Procter and Gamble Unveils New Device That Aims To Remove Signs of Aging (bbc.com)

In a video for the BBC, technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones uses Procter and Gamble's new device to maker him look younger. Called Opte, the device scans the skin and precisely applies tiny amounts of make-up to remove age spots, burst blood vessels and other blemishes. Opte has a camera in it that captures 200 frames per second and processes that data by looking at the difference of the color of your skin. It then sends it to a microprocessor and 120 thermal inkjet printers print the product directly on your skin. The company says it works with all skin colors via three different cartridges: light, medium, and dark. Procter and Gamble is planning to release the device in late 2019 or 2020.

      Better answer, I don't give one fuck about the whole old I look, I care about how old I feel, how my crappy carcase is handling the very uncomfortable ageing process. I'm already old, you come up with ways of making look young without actually feeling younger, as in physiologically feeling not emotional delusions and I will call you a fucking idiot. How well I recover from the knocks and bruises of life, how will my carcase handles my abuse of it, how well my shit works and if all that shit works, well, you know fucking what, I wont need a white out applicator for my face. Women are idiots, seriously and having a man pretend to behave like a women does not change that. Shit slashdot must be hard up for stories.

      Can it be more useful, as in come in many more colours, with indelible ink and voilà medium term tattoos, at least that would be fun. No matter what idiots think, painting you face does not make you younger in any way that counts.

      Ah, but looking younger *can* help you feel younger. ...younger women, younger men... whatever your taste. Or at least that seems to be the central, sometimes unspoken, marketing pillar for most of these kinds of products and surgeries.

    My wife wears a relative minimum of makeup, mostly a little eyeshadow and mascara. Point is, it was never a surprise to see what she looks like in the morning.

    But I'd be interested in what men's reaction was the first time they saw their wife or girlfriend without makeup. Today's style is pretty much flat monocolor. many women even hid their freckles (a mortal sin).

    She does have one friend who's husband has never seen her without. She puts it on in the morning, sleeps in it, then washes her face and goes through it again.

    Just curious - women hiding behind excessive makeup to me is the equivalent of a male wearing a braunschweiger in his pants.

      Someone will hack this thing and use it to, first, apply freckles - as many as you want. The Trill look could be a big thing. Next, they'll use it to apply patterns. Nazca lines. Circuitry. Hell, mix in some metallic powder and they could paint actual circuit traces on their fizzogs (That's a British colloquialism for "face, btw, and probably not what you thought).

      I still want to know if it washes off, or if you can use it like a 3D printer to slowly change your facial geometry and avoid the attention of security cameras.

      The creation of this "expectation" that women will always wear makeup in public - it's an astonishing triumph of a vile and misogynistic industry. It's a global multi-billion-dollar business that should be attracting worldwide protests, boycotts and pickets. And yet - women not only accept it, they all but enforce it on each other.

      And don't even get me started on cosmetic surgery.

      When the real reason for makeup is two different things. The first is that in various species, one or the other sex is more decorated, more beautiful. Sometimes, as with many birds, the male is the gaudy and more beautiful sex. In humans, it's the opposite. Women through the ages have enjoyed decorating themselves. Jewelry is one item, clothing is another. Looking at men's fashions they have changed very little over the last century. Women's fashions are all over the map.

      Makeup, which is not good or bad within itself, is another form of decorating. Where it becomes an issue is when women go overboard in order to hide their age. Just like this article. The reason they do this is that the male of the species is inherently attracted to women during their most fertile years. That's just the effects of evolution.

      So the idea that makeup is something forced on women by the evil patriarchy is both silly and very demeaning to women, casting them as so weak that they can't even make up their minds.

      They want to look younger than they are, and that's about it.

      I know many men, and the ones I have talked about women's makeup do not like it at all - they consider it dishonest, and some like myself, simply love freckles - covering them up is unforgivable. So either start understanding that not everything wemen do is men's fault, especially when men don't like what they are doing.

