Tumblr Porn Vanishes Today

Earlier this month, Tumblr announced that it would be permanently banning adult content from its platform on December 17th. Well, that day has arrived and the social media site is now hiding all posts that are currently flagged as explicit, as well as posts that users are in the process of appealing. This includes media showing sex acts, exposed genitals, and "female-presenting" nipples. The Verge reports: In addition to what's already gone, more adult content is going to be flagged in coming weeks, Tumblr says, and it hopes that the automated tools will be more accurate at picking out what counts as explicit. In a blog post that went up today, Tumblr apologized to users: "We are sorry that this has not been an easy transition and we know we can do a better job of explaining what we're doing." It said the change would be a slow process that involves "flagging tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos."

Many users also criticized Tumblr's decision to consider "female-presenting nipples" as explicit, while male-presenting nipples were still okay. Some pointed out that in the case of non-binary, genderfluid, or trans individuals, it would be confusing where the line would be drawn on whose nipples would be considered explicit. In its blog post today, Tumblr has added the caveat, "yeah, we know you hate this term," but maintained the language and distinction. "We understand and agree that there have been too many wrongfully flagged posts since we announced the policy change," says Tumblr. But if users don't appeal their posts, then they're out of luck. That could also be a problem for popular older accounts, which may not have anyone monitoring them to appeal the overly aggressive moderation. Flagged content will be hidden, but not deleted, Tumblr emphasized. That will allow posts to be appealed even after they're removed from public view.
On a more positive note, Tumblr says that "all appeals will be sent to a real, live human who can make the appropriate call."

      No, it isn't hypocrisy.

Adult human males get a potent shot of dopamine when gazing upon female breasts of optimal nubility (this recalibrates itself depending on circumstance). It's the breast, not the nipple in particular. The nipple conventionally designates the sharp transition from hydrocodone to fentanyl; women expose portions of their breasts to signal availability, in a general sense, but are notoriously coy about exposing their actual nipples, which signals availability right here and right now.

The perky-nippled apparition of Ms Right Now drives men who have difficulty gaining feminine attention by virtue of being successful, or competent, or cultured, or debonair, into paroxysms of boorish behaviour, which easily tilts into degrading oneupmanship and outright misogyny.

The male nipple, lacking the underlying breast (did I have to explain this?) does not invoke this potent hormonal and cultural response.

This is the paradox of SJW vulgaris. First they dope their own biological cluestick with a Quaalude frappuccino, then they run around noisily "waking" other people up (typical Quaalude culture: users spend most of their time assuring each other that they're still fully in the "woke" condition, because their perceptual vigilance hangs by a knife edge).

Of course, the difficulties here are not to be underestimated. Men and woman both have primary genitals, for which there is not much of a double standard; men and women both have secondary sexual characteristics (men being hairier—and mostly terrified of hot wax—find themselves restricted to swimsuits exposing far less butt cheek); but men and women do not both have primary reproductive organs wagging or sagging over and above their genitals. Observe carefully, and you might see this too.

      SJW vulgaris: "Waaaa! Biology sucks."

Which is sad, because there's so legitimate crap out there to complain about. Indeed, it's a target-rich environment.

But no, job number one is to pretend that biology has no legitimate role in the human condition, because then the dialog would require nuance, and you couldn't just run around with your "woke" machine gun, spraying everything in sight like some solitary, embattled Doom marine (albeit, a solitary Doom marine who has mastered the fine art of laying down a backpedalling strafe-turn while dangling a fallback chainsaw from one side of his tool belt and a fallback rocket launcher from the other side, a feat of ultimate macho dexterity which throws serious shade on bounding over sewer gratings in stiletto heels, if you ask me).

Ultimately, I think a lot of it comes down to evolutionary reproductive biology. Sex is riskier for women because it can result in pregnancy, pregnancy is risky to the mother's health and survival, and caring for a child is burdensome. You kind of then want a partner who will hang in there and support you and your child rearing. Porn represents sexual promiscuity and promotes the idea that sex is free and women are disposable, basically the antithesis of what is valuable to women in terms of evolutionary reproductive biology.

Religion is a complex ritualization of these ideas, evolving in an era when the risks were more viscerally true (ie, people were living in a closer state of nature). Contemporary anti-porn gets to the same place, but uses the modern intellectual tools of feminism, psychology and literary criticism.

IMHO, I think a lot of contemporary anti-porn activism has been driven by lesbians. It's not that their intellectual analysis is wrong because of this, but I often wonder if they're actually driven by their own hostility to heterosexuality.

When I do, often someone comments, suprised that I actually read the other person's post and thought about their point of view, because that's unusual these days.
