Police Officers In Berlin Had To Break Up Fight Between Supporters of Two Rival YouTubers (bbc.com)

More than 100 police officers were deployed to break up a mass brawl reportedly organized by two rival YouTube stars in Berlin. The BBC reports: The fight broke out on Thursday evening on Alexanderplatz square in the German capital, police said, adding that nine people were arrested. More than 400 people had gathered after two social media influencers reportedly urged their fans to join a face-off. As tensions escalated, a large melee involving around 50 people erupted. Officers used pepper spray and tear gas after attempts to disperse the crowds with loudspeakers failed. As police intervened, clashes spilled over in a nearby subway, where rocks picked up from railway lines were reportedly thrown. The YouTubers who reportedly started this mess are named "Thatsbekir" and "Bahar Al Amood," both of which denied that they were at fault for the brawl in social media posts.

      Depends on your definition of European. Both of the YouTubers are middle eastern in origin (a Turk and an Arab) so it looks like that whole "bring in 1 million refugees" plan has succeeded in enriching Germany with some foreign culture.

      My father in-law works with juvenile criminality.
      Half of Turks are technically European. Slavs like Albanians are European. And those are the largest ethnic groups besides that act up more often than Germans from what he tells me. And the latter have also become a problem lately. In a couple of years, if our politicians don't some address and try to solve the issues nationalists have with immigrants and refugees, things will only get worse.
      There also tend to be tensions between Turks and Greeks or Turks and Kurds. Of course with juveniles involved things get as irrational as they can get with sober people.

      You may see that I mentioned Turks quite often here. That's because they're the largest ethnic groups of non-Germans in Germany. So naturally if you're looking at the total number of incidents by ethnicity and exclude ethnic Germans, they're most likely on top.
      They are large enough to have their own subculture that does not need to integrate into German culture to be able to sustain itself. A good part of them are also fuelled by demagogy from the Turkish president, to whom they still feel a strong allegiance, despite having lived in Germany all their life, benefiting from the German social systems and so forth.

      Of course this is generalizing. The individual Turk may be well integrated. They may contribute much more than any one of those dumbass neo-nazis who think they're inherited some God given rights just because they were born to German parents. But you know, the statistics from the police and the strong support for their fascist Turkish president don't lie. There are large enough subgroups that are problematic.

      What's interesting is how well some immigrants integrate and how well some don't. In the US, I've run into a lot of 2nd generation Latinos that are so suburban middle class you'd think they were immigrants from the 19th century, not the 1970s.

      It might have something to do with racial appearance, a lot of Latinos are very Caucasian in terms of racial appearance and can often be confused with Italians, Greeks or Jews. But I think some of it is cultural -- for all the anti-Mexican hysteria, Mexican culture more or less is European.

      My rather simple hypothesis: The lack of exposure to and interaction with the broader American culture makes it difficult for them to break out of their own sub culture. Ethnicity in itself may play some role, but I believe the culture you grow up in and learn from is a more important factor in most cases.
      If I were to move to the US I'd try to get a place that is not among many other Germans or Russian. Ideally a place where there is a large quantity of the dominant culture is present. It's the best way to learn how I can work and function in that culture.

      You are right. Slavs are still mostly European though; as are Balkan people.
      The general problem maybe is how "European culture" can be defined. Unlike in the US, who was multicultural from the get go and had to establish its own resident culture first, cultures in Europe have their roots going hundreds of years back into the past. There also were plenty of wars, where almost every major power seems to have gotten their turn at some point and pissing everyone else off in doing so.

      I grew up in Detroit, where we had Hamtramck, which had the largest Polish population of any city outside Poland. We had Greektown, we and other enclaves of German, Arab, and other groups. While they often worked or went to school together, they went home to their little clique neighborhoods.

      When I moved to the DC area, I saw a much more integrated city, but to this day we have pockets of Korean, Vietnamese and a few other ethnicities.

      Americans that I worked with in Germany and Korea did the same...while we would often partake in some of the national festivities, we'd normally stick together.

      I think you can only assimilate just so much and then you want some of what you grew up with, which is why you see that difference with the 2nd generations.

State and local prosecutors have reportedly prepped new charges that can’t be erased with a presidential pardon. And a slate of sealed indictments sit in the Washington, D.C., federal courthouse, raising the prospect that some in Trump’s circle may have already been indicted and just don’t know it.

