An anonymous reader quotes a report from Gizmodo: A British teenager who gained notoriety for hacking a number of high profile United States government employees including former CIA director John Brennan and former director of intelligence James Clapper was sentenced Friday to two years in prison. Eighteen-year-old Kane Gamble pleaded guilty to 10 separate charges, including eight counts of "performing a function with intent to secure unauthorized access" and two counts of "unauthorized modification of computer material," the Guardian reported.
Gamble, otherwise known by his online alias Cracka, was 15 at the time that he started his hacking campaigns. The alleged leader of a hacking group known as Crackas With Attitude (CWA), Gamble made it a point to target members of the U.S. government. All three of these men lied to the nation on national television while testifying under oath to congress. The head of the CIA using an AOL account isn't as bad as it seems.
Brennan had an account with AOL from the beginning of the internet, and only used it for personal, trivial things. He had a strong password, and didn't reuse passwords. All his work-related communications were done elsewhere.
The "hack" was Gamble calling up AOL pretending to be Brennan, and having a sysadmin change the password.
Brennan did nothing wrong, and could not have prevented this. In fact, he even did things right by not having any business-related communications on that account.
I don't know the specifics of James Clappers' hack, but it was very likely the same. Assuming Clapper didn't have work-related stuff on his personal E-mail (and there's no reason to suspect that he did), this was nothing more than some high-level people being embarrassed by a kid hacker.

The law is not just or moral and taking action against it is heroic even if a bit naive. All governments steal and write laws by which they punish those they dislike- rather than to use it against violence. The government has a violent monopoly and many are under the impression it can do no wrong all the while millions suffer at its hands. Hitler murdered millions of innocent civilians, but so does the US government over ill-conceived military action in the interests of private entities for the sake of oil. War may be argued for as an act of revenge (in response to 9/11 for instance as a means to get us into war such as in Afghanistan and Iraq), but the ultimate motivation is financial. As a society it makes no rational logical sense to murder millions in retaliation for a mere few thousand deaths considering the end to life which routinely occurs as a result of everyday life (cancer, diseases, car accidents, etc).
If you think you are a rational and logical individual who puts freedom above safety or should I say "safety" you should be in the free state with me and other like minded people. New Hampshire is the place that liberty minded people are migrating to in droves thanks to the Free State Project, Shire Society, and dozens of other independent groups who have come together to bring about liberty in our life time-somewhere- and that place was decided many years ago by principled libertarians via a vote- New Hampshire. Libertarians at the national level are a joke- and don't even understand what a libertarian is. It's someone who doesn't advocate for the use of violence (ie like what the state does) to achieve social or political objectives outside of self defense. Violence, theft, and fraud, are bad, but near anything else goes so long as its a voluntary interaction between people. Guns=not an issue. Drugs=not an issue. Gays=not an issue. Tax=theft, serious problem. Marriage=not the government business. Licenses=serious problem, one should need no license, but rather should be held liable for injury of others. In New Hampshire we don't have car insurance mandated in law for instance even though we do have liability in the event one causes an accident. We do have drivers licenses, but that would be a violation of principles of principled libertarians moving to New Hampshire. Security, education, etc are not the governments concerned, but that of the individual and individuals should be able to hire security of there own choosing rather than have money stolen from them for setting up police forces. We didn't even have a state police in New Hampshire until fairly recently. Ensuring that all children can get an education is a worthy objective- but it should not come at the price of theft. The government indoctrination programs (public schools) also don't cover just the poor and are little more than wealth redistribution programs. Without excess taxation for these sorts of things the vast majority of the "poor" whom get all sorts of social benefits would be able to afford to send there kids to school, feed, house, and cloth themselves. The reality is its governments stealing from everybody that results in the devastation of the poor's resources such that they become (and for that matter the middle class) dependent on the government. It reminds me of how the middle class in the UK are becoming so dependent on hand outs due to over taxation that the middle class can't even afford to hire a babysitter without financial assistance from the government. The middle class can't afford property. The middle class in the UK are poor. The middle class in the US isn't quite as impoverished, but many well educated persons are stupid, living in places like NYC, and Silicon Valley, and fail to move to where the cost of living matches there pay, thus resulting in poverty and demanding social welfare [because they are stupid].