      Or you can get on over to Jezabel - you'll have agreement there.

      In Victorian times, women would give themselves "beauty marks" using silver nitrate. A dab on a swab, and light would darken the silver nitrate. The effect would last several weeks.

      I take that to be your opinion. Generally speaking, human males find human females beautiful/attractive and vice versa. Then, arguably, human male's beauty increases with age. Also, human males have manes which we tend to find see as a sign of beauty in other animals.

      I assume you're male. Can it be perhaps that you aren't that busy being pretty the whole day and that hence you don't appreciate your own beauty as much?

      IMHO one of the differences between humans and other species is that we are able to grow to reach a point where we find that inner beauty trumps external beauty. With age one realises that more people then one thinks are beautiful and life gets better.

      My wife, and my ex-wife, both would not put on make-up or dress up if we were going out for lunch or hanging around the house. "Going out with the girls" would send them into hours of preening preparation.

      Side note - some years ago at the local disco, a fellow injured his leg somehow. He was pretty drunk, and they took him to the local hospital as a precaution. When they took his pants off to get a look at his leg, they found he had a kielbasa stuck down there. He became a legend, though not the way he wanted to.

      The instant you realise that we are not that special and that we ARE just animals, mmm what a day that will be.

      Humans are indeed animals. With all the accoutrements that come with that fact. While we are capable of some pretty impressive thoughts, there are certain part of our existence that are based on how we evolved. Our tendencies toward aggression and how we kill each other without a thought. And the size of our "clans' and how we identify the "other". Sexual attractiveness as well. There are always outliers, as well as people who rebel and deny, but what humans find attractive is largely hard-wired.

      Which makes machinery like the one in the story here understandable. Occam's razor isn't always right, but the idea that many women try to look younger than their age because men find younger women more attractive is simple, and stands up to the nature of the human animal. Otherwise some weird complicated patriarchy forcing women to do this just doesn't make anywhere near as much sense. It also condemns women to a model of mental weakness, and substitutes new marching orders for the old ones.

      The folks who deny this nature of the species are channelling the same thing as young earth creationists. Denial of evolution.

      Fascinating stuff, and kind of flies in the face of the modern day dogma that men are shallow. We'll have to overlook the 80 percent below average math paradox.

      Yup, male. I've been told that I am "good looking". I fear that other than keeping in shape, my pursuits are more of the mental sort. So I sometimes come across as aloof to females. I am not a flirter. I do have an appreciation for feminine beauty, but not an appreciation for the mask-like makeup or especially the weird clown makeup many women hide behind.

      And truth is, I think that much of my "attractiveness" is more related to my shape, my demeanor, and let us be frank, my money. It is not unnatural for the female of the species to look for a stable male who can provide for her I'm not referring to the more pathological "gold digger" sort, but of a more sensible outlook.

    If the inkjet like product that is applied to the skin is found to cause cancer (and ultimately does), the product was aimed at older people! If the determination takes longer than 20 years, they may not get sued. Even if it takes less, it will be tied up in litigation for years, and the plaintiffs will all be gone. Either way, there is plenty of profit to be made off of vanity.
    P.S. We already know that it has been found by the state of California to cause cancer, because California has found nearly everything on the planet causes cancer!

    This product lets people use much less makeup while achieving a more natural look. It also helps people who don't know how to apply makeup well. I'm all for this if we see less of the painted-on face look.

    Additionally, cosmetics are regularly scrutinized for containing potentially dangerous chemicals, and this product reduces the amount needed significantly.

    The printer itself costs only $50 but the inkjet cartridges cost $1,500 each, & contain all 3 shades; light, medium, & dark. If one shade runs out the machine refuses to print anymore until you've replace the whole cartridge. Cartridges are digitally signed & can't be refilled & used again. Would actually be cheaper to hire a professional make-up artist, plus they'd make you look a lot better.

    BTW, since IT & therefore /. is predominantly male, does it have a drag-queen mode?