    “If anyone in Trump world is breathing easy right now, I’d say they are very foolish,” said Shanlon Wu, a defense lawyer who previously represented Trump’s former deputy campaign chairman, Rick Gates. “Even if Mueller’s report were to appear and didn’t implicate the president, all these other criminal investigations will continue. That’s not going to be the magic bullet that solves everything. I’d be very concerned if I was a lawyer or a potential target in that world right now.”

    This makes it sound like thia is an unusual thing. In reality, this is just another weekend for rivaling "gangs" (of mostly dumb kids who junt wanna feel comeradery and be cool) in any big German city.
    We had this 20 years ago. My buddy used to film them. (In our case it was "our school VS enemy school".)

    So yeah, very lame, and pathetic individuals, but it seems that a certain subset of humans need this, to find their place in society.

    Its tempting to think that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube are the cause of every craze-slash-crazy-persons-event happening. Who I blame is actual Mainstream Media who for many decades have deliberately - and profitably - ignored and censored what real, ordinary people have to go through in the real world. All in the name of social cohesion and economic stability. Of course new outlets like Facebook and Youtube are going to turn into "Volcanos of Crazy" - Hollywood and MSM content has become unwatchably formulaic, so people have taken to following Twitterati, Youtubers and so on instead. There was a street brawl in Germany? Oh noes! That's so much worse than Millions of people having to live with censored news for many decades. In the West, no less, not in Russia or China! Until the MSM fixes itself - or better changes hands - I'm guessing that we'll wake up to more "internet-driven crazyness" in the next years. It gives me hope that today's young seem to chose their own content online, rather than becoming Television and Radio zombies like previous generations have.

      Exactly. The MSM rhetoric is perfectly calibrated to be soft enough to prevent activism or rioting, yet hard enough to ensure the people stay divided and easy to manipulate in their voting patterns. Someone once said here that the Democratic and Republican parties are just taking turns raping the USA, and I posit that that's an intentionally worked-out agreement rather than an accident. Notice, for example, how few laws get rolled back once the other party is in power, even controversial ones whose rollback is a plank of someone's campaign.

      The above is US-centric because that's what I know, although I also know the BBC's "exactly two sides to an issue" tendency helps enforce that.

      No, I blame US politicians for enacting laws that create class-warfare under the guise of 'protecting the people' and laws that unilaterally protect corporations and laws that encourage fund-raising in politics. Also, for allowing main-stream Media to spread fake news and blatant falsehoods and inciting 'fight it with guns' mentality. Lastly, for not holding their federal, state and municipal departments accountable for their ineffectiveness. In fact, several of the former failures wouldn't happen if politicians were routinely sacked for not meeting the policy goals of their party.

      But I'm reminded that 'people get the government they deserve' and 'government gets the criminals they deserve', so ultimately, this is a failure of voters to perform critical thinking and reasoned judgement. Until voters demand more of themselves, they will be unable to demand (or elect) integrity in politics.

      What the US needs, is a voice demanding politicians be elected according to the commitments they make to the people, not better gut-wrenching attack adverts and blame-shifting propaganda.

      While I like poking fun at YT morons, in this case it's just a case of "standard thing happens + Internet = Breaking News!!!!". There have been youth gangs in Berlin beating each other up about nothing much for at least a hundred years, and in fact it's calmed down a lot since the 1920s when there were literal street battles with people being killed in the fighting, e.g. KPD vs. SA. So this is business as usual, but only the addition of the Internet makes it newsworthy.

      Social media has a lot to answer for, but in this case it's a red herring.

      5 Insightful my ass. Grow the fuck up: There's no "global conspiracy" by what you call the "MSM" to control the population for some sort of social and economic order. There's one thing, and one thing only that motivates mainstream media: Their own personal profit. Period.

      Hollywood and mainstream media are businesses. They produce the content they do for one reason only: Because it's what we demand. We don't give a flying fuck about what "real, ordinary people have to go through in the real world". We want gore, we want drama, we want sex and we want sports. And that's exactly what they give us, because that's how you make money doing business.

