Mexico's Strongest Quake in Century Strikes Off Southern Coast (bbc.com)
An earthquake described by Mexico's president as the country's strongest in a century has struck off the southern coast, killing at least 33 people. From a report: The quake, which President Enrique Pena Nieto said measured 8.2, struck in the Pacific, about 87km (54 miles) south-west of Pijijiapan. Severe damage has been reported in Oaxaca and Chiapas states. A tsunami warning was initially issued for Mexico and other nearby countries, but later lifted. The quake, which struck at 23:50 local time on Thursday (04:50 GMT Friday), was felt hundreds of miles away in Mexico City, with buildings swaying and people running into the street. The tremors there were reported to have lasted up to a minute. President Pena Nieto said about 50 million Mexicans would have felt the tremor and that the death toll might rise.
Disaster after disaster after disaster.
...5000 pesos in improvements!!!
There is no southern coast of Mexico, friend.
Strongest earthquake in a century, or in this century?
Must be that climate change rearing its ugly head again.
Blame Trump — if it weren't for his reversing of Obama's hurricane-ban...
But let's not jump to conclusions — most hurricanes, earthquakes, and other so called "disasters" are entirely peaceful and we should not judge all of them by the effects of the few.
In Soviet Washington the swamp drains you.
This submission is a general news story at best, and shouldn't be on Slashdot's front page.
If we wanted to be subjected to general news like this, we could have gone to the website of CNN, MSNBC, BBC, or any other mainstream news network.
There's nothing particularly remarkable about this earthquake. It's not even a top 40 earthquake.
I can sort of understand Slashdot reporting about an earthquake like the one that hit Japan a few years back, causing the Fukushima problems. But there was clearly a significant technology aspect to that ordeal, with the nuclear power plant being affected.
And I can even sort of understand Slashdot reporting about the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that killed over 200,000 people, given its very significant death toll.
Both of those earthquakes are among the top 4 most powerful recorded earthquakes. There's at least something notable about that.
But this earthquake? It was powerful, but relatively minor in the whole scheme of things.
The whole point of a site like Slashdot is to have a narrow, but deep, focus on a specific type of news. In the case of Slashdot it should be news focused on math, science, computing, and technology. A relatively routine earthquake isn't relevant here.
Instead of irrelevant general news submissions like this one, we should have relevant ones about things like the release of the LLVM 5.0 compiler suite or submissions about how Mozilla's Rust and Servo projects appear to be failing. I'd submit them myself, but Slashdot's submission process is broken (it requires an account).
The more that Slashdot pollutes its front page with useless submissions like this one, the less relevant Slashdot gets. The whole point of Slashdot is to focus on the news that other news providers just don't bother with.
Republicans don't understand basic science. When you heat something, it expands. These constant earthquakes are just going to get worse.
The entire Mexican Jumping Bean Reserve has been found empty...
Well, with most of the mexican population now illegally residing in the US, it is now important news here....
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.........
Hurricanes wouldn't dare come close to a well-armed population.
Liberal policies are causing divine wrath!
The earthquake hit mexico, and they are getting a hurricane. Houston got all the flooding from hurricane harvey, a democrat stronghold. South florida, tampa and orlando all voted democrat for the last election and that is where hurricane irma is heading. Coincidence? I think not... WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! This man has the nuclear codes too! What is he going to do when he gets bored with his hurricane and earthquake making machines?
Well, with most of the mexican population now illegally residing in the US, it is now important news here....
50+ million people moved overnight? I hardly knew.
Did they take buses, or was it by plane?
But Trump just doesn't care about anyone except the rich. That's how he be.
Given the state of most of Mexico, total damage is said to range in the 10's to 100's of dollars.
The comments here are stupid. I actually RTFA in protest. Here is a summary provided by SMMRY: A tsunami warning was initially issued for Mexico and other nearby countries, but later lifted. The quake, which struck at 23:50 local time on Thursday, was felt hundreds of miles away in Mexico City, with buildings swaying and people running into the street. BBC in depth - Earthquakes A history of deadly earthquakes Can earthquakes be predicted? Twenty-three people are reported dead in Mexico's Oaxaca state, 17 of them in the town of Juchitán, state Governor Alejandro Murat said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had originally said that tsunami waves of more than 3m were possible along the coasts of Mexico, with threats also facing El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. Panic on the streets BBC's Lourdes Heredia The earthquake has brought back memories of the tremor of 1985, which left massive destruction in Mexico City and a death toll of 10,000. At magnitude 8.2, the quake outstrips the deadly 1985 tremor that hit close to Mexico City and caused thousands of deaths. Mexico is currently also being threatened on its eastern coast by Hurricane Katia.
So North Korea dug a really deep hole, lowered in a thermonuclear weapon, filled in the hole, then detonated the device. Buildings as far away as Moscow shook. There are two particular properties of this planet that I believe makes that test responsible this earthquake and the many lesser earthquakes that happened around the same time but haven't received much attention. For example there was just a 3.9 in the Midwestern United States with other small rumblings elsewhere. I suspect this is far from over. So those two properties? Techtronic plates and our planets ability to vibrate at a high frequency planet wide. This is often described as the planet ringing like a bell. The initial shock from the detention got the ringing started. This in turn caused plate destabilization leading to shifting. The earthquakes resulting from this have added more intense, and probably long-term "ringing" to the planet. I expect more shifting of plates and more earthquakes. I would not be surprised if a tsunami or two will come from this as a direct result. This could last for months as has been observed in the past in the aftermath of large earthquakes.

If you don't mean "since 2001", try using different words.
It's Peña. Please , write it like it is, it's not that hard, just copy&paste or whatever.
And with most right wing White nationalist Nazis looking for some reason to cheer the return of Zeus and the Viking kingdom (lulz btw) we here in America need to know about all disasters.
That's the single stupidest reasoning for an earthquake that I have heard in quite a while.
i wonder if perhaps Hurricane Harvey might have triggered this. I saw a report somewhere a few days ago that said the tectonic plate under Houston was actually compressed due to all the flooding. The pressure has to be released somewhere...

Just enough so that there is no Mexican Olympics: you see, all the Mexicans who can run, swim and jump are in the USA!
Thanks for sharing. The Nazi trolls just like to try to role up the racist troops on anything related to minorities.
Actually that's the main way the Democrats get votes.
The (few) Nazis are despised only because they use this tactic in an unauthorized manner.
