Now Even Russian Lawmakers Want a Piece of Mark Zuckerberg (qz.com)

PolygamousRanchKid shares a report from Quartz: In an ironic twist in the saga of Facebook's troubles, Russian lawmakers have declared that they, too, would like to question Mark Zuckerberg. According to the Moscow Times, senator Anton Belyakov yesterday offered to invite the Facebook CEO to address the upper chamber of the Russian parliament. "After all, he spoke about information security, not giving access to personal data, preventing the dissemination of harmful content," Belyakov reportedly said, referring to Zuckerberg's meetings with the U.S. Congress and European Parliament. Another reason for those meetings was to discuss whether the social network facilitated Russian meddling in foreign elections.

The U.S. company is in trouble with Russian authorities for disobeying a 2015 law that requires it to store the data of Russian citizens on the country's soil. In April, the state communications watchdog threatened that if Facebook didn't comply, it would face the same fate as LinkedIn, which was banned in the country last year. Much to the chagrin of UK politicians, he (Zuckerberg) has not agreed to multiple calls, and even a mild threat, to testify in front of a UK parliamentary committee.

    That Facebook is too big to care about the Russian requirement, and that it is effectively calling Russia's bluff by realising that too many Russians 'depend' on Facebook and the act of blocking it would be hugely unpopular. To some extent all this is true with the UK too; it is so ingrained that most action against it would be deeply unpopular.

    In short, Facebook doesn't really need Russia and doesn't really care what it's legislators think. It's perhaps slightly different matter with the EU, which is a more serious source of revenue.

    In any event, Zuckerberg turning up to answer questions on Facebook operations is just theatre. Whilst I'm sure he has an some overview, many of the questions which parliaments want answered are technical and much better answered by their Facebooks legal department after they have presumably gone round and asked the right people in the company.

      And why should anyone care what Russia does? They are on their way to becoming a third world country with a nuclear arsenal. Global power is not about military strength. It is all about the strength of your economy. The state of California has a higher GDP than Russia. Compared against the US and Chinese economies they cannot compete in any sector. Russia's oligarchs are being specifically targeted by US sanctions and are in a bit of panic. Those same sanctions give a green light to the US government to seize their assets.

      Trump has hammered Russia every time the opportunity arises. Deporting diplomatic staff, selling offensive weapon to Ukraine, added new economic sanctions and beefed up the existing sanctions, confiscated Russia real estate, and worst of all the President seems to be ignoring Russia except to add more sanctions. If Russia wanted Trump to win the election then the FSB has made a monumental mistake. The US government investigations are doing what Russia tried to do by tearing apart the US landscape. So far the investigations have made it perfectly clear that if you talk or meet with any Russian you are guilty of treason. All the formal charges coming out of the investigations have nothing to do with Russia interfering with the election.

      Facebook is not that important in Russia, certainly not as much as in Europe or NA. They have only about 35% of the market penetration compared to almost almost 61% of VKontakte (source: https://www.statista.com/stati...) so they can be reasonably blocked without massive issues. I also expect that most of those seriously affected would be outside Putin's power base.

      Thailand one isp blocked facebook for an afternoon by "accident" (they were supposed to block a single page within facebook but it doesn't work that way...). a shitstorm ensued. sure, you can block elections indefinitely but you better not touch something people actually use or they might start asking about those elections....

      people use fb for messaging and stuff..and to talk shit about the goverment.

      sure.. uh.. they could use eh let's say whatsapp for messaging. or linked in. but whats so different about those?

      in russias case though, kinda surprised they haven't done it already. it's not like they give a fuck and people are talking shit about putin on facebook. russian people are talking shit about putin on facebook more specifically. anonymously no less.

      sure, if you use a bunch of other services that do the same things facebook does combined then by all means it is pointless. but shit if I can get all the people from FB moved to some other messaging(public messages are messages still) platform.

      The last part is key, and it is why every person who minimized, or said it is all fake news, or just didn't care because the interference benefited them is a traitor to the country, even if not by the official definition. It is still a betrayal of all the country is supposed to stand for.