      Everybody's always trying to find someone else to put the blame on for the world going to shit: The jews, the muslims, the immigrants, the "elite", the media, ect etc. They're all too cowardly to look in the mirror. We are a ruined, degenerate species. And if we don't wise up, gather the courage to look at ourselves for what we truly are, and collectively get our shit together real soon, we'll end-up like all other mistakes of nature ended-up: Extinct.

      If the goal is to make money, then how do you explain that the "MSM" are becoming less and less profitable? How do you explain that they are slowly replaced with alternative media? How do you explain that a generic YouTuber with almost no means and doing some generic political commentaries can get more views than news channels from the "MSM"?

      I live in Quebec. I'm on the right. There are no "MSM" here for me. No "MSM" wants to sell me anything. They view me either as an undesirable customer or, at best, as someone who must be manipulated into their ideology. One of the three important written media here (La Presse) now must rely on government subsidies to survive. Instead of changing their editorial content in order to offer what people want, they decided to stay true to their ideology and risk bankruptcy.

      The reality is the "MSM", like many parts of Western societies, have become infected with this leftist ideologies. They now care more about promoting their "moral values" than making money, or even telling the truth. The "get woke, go broke" certainly applies to the "MSM".

      Anyway, your part about looking in the mirror was funny. How about you start doing it yourself?

      Your premise is backwards. Newspapers don't profit from social cohesion and economic stability, newspapers profit from outrage and fear. This is where we get the term "yellow journalism," and the Spanish American war is sometimes credited as a war we fought for the sake of newspaper profits. This is debated, but the newspapers did profit from that war.

      Let's consider: where did you get the idea that the "Mainstream Media" was doing this? Was it from the "non-Mainstream Media"? They are also out to make a profit, and like everyone else they profit from outrage and fear.

      The mainstream media is not motivated by profit. Most of them don't make money any more. Now they are the mouthpieces of billionaires like Carlos Slim (New York Times) or Jeff Bezos (Washington Post). It turns out what "we" demand is incisive, detailed content that takes time to examine the issues. Have you seen the Joe Rogan show? The segments are 2-3 hours and he has millions of viewers. His recent triumph was with Tim Pool tearing the Twitter CEO and his media lapdog a new asshole for their obvious political bias. It was awesome. And your idea that our political and media establishment don't aspire to a world order is utterly false.

      I think your criticisms about the "content" of the press being "unwatchably formulaic" speaks volumes as to what you expect to get out of it - entertainment. That is the more fundamental problem at play here. People that feel a need to be entertained every minute of every day. That is the real rot the "idiot box" causes, and it's 20x as worse when some random douche on YouTube is doing it. The solutions proposed to a respectable and accountable press are invariably worse.

      Or, maybe you were talking about American Idol, in which case my apologies.

      Oh, boy, do you miss the point.

      The "Mainstream Media" isn't a formal organization or union - it's the informal community of professional media folks that move from company to company, bringing the same ideas and processes to each one.
      There is no "conspiracy" because there doesn't need to be one. When everyone thinks the same, then everyone will naturally reach similar conclusions without any formal plotting. And 'journalism school' is dominated more than 90% by one viewpoint. They teach only one viewpoint. They graduate students that can repeat that viewpoint back to them. Media companies hire people that media companies feel comfortable with; like-minded folk from J-schools that are trusted by the 'journalism' community.

      All this leads to a highly-incestuous group of people that almost all think and act the same. Colloquially, this is called "the mainstream media".

      Newspapers are not a good example. As Gentzkow and Shapiro have shown in several studies, newspapers are driven by their local market: Papers in Leftist areas tilt Left, while papers in right-wing areas tilt Right.

      Television, however, is a different matter. The news networks are national, and target different populations than local papers. See the years of research by Peake, or Martin, or Yurukoglu, or Milyo, or Gasper, or Groeling.

      Can I ask what's intrinsically bad about a 'world order'? I'm left leaning but more of an anarchist, so favour smaller 'socialist' governments. But wouldn't a world order mean you could raise the bar across the world? Wouldn't it more than likely be controlled by or at least favor America, and therefore US right wing thinking? Why don't the right wing embrace the idea and therefore own it and control it? Is it an intrinsic fear of change, or just that it's a nice bogey man?

      This is a genuine question - I have never actually read what the actual issues are. I'm not even sure there are any genuine issues beyond being a convenient dog whistle.