If they have fucking "anti-aging chemicals" why bother with the printer?     Because otherwise, it's just another makeup scam... making people think that just by very superficially *looking* younger, you could somehow supposedly feel any younger than you actually are, or enjoy the kind of life you had when you were younger.

    Because that is what would be important in the fight against aging... not purely exterior shit like age spots or what have you.

    Got to admit this is an interesting idea, but it's not doing anything more than lightly applying some colouring to cover a blemish. Something you could do with the tip of a finger and some pan-stick.

    I also expect when these things appear on the market, that the cost of the device and/or the filler will be eye watering. And that when self applied by a person, or in natural light looks less convincing than it might on video.

    Similar here except that my wife wears no makeup at all most of the time. She has little time and no real interest in painting her face for vanity and she's allergic and/or sensitive to a lot of that stuff anyway. I think she's beautiful with or without makeup so she doesn't have to wear it on my account. If I don't find her attractive in her natural state, no amount of makeup is really going to fix that.

    But I'd be interested in what men's reaction was the first time they saw their wife or girlfriend without makeup.

    If someone is surprised what their lady looks like without makeup then they are involved with a very vain and/or very insecure person. Maybe things are different where you live but most of the women I interact with regularly wear little to no makeup as a routine matter and I've seen all of them without frequently. Why would you want to be involved with someone that concerned with hiding their actual appearance the majority of the time? I like a pretty face as much as the next person but if you aren't reasonably attractive to begin with, no amount of face paint is going to fool anyone. If someone can actually tell that someone is wearing makeup then it is either badly applied and/or excessive - usually both in my experience. It's like guys wearing a hair piece to hide balding and then thinking nobody can tell.

    In my case it was actually more of surprise to me the first I saw my wife IN makeup.

    She does have one friend who's husband has never seen her without. She puts it on in the morning, sleeps in it, then washes her face and goes through it again.

    Wow. That person seems severely insecure and very likely her husband is contributing to the problem either intentionally or unintentionally. Nothing wrong with wearing makeup just like there is nothing wrong with dressing up nicely. Appearances do matter and taking the time to show that you care about your appearance is reasonable. There comes a point however when it tips from concern over appearance into insecurity and/or vanity. This person seems to have left that line pretty far behind them.

    Strawman. I don't think very many people think that at all. Few would argue that appearance doesn't matter or that makeup is bad as a general proposition. It's a more complicated issue than that. Mostly it isn't really a problem but like anything it sometimes becomes one. Women unquestionably are subjected to unreasonable expectations regarding their appearance and excessive use of makeup is often a symptom of this broader underlying problem. No/some makeup is fine. Lots of makeup and/or excessively routine use should raise some eyebrows.

    I know many men, and the ones I have talked about women's makeup do not like it at all - they consider it dishonest, and some like myself, simply love freckles - covering them up is unforgivable.

    If they think SOME makeup is dishonest then ask them if they are willing to go on their next date dressed in dirty wrinkled clothes and smelly because that is basically the same argument. Social conventions matter and makeup is one of them. It's just about intent and degree. Few reasonable men mind a sensible amount of makeup and enhancing one's appearance is far from dishonest. Like most things it isn't a problem until it is taken to excess or done for the wrong reasons.

    For the record I agree on freckles. I find them adorable too.

      Who's pretending? Most of this social pressure is not coming from men however. Other than when funning around, the major purpose of normal makeup is to make a woman look younger. There is a subset of women who wear makeup in ways that are not attractive to most men - but that is another form of a mask.

      But why would a woman want to look younger than she is? Oh - because men find younger looking women more attractive, of course.

      But let's ask these men if they are attracted to a woman who is young, or one who is purposefully presenting deception about her age.

      There are differences between wanting to look nice, and intentional deceit - which eventually ends up with the "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" look.

      I personally wash my hands of this nonsense that I'm somehow responsible for people feeling shamed about their body.
