Chinese Scientists Develop Photonic Quantum Analog Computing Chip (sciencemag.org)
hackingbear writes from a report via Xinhua: Chinese scientists demonstrated the first two-dimensional quantum walks of single photons in real spatial space, which may provide a powerful platform to boost analog quantum computing. Scientists at Shanghai Jiaotong University reported in a paper published in the journal Science Advances a three-dimensional photonic chip with a scale up to 49x49 nodes, by using a technique called femtosecond direct writing. Universal quantum computers, under develop by IBM, Google, Alibaba and other American and Chinese rivals, are far from being feasible before error correction and full connections between the increasing numbers of qubits could be realized. In contrast, analog quantum computers, or quantum simulators, can be built in a straightforward way to solve practical problems directly without error correction, and potentially be able to beat the computational power of classical computers in the near future.

Yes, and then Japan caved in to US demand to appreciate the Yen, that caused Japan to go into a nearly 30-year (and counting) spiral of stagnation they still haven't gotten out of.

You are confused. While the improvement of Chinese scientific capability may result in leadership positions in many areas, China is not yet there. You confuse exploiting cheap and captive labor to create a manufacturing position with technological and scientific leadership. You also haven't really looked at some things you mention.
Intel actually manufactures and definitely develops outside of China, so actually looking at the innards of a computer reveals that Taiwanese design of motherboards does not in any way imply Chinese domination of computer science. The actual indicator of future Chinese dominance in computer science is the excellence of their young programmers.
Chem engineering. Do you even know what this is? Sure blow molded plastic is an area where China has demonstrated capability, but to think this means they have leadership in chem engineering and the resulting implications for materials development shows a real lack of understanding of what is happening in the world today. The Chinese are nowhere near the lead in materials development or chemical engineering. Want a cheap blow molded plastic item then China is the place to go.
Decision science. Well China is growing and they have brilliantly analyzed their situation and developed plans to improve their situation. But the term "decision science" just seems a programmer's ignorance of the various means of assessment in engineering as they attempt to sell the idea that they will write apps to help with economic assessment. Start talking decision science with the big goys and they will have a chuckle. Millennials do try but it would help if they got up to speed in fields before they try to improve things.
Having a population capable in applied math is good but does not constitute leadership in the development of mathematics.

Again you confuse the impressive exploitation of Chinese workers and supply chain development with scientific and technological capability. The Chinese simply do not lead in materials science. they barely have a presence. Screens and batteries are great examples. Neither were developed in China. The rest of the world just saw a way to screw over their own populace by collaborating with Chinese slavers. Now some leaders are beginning to see the problems that result from those past decisions.
I WILL give you that continued leadership in manufacturing will likely lead to future dominance in certain fields. After all, that is what happenned elsewhere in the past. But China just isn't there yet. We may be surprised how fast leadership happens in some fields though.