      I also put those who think as long as their side is pissing off the other side then its all good in the same category. Fox news is definitely in the category. There is a difference between advocacy and propaganda, and while foreign propaganda is even worse, it is all vile and should be condemned for what it is.

      After propaganda I'd toss in hypocrisy. The phrase it is okay if a republican does it, seems to be the rule of the day. They advocate for strict rule of law _only_ when it benefits them, and at least lately, shit all over it when it doesn't. Hillary was completely unqualified because she was reckless with email, but Donald Trump obstructs justice blatantly including throwing out various obvious signals that "it is okay to break the law in certain ways, like his people are apparently guilty of, if your a republican, cause he will fix it." This is insane. Hell the only reason he sort of threw in the corrupt ex-governor of Illinois is because he thought his crime of trying to sell a senate seat was nothing, and maybe because it was Obama's senate seat.

      Facebook is, apparently, at least trying, which is more than our government is doing. I say ignore Russia. Keep everyone's personal information secure, and if you are kicked out, then you are. It is better than compromising. Politicians should learn the same lesson. Do the right thing even if it costs you an election. That is your job. They are supposed to be a layer to separate us from mob rule, but they don't act like even that, and what is worst is they only represent their political party generally these days, since getting primaried is a greater threat usually than the actual elections.

      If Russia wants to blow up the US even more than they already have, a good troll would be to give Zuckerberg the current equivalent of "Hero of the Soviet Union" for furthering Russia's goals in the 2016 election. They're already going to lose Facebook as an influence vector-with the changes Facebook is doing it will be nowhere near as effective at best-so might as well get out of it what they can. The furor in the media(both mainstream and alt-right) alone would be worth it for Russia, and it might even damage Facebook enough to hurt the US economy.

      Only if there's a strong chance it'd impact other organizations. Enron's collapse wasn't the collapse of the economy, despite also being a huge organization (albeit having only about 15% of the market cap of Facebook unadjusted for inflation - but I suspect way more jobs were impacted.)

      Facebook is probably overall a leech on productivity across the country, so I suspect in the longer term it would help the US economy overall for it to completely collapse.

      Nope. Interference doesn't have to be complete and total, most propaganda techniques involve a slow drip feed over time. When you're in for the long game, a 1% swing in opinion is enough to make a difference (for example the 2016 election was decided by less than 100000 votes ( 0.1%), the 2000 election was less than 1000 votes). Manipulation is thing, and the Internet is the perfect tool for allowing foreign powers to interfere in domestic politics, so it would be foolish to just pretend it isn't possible.

      So we shouldn't prosecute drug dealers for the same reasons? I'm being deliberately obtuse here because one of my pet hates is how big business gets away with a lot because of fear of economic impact but the same rules don't apply to the narcotics trade. Consistency would be good.

      Some would probably want to chop just his head, specifically cut his face, so they could make their own "Facebook" but clearly this would be wrong.

      However, to be fair, I think Fuckerberg's body should be chopped up evenly into little tiny chunks, so that every Russian lawmaker can each share in having their own equal "piece."

      I don't think we should worry where or calculate how many cuts need to be made, as his entire body could just be placed into a giant meat grinder and the resulting zuckgoo deposited on a glass blood slide for equal and fair distribution.

    Mark Zuckerberg can only blame himself for this mess. What exactly did he think would happen when you start messing with people's privacy? Unfortunately Facebook never bothered to address many of these issues when developing their apps or how third parties would see Facebook as a gold mine for a means of accessing personal data. Of course Zuckerberg knew of this potential being the guy photographed with his notebook having its camera and mic covered with tape. Even Zuckerberg didn't trust his own creation to protect his privacy.

    Inviting Zuckerberg to bore him with toothless pointless questions and then have a selfie with him. The EU crew were a bunch of undereducated sissies and whimps, no better than US congress. They should've grilled him and put him on the spot with regards to privacy.
