We have our daily stand-up for 15 minutes every day so we all know what everybody is doing, and the occasional longer team meetings. It's not bad. Our developers are all over: 1 in Argentina, 1 in Columbia, 1 in Panama, several in Chicago, several in three different California locations, and 1 in Seattle. We are very productive. Fortunately we don't have widely varying time-zones. I think that helps.
Lately our team has moved to TypeScript from Java to write server-side services. Now, Java is not the best thing in the world admittedly, but it's head and shoulders better than JavaScript. I think typescript is just a hack to make javascript a bit more palatable than straight JS. I think of "lipstick on a pig", but really typescript is just a really bad makeup job on a dead rotten pig.
Note that Trump's budget released yesterday calls for a cut in education funding. This affects the working class. The rich can afford private schools. The masses get dumber, the rich get more powerful. When will it end?
The last time I was there it was late summer, I had to wear a jacket, the sky was perpetually overcast, and the mountains still had passes closed with 7 feet of snow.
That must have been quite a while ago - last ice-age maybe? Mid-late summer is near perfect in Seattle, and there would be absolutely no snow in the passes at that time of year. I live here, and I don't like (more accurately, hate) the weather for 9 months of the year. But those three summer months are spectacular.
This "blunder" as it were, isn't even on the same calibre as Personal Computer Marketing. The self-driving car isn't ready (yet). How can they release it to the masses if it's going to injure/kill a bunch of them? Dumb comparison.
As another poster mentioned - it's pretty hard to prevent this sort of thing while allowing the pilot to do what (s)he needs to do in an emergency situation. These aircraft are already quite automated, but to completely wrest control of the airplane from the pilot, especially at low altitude... That's not good. And it would be difficult for the computer to definitively say: Ok, the pilot is in control, or the pilot is suicidal. And even if the pilot is suicidal, what does the aircraft do then exactly?
The only way this works is if there is remote control (as in, drone tech) - and that has to be absolute perfection.
I don't have mod points, so I'll just add a "me too" post: An old family friend got fleeced by one of those "Microsoft Support" scams and not only did he lose some money, his computer was pretty much useless. He was otherwise frugal and didn't want to get a new computer, but his computer took - not kidding - five minutes to boot up to be usable. After discussing with him his habits, I put Linux Mint on his computer. It's a slow computer, so it does take a minute for it to boot up, but it runs flawlessly and has for years. He's happy as can be and is able to talk to his kids/grandkids regularly now.
I'm not sure why all the laptop manufacturers insist on 1080p even (especially) for their high-end models. Surely Apple doesn't have a corner on the market for HiDPI displays. The only ones I've found that consistently has HiDPI is of course Apple, and AlienWare.
By the way, is there anybody here that runs Linux straight on AlienWare and does it work well? Asking for a friend...
Your grandchildren live in a wonderful world thanks to Oil.
I realise I'm probably feeding a troll, but here goes...
I agree that oil is pretty much the one thing that has brought us to the "modern age", but we have - and are continuing to pay the price for the way things are. Interestingly, most of what you point out can be dealt with without using so much oil. I know that we can't just shut off the spigot, but we need to cut back. We're trashing the planet.
Well, I never said that writing concurrent/multithreaded apps is easy. But the features in Go make it a lot more palatable. You still have to be aware what's running concurrently.
There are a few aspects of Rust that I like, but there are more things that I dislike about it, and I'm afraid async/await is another thing I would probably dislike. I looked over some of the reasoning behind it, and I'm frankly not finding particularly solid reasons for it. OTOH, Go's several different ways of handling concurrency are much easier to grok and "get stuff done".
Neither Apple nor Microsoft will ever fix any computer problem for any amount of money, ever.
Well, now - we use Apple products in our home, and we choose to have AppleCare on our purchases. It doesn't add much to the cost of the products, but we've saved well more in repairs than what we've paid in AppleCare costs. My older MacBookPro bit the dust just before my AppleCare ran out, and they replaced the entire motherboard. I essentially got a new (older) computer. I still use it.
I've always loved a good cross-country drive, and I still do. But to drive to work every day? No thanks. I get to work from home, so I don't have to deal with rush-hour local traffic (Redmond/Seattle) thank $DEITY - If I had to commute to the office every day, I'd have to kill somebody.
Leading the way with useless "innovations". Let's see: No headphone jack. A notch in an otherwise good display. I'm sure there are more, but both of those are show-stoppers for me.
I notice that my feed as of late is more ads than anything else. I really would rather keep up with my friends across the country, but I'm starting to think about dropping FB because the ads are getting rather unbearable. And I use ad-blocking software.
I tried to use dvorak for about two months - solidly forced myself to use it, and got moderately good at it. Had to relearn all the muscle memory I had for the prior 20 or so years of typing on a qwerty keyboard. I didn't find it particularly advantageous over qwerty. And when I had to sit down at a server or somebody else's computer, I had to do a reset on my brain to type the old way. I just went back to qwerty.
I think the upshot here is: qwerty is "good enough" and nothing has come along that drastically improves upon it, so for the foreseeable future, it's staying put.

Seriously, there are more important problems to solve. How about something that's actually useful?

You are making a wonderful world for my grandchildren.
It would seem these days that any display that large should be 4K by now. It has better resolution than 1080P, but come on...

I like Plus Codes. They are well thought out and open and free. I'd like to see more adoption of it.

I seriously cannot comprehend how mind-bogglingly stupid [some/most] politicians can be. How do these people even function in society?

The Congress with Robin Wright. It's part of the storyline that she gets scanned so she doesn't have to act again.

It *supports* 60fps. It also *plays* all the other frame rates.
My Nexus still gets regular updates.
Conference calls do tend to waste some time, but the person who wrote this article is just a whiner. You take the good with the bad.
