Im feeling kind of depressed now that you guys seem to think it is a joke.. Ive just been playing with Eterm and transparent backgrounds etc a few days ago and I was hoping I could find some cool ls themes that would look good and be visible on certain backdrops.
I can't believe you folks are talking about ls.themes.org when I'VE got a PENGUIN coming to me. Don't you people understand the gravity of this? A penguin! (And a mug!)

Somewhere between my brain and my hands "Linus" almost always becomes "Linux". Seems to work like that between the eyes and brain quite a bit also. ;)
Having just struggled with SAMBA config files and manpages for SIX HOURS(!!!) to get it to do some very basic things, I would have to say that dotfiles.com is very handy.

Hey Rob or whoever, be sure to review the O'Reilly Samba book when it comes out next month. I will probably buy it anyway due to my O'Reilly-book-buying reflex, but don't worry about me.
I'd pay ~us$100 or so, maybe ~us$150 for a lego case. Of course It would have to be not glued so I could play with^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^? reconfigure it.
oh yeh, and all the gfx in litestep seem to be stolen from linux wm's anyway, and they don't look as good IMHO.
BTW, ls.themes.org is great... i love it. *grin*

Be + Transmeta + Nuon = My Brain Exploding
Problem here is that @home is distrubuted differently across the U.S. Hence, is anyone successfully connected with the Comcast installation? If so I have a few questions. For Example: I thought I had a IP static address but it's set as automatic (PnP?) under the card properties; second, with their custom login for mail - is it back to Win 95 everytime it's mail time?
Perhaps the focus is different, but the site itself looks like a tacky rip-off.

from what I see there, the only samba related file there is the default oen that comes with the samba package itself... but really, is smb.conf that much of a struggle? plopping in domains and hosts, and a struct for dir's/printer's? it shouldnt take you longer than 30 minutes for an avg network
Why can't you compile your own color ls for IRIX? It uses ANSI-compatible colors, I believe so even in a monochrome term (like vanilla xterm or wterm) you'll get bold (bold yellow in wterm's case) at least.
As for Eterm, transparent terms are not really transparent, they just grab the background image and display a cropped version in the proper alignment in the Eterm (in other words, you won't see other windows through your Eterm). But to do this, Eterm has to know what the background image is and how it is aligned. If you're not using Englightenment, you have to set your background with the command Esetroot, which should have been included with Eterm. I've found Esetroot to be very slow in putting the image up (compared to xv), and the coolness of transparent terms soon runs down, especially when you have different backgrounds (I have a loop that changes my background to another one randomly every hour) in which some conflict with your character colors.

i almost thought they were refering to LiteStep.
Then i was wondering why they would be making fun of LiteStep, when Litestep has some wicked themes. And can look better than almost any window manager with the exception of enlightenment. Yeah, Yeah LiteStep is not a Window Manager, its a shell for windows, and it was based of AfterStep (i think) but has grown beyond that...
So maybe there should be an ls.theme.org
i know a few guys whold be glad to run it..

its intresting how you can call something that you do not understand a hack. Anyway, windows may be unstable so and so amy be litestep, but considering thats it only at 0.24.4 i should expect anything from it. I don't here folks complaining about gnome or gtk apps crashing, which they do. Maybe the guy who installed litestep was a total boob, hey just as linux ain't for everybody so is litestep.

This post really doesn't belong here, but anyway. I was looking for a good Linux help forum on the web. Here at work the sysadmin won't just let everyone jump throught the firewall, and that's been a bit of a problem for me trying to use *irc. Although I am new, I have figured several things out just playing around :) Yesterday was my first (failed) attempt at compiling and installing a new kernel. But luckly I manged to restor my old one (The network would not work with 2.2.0). But any help/info/links are appreciated.

Thanks for the link! I feel motivated once again to continue my work. Hmm, I've got this idea in the back of my head... I want to support a weird audio adapter typically used in Microchannel machines. The only driver interface that will be easy runs in DOS. I'm thinking about running a "stub" program in DOSEMU and then having my Linux audio device driver talk to that...

Heh, dz your gonna get buried in here. Lets just say selling Litestep to /. folks is like selling ice cubes to the eskimo's.
I've used Litestep on my M$ boxes for the last nine months, and the current version is pretty stable. It's not Linux, but it's a reasonable step in the right direction from stock windows, esp. if you don't have a choice (at work etc.).
