12 hour work days, no sick pay, no time off, no healthcare... whee, welcome to China my friends, brought to you by Trump and friends.
Nope we are beginning to see the effect of Trump's electronics ban on Gulf airlines. They are moving orders away from Boeing to Airbus
**Life is too short to be serious**
I have studied aeronautics and I was told that U.S. aeronautical engineers were called "gypsies". All the U.S. aircraft were designed by the same team of engineers, who were hired for a design job, fired afterwards and therefore went from factory to factory to be able to make a living. For us European students, it was totally absurd that you would have to spend a large part of your life studying and still end up as a dragged-around gypsy.
Nae king! Nae laird! Nae yurrupiean pressedent! We willna be fooled again!
The Dreamliner's batteries continue to pose a problem, bursting into fire mid-flight. You thought 40-50 smoking Samsung phones around the world was enough to make a big issue of, in case someone brought one onto the airplane? How about the actual electronics installation of the airplane bursting into fire? They certainly did a good job with keeping that from rising to a storm in the media. The thing is a flying fire-trap.
Also, there's the realization that, probably since all the recent NSA/CIA fall-out, European products are a safer and more secure, both for the flyers and for the airlines. The U.S. gov is hurting its own large businesses with all the spionage and sabotage they are conducting.
> Boeing To Lay Off Hundreds of Engineers Amid Sales Slowdown
Boeing is silly. They should invest in their engineers, re-train them to become railway rolling stock experts and buy one/some of the remaining american railways tech companies to act as a Boeing filiale and then invest in re-learning the art of railway electrification, which was co-invented in Italy and the USA some 110 years ago.
As the global climate change grows ever more significant and destructive, the extremely polluting practice of airplane travel (which spews soot right into the troposphere for maximum damage) must be drastically reduced, e.g. overland flights won't be allowed. They will be replaced with electrified bullet-trains powered by a hydro dam, wind turbines and possibly nuclear reactors based national / continental high-tension grid. Boeing will be found with pants down in such a situation.
The arch-rival Airbus is in a good situation, because Europe is brim full of railway tech companies, both for rolling stock and the track(side) infrastructure. They will just buy some of them and good to go. Boeing will be dodo.
He's incompetent?
Hillary Clitless couldn't even win the election! (unless you change the long-established rules, you know, the ones she was supposed to know)
(and your kind were calling him Hitler just a little while ago - couldn't sell that, either!)
Galt seemed fine to me. Rearden and the co were the true sleazes, given the entirety of the rail in the US was built using the government's eminent domain, so the forges were funded chiefly by government contracts in the first place. Not to mention the whole patent inanity (for 1940s era) on an alloy which is predicated on governments existence.
Now the Fountainhead and Roarke (rape aside), he was heroic.
The fictional supervillians like Toohey were less than one dimensional cutouts, but the faux heroes were otherwise pretty banal. Great philosophy intro for Jr. high, but best discarded before finishing high school.
Spent years listening to this diatribe from the right...anything goes wrong, blame the black guy in the president's chair. Personally got very tired of it. I think Trump can take the blame, but no, god damn right wing nuts want to just go on blaming Obama even after he has been out of office almost four months.
MAGA
It was coming. Boeing was having issues since 2014. You simple minded people can only hold one element in your tiny brains. Trump.
Absolutely everything in life is much more complicated. Absolutely everything problem has more than one reason or cause.
But thinking is lost in this country. Simple minded retards roaming around. Blaming everyone else. So stupid, they don't realize they don't know all the details, and there is always more than one detail. And they don't care.
So these retards keep spouting off one word answers to problems. Thier simple minds just can not grasp more than a single detail.
Do you think you are educated? Do you think you are intelligent? You are not. If you wee, you would understand many circumstances affect these huge situations- most we will never know of because they are private high level decisions.
So time to grow up you retarded simpletons. Open your eyes. Take more than 5 seconds to think about something before giving up.
Fucking loser retards.
You will see it is much hire. Trump will be elected a second term. By a much larger margin. More people will vote than in history. His will will be by an even larger margin.
And you people will be so surprised again. Because you just don't get it.
Modding down a post that was filled with verifiable facts shows the depths of depravity that some have fallen into.
