Facebook Says It is Sorry For Suggesting Child Sex Videos in Search (cnet.com)

Facebook issued an apology on Friday after offensive terms appeared in the social network's search predictions late Thursday. From a report: When users typed "videos of" into the search bar, Facebook prompted them to search phrases including "videos of sexuals," "videos of girl sucking dick under water" and, perhaps most disturbingly, "video of little girl giving oral." Shocked users reported the problem on Twitter, posting screenshots of the search terms, which also included multiple suggestions relating to the school shooting in Florida last month. The social network appeared to have fixed the problem by Friday morning.

Maybe, maybe not. I've noticed that Google likes to try chaining searches, like if you search for "redheads" and then "girls with glasses" it'll show you far more redheads with glasses even though that's not what you searched for right now. Which means that if you're mixing "serious" and "not so serious" searches, different people using the same family computer etc. you're going to end up with a lot of weird shit.

None of those searches are especially bad. In fact, they're very mild compared to the really bad stuff. Even the "little girl" one is most likely not about age, it's just people are too stupid to know the word petite. Especially people searching for porn on FB. 18. Censorship just insulates us creating a bubble by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 0

Censoring suggestions just hides the reality of the world around us and ensures people are 'shocked' about relatively common realities of the world and end up supporting the misplacement of resources by those with ulterior selfish motivations. For instance out of touch bubble the middle and upper classes live in causes more because we end up voting for laws that ultimately are written to benefit private interests (ie corporations) on the argument they will ensure equality or benefit the poor. This leads to redistributing wealth (or I would argue theft of the poor's resources) for what is seemingly a good cause (argument is to benefit the poor- but ultimately mostly doesn't and rather benefits the elite)- but then indirectly deprives the poor of the resources they need to put a roof over there head and food in the stomach. Take Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) for instance and it's prior incarnations in MA and NJ. My partner in MA prior to me knowing him was forced onto the street because his employer had to take part of his paycheck and allocate it to health insurance (he didn't ever actually get health insurance and to rectify the situation he had to quit his job- this is what the company told him- so he did). Then he spent a lot of time dealing with the IRS because they wanted to penalize him for not having health insurance when it was the fault of his employer. He later moved to NJ and having no employment went on government 'insurance'. Ultimately the average person wouldn't even be able to take advantage of this 'insurance' because they lack the means to get to a doctor covered by the 'insurance'. He was ultimately refused service in spite of having verified with both doctor and government health insurance people his 'insurance' would be accepted. Ultimately he did have a drivers license so I lent him my car to drive the 40 min to get to the doctor (he had to do this twice) only to end up getting the worst possible care imaginable (they wouldn't even do the routine shit they were suppose to do in a check up). You think you have it bad with real insurance? Just get this government crap- he hasn't seen a doctor since even though he has since gotten real insurance. The harm these programs do and the cost to the rest of us who are forced to cover the poor is significant to both alike.

Most if not all of us are living in a dangerous bubble. This leads to wrongly or badly prioritizing insignificant threats over more serious ones- like the top killers (diseases, etc). For instance losing 3000 lives from terrorism on 9/11 was insignificant and not worth pursuing military action over relative to the millions of people we have killed trying to "solve" the terrorism problem or the 55 million people which die every year from other causes.

We just about all hide some aspect of our lives from others for fear of what others may think creating an even worse situation rather than face reality. While I'm not implying we're all searching for these particular videos (though clearly many are) how many people go to work and talk about the pornography they watched last night? Or the affair they are having? This is how we end up with laws and serious misuse of resources to do thinks like 'protect the children' when the threats to wealthy modern American lives are almost non-existent (or even non-existent) from the supposed threats relative to other real threats that we overlook. We end up with substantial waste in terms of resources that might otherwise actually go to causes that could have a serious and positive impact on peoples lives- like a cure for cancer (or certain types thereof) that actually kill people in great numbers every year and have a real detriment to peoples quality of life. If there are only a handful of serial killers each decade why are we locking up people who have committed a single murder for instance? The resource uses don't make any sense. If prisons are suppose to protect us from the typical murders it doesn't work because the typical murders isn't a serial killer. They pose no threat and locking em up makes no sense. It would make more sense to lock up people whom demonstrate a record of violence to protect the public than your typical murder.
