Google Releases Tool To Help iPhone Hackers (vice.com)

Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai, writing for Motherboard: Google has released a powerful tool that can help security researchers hack and find bugs in iOS 11.1.2, a very recent version of the iPhone operating system. The exploit is the work of Ian Beer, one of the most prolific iOS bug hunters, and a member of Google Project Zero, which works to find bugs in all types of software, including that not made by Google. Beer released the tool Monday, which he says should work for "all devices." The proof of concept works only for those devices he tested -- iPhone 7, 6s and iPod touch 6G -- "but adding more support should be easy," he wrote. Last week, Beer caused a stir among the community of hackers who hack on the iPhone -- also traditionally known as jailbreakers -- by announcing that he was about to publish an exploit for iOS 11.1.2. Researchers reacted with excitement as they realized the tool would make jailbreaking and security research much easier.

    I bet it would be easier for Google to come up with a tool to help us Root our Android OS?
    It seems that Google has been getting very vindictive lately (more then usual) to its competitors. Normally companies have a degree of compartmentalization where it can work with and compete with the same company at the same time. Google seems to be taking competition across the board so units that are not in competition are not playing fairly with the other company.

      Meh, it's about time someone addressed the misconception that i devices are more secure.

      Also, it's easy to root Android. Unlock your bootloader and install / modify the OS yourself. Of course, it'll be unsupported as it's running out of spec and you may lose access to certain features like secure payment, but that's your decision.

      You don't need this sort of tool to Root Android; rooting Android is easy and can be done by the end user, by design.
      As the article points out... this tool is a product of Google's Project Zero researchers, not the teams who work on Android; these security researchers are part of Google's pro-active cyber defenses and do good for the security of ALL vendors' devices and software --- the group is essentially the opposite or counter to organizations such as the NSA that engage similar teams to find and build exploits with the intention of weaponizing them --- instead, Google shares exploits with the affected vendors and then responsibly discloses, instead of keeping vulnerabilities found secret, and their many notable discoveries make the internet a safer place.

      What exactly are you trying to infer here? Google releasing a security research tool is not an unfair, illegal, or anti-Apple act.

      Google has root access on your device and can remove/add whatever software they want on your device remotely... it's just a matter of giving you root access to your device that you are supposed to be owning.

      Maybe, but then there's this story (the one you commented on) where Google took a strong pro-iPhone-user position.

      Not that it's nearly enough, but with just this one story, Google has done more to make the iPhone viable, than Apple has done to-date in the entire history of the iPhone.

      But they *are* more secure.
      That's not to suggest that they're invulnerable, but iPhones are far more likely than Android phones to be running the latest, fully patched version of the OS, and far less likely to be running compromised software.

      You're right, I misspoke. "Misconception that i devices are secure". Does it make a difference? A little, but not much. Bottom line is, users are open season... You just don't hear about it, so it's hard to defend against.

      For example, people complain Android "sells your information" but then never stop to realize that APL does so too. APL profits from these ad companies to analyze user data, and the app store is rife with it (see article about two weeks ago regarding app tracking in Android; the companies have i device versions too, but the researchers couldn't produce statistics on i devices. Why? see next paragraph). There have been many victorious lawsuits and app pulls over this, but most never got mainstream coverage..

      Then you look again: whenever the app store has been breached with malicious software, what's the same part of the story?: Practically every one of them has been from the admission of the author (i.e. security researchers). There have been just one or two exceptions that were discovered by researchers analyzing a handful MAJOR app devs (Gameloft, etc.) that security researchers were able to detect extraneous information leaving the idevice that were not permitted.

      Why? There's only one company that can do so reliably, because even read access to an app's excutable is disallowed. How can security researchers access apps code and look for commonalities or sketchy code? Have you noticed your idevice battery life draining faster? Maybe it's a bitcoin miner... how can you tell it isn't?

      It doesn't really make a difference whether or not you get root/jb when apps themselves are doing it "legally".

How can one consider some vested marketing interest in release of a tool to exploit the number one revenue creating mobile consumer device OSes? Nope purely research oriented.