Were the CIA serious about IT security it would reward white hats who successfully broke in and penalize those inside the organization who failed to protect against that. Instead, they penalize white hats and there is little to no accountability within government agencies.
That is not a radical idea, it is the convention outside of government. We know that private companies offer bounties. Those of us who work for companies know that usually someone within the company who screws up is disadvantaged for that.

It seems obvious then that the Jews in Israel, if they want to not be under that constant death threat, need to leave somewhere else because those threats aren't going away. Either that or they need to conquer the whole region. Those are basically the only two real choices. If they do the latter, the only successful way in the long-term for stability would be to not have a government that's a de facto theocracy. The current situation is just a fucking mess, though.

In practice, given how seldom encryption is used in e-mail, that information isn't very well protected to begin with.
Nearly nobody outside off /. ers uses GPG, and S/MIME is only used in some peculiar corporate settings.
Thus nearly all e-mail are clear during the exchange.
Also not every single e-mail server uses encryption.
You might have setup your email client to use, e.g.: IMAPS and SMTP with STARTLS.
But there's no guarantee that you correspondent will have done similar (or uses a webmail over HTTPS).
And no guarantee either that the various machines along the chain between your SMTP server and your correspondent IMAP server will all use TLS/SSL secured links.
So a lot of what you've mention can be gather simply by looking at un-encrypted traffic, no need to hack anyone's computer.
Aside from the embarrassment of having an @aol.com email address, they don't support a lot of basic security tech like 2 factor auth and apparently don't give their support staff any security training, so should not be used for any purpose.
That's the major problem in my opiion :

In going through this self discovery process I have discovered that a lot of my problems, especially with my inadequacy, centers around the fact that I was repressing my homosexuality. Was forming Israel pragmatic? Did I say they *all* should leave? Do you think Israel was formed overnight and millions moved there in a few months? The point I'm making is that those who wish to move there to live in a Jewish state really shouldn't because it's not helping anyone. Those who are there who hate the violence and aren't beholden to a desire to have a Jewish state should leave. The hardliners are gong to stay regardless. It will take generations before a shift happens because most moderate Jews won't leave because they have sufficient roots there. It still is the most sensical thing to do.
As others point out for many Jews, Judaism is a culture, not a religion. They have and continue to practice their version of the culture wherever they live, so long as there's a couple dozen Jews in the area. Diasporia is the inevitable death* of a dying religion in a global community that can practice tolerance. I don't know if Christianity is next, but that'd be my guess.
* In a meaningful sense, where religion is passed down through the generation and assimilation into the cultural ideals of the area you live take precedent over your religious believes to the point that most adopt the area's religion/ideology. Hopefully, the process enriches the culture by adopting the good aspect of each new religion/culture that comes into the area. It's the people and the good ideas that matter, not the religion itself. Write down the history and the sacred text in books, and scholars can read about them if they want.

Yes. Europe and America both are moving towards secularism. It's not a one-generation thing. Even if Christianity "dies" in these areas, it doesn't necessarily mean Christianity will die in other areas. Even when it is dead, it doesn't mean there will be no follows. Look at Zoroastrianism. Look at people who still buy Furbies.

Japan was a monoculture until their efforts at ethnic purity almost led to their destruction in 1945.
Today, Japan is actually a pretty diverse place. You will find Africans, white people, Europeans and folks from all over Asia. They don't have the levels of immigration that most Western countries have, but they are by no means an ethnic state.
If you wanted to propose more ethnically pure states, Poland and Hungary might be more appropriate, but they're actually pretty diverse too.
As I've stated, ethnic purity is a death sentence for societies. Those places just don't exist any more, and that's a good thing.
