It is hard for me to imagine a more pervasive set of public transit systems than I encountered in China, from the undergrounds (in place and still being build in multiple urban areas), high speed trains, maglev, trams, buses, etc. Nonetheless, in the first tier city I was in (Shanghai) the streets and highways are in heavy use despite the options. And being a pedestrian can be a dangerous option where Mopeds drivers think (and act) as if they own the pavement where they crush any incursion by bipedals with impunity... that includes a subset of the bicyclists acting in like fashion. Moreover, the level of risk taking and incompetence seen on the urban highways was breath taking. I soon lost the illusion I could successfully drive on the limited access highways and I knew immediately I could never meet the requirements to navigate the surface streets.
So what I have seen the options are there, but during high usage periods one travels on public transit packed as tight as a sardine in its final trip. I did that only once and it was just too much to repeat despite it not even being a rush hour. Instead it was during the end of Summer national holiday week. Regarding other forms of travel were either very nice, e.g. high speed trains (including maglev - but less than 15 miles in the entire country), domestic air competent (on worse in the States on longer trips), etc. were all passable or much better than I have been on elsewhere. But for some it does not suffice when the illusion here [States] the myth of the "Open Road" carries too great a weight. It also might be perceived status of having one's own vehicle despite the astronomical fees and other limitations that makes driving the choice of many that just can no matter what the costs are.
So your solution seems to be missing too many factors to be the entire fix needed.
Last I heard the CEO profits nicely with $1M plus USD while paying less than minimum wage due to employing handicapped individuals. Goodwill as an entity seems profitable venture while being disguised (legally) as a charity. Really is this the best partner Google could enlist?
Goodwill is a dubious partner even if the goal is laudatory.
combination of [true] speed or reliability. As I told the shill at my door once, I would switch to Verizon FiOS in a heartbeat if it became available. Now if Comcast were the only option (in the future) I would consider dropping an internet connection.
The speed tests I have run contradict those in the summary. Tests run at 3am on a weekday do not make Comcast the winner.
I have not eaten pizza for quite a period, however, just in the past several weeks I have been introduced to pizza with tastes markedly superior found at the even good local pizzerias I patronized in the past.
The first was a pretty small chain that had a crust that had a taste and consistency new to me. Moreover, I found it superior to previous experience. The store was just out side of D.C. and the pricing was in the premium range for a slice. But it was worth it [perhaps unfairly assessed, in neither case did I pick up the bill].
The second might not be a chain or franchise operation at all, but it was even better than the one described above. Here one walks through a line with an individual preparing a custom created pizza to your choices of flour, sauce, cheese, toppings: vegetables and meats along with a selection of final touches after baking. For those skewing to the mass market versions, robotic pizzas will suffice and probably win on price. However, for those with a more functional palate higher quality particularly when combined with personal choice will win out. Nonetheless, the latter will sadly be the smaller market albeit perhaps the more profitable. [This time I paid the entire bill and I look forward to a return visit.]
I wonder, we may not have any other choice than to rush towards an autonomous AI entity. Otherwise with our patently psychotic tendencies for mass murder and destruction all other traces of humanity could potentially disappear. One need only look at our tepid response to too visible emergencies (other than our self serving fear) to the on going medical crisis (e.g. Ebola, drug resistant bacteria, self inflicted bad food / drugs...choices ) and climate change to perceive that AI could well arrive too late to destroy humanity.
Look how many supposed supporters of unbridled capitalism, opt to impose state rules making entry nearly impossible via compliant state legislative acts. Could, just by chance, your state allow sales only through dealerships? If so that might partially explain your not seeing them, I know it took a very long time before hybrids were common in this area.
Also could the implicit antipathy be due to its association with belief that climate change is both real and mostly due to human sources?
I am astounded of your ignorance of Americans, when I know you should be saying U.S.A.(ians).
However, you are to be excused, because we know we really are the only Americans that count.
Furthermore, we know the Earth is the Center of the Universe and the U.S. of A. acts as its bull's eye.
Moreover, we know that scientists are feeding us phony facts. Who cares if some third world contiries are flooded out - it's God's will or it would not happen.
Another fact, unlike the ignorance shown by all those not living in this World leading bastion of Freedom we knell to no one. We might bow a little to finance another war, but we are doing it for you and a bit of oil to lubricate our economy.
Finally, where else would you find the honesty of our political parties? We once had a party called the Know Nothings and we are proud of it and its a principle we stick to.
Now that should correct your ignorance.of us and the U.S. of A.
Agreed, the number I heard on CNBC was Tesla saying they would deliver 60K while the production rate would reach 100K* at the end of the year.
* Slightly below 100K, since the number quoted was 1,900 per week, which for the 52 weeks comes to 98.8K. This presumes no down time (weeks) or other unexpected production delays / stoppage due to unexpected causes.
NYC system has a 24 hour schedule, the last I heard.
I think even the London may operate more hours than does the Hong Kong system (the link I found on service hours for H.K. was imprecise, i.e. [approx.] early morning to late at night every day of the year], which at worse comes close to the London hours of service.
Both NYC and London systems are both near one hundred or more years older, which means they are more maintenance intensive. Moreover, the former (and presumably the latter) are comprised of an amalgam of irrationally constructed competing systems that have been only partially made a more rational whole by closures, by new construction and by attempts to connect lines.
I know this does not address the supposed A.I. aspect, but a system built much later has advantages in the tools they employ.
Would you care to show your numbers supporting your estimate?
Using 1,863 miles per charge and an average yearly milage of 15,000 I get only a fraction over 8 changes per year. That number is still to many if done at a dealership given the expense in time and currency.
To cite a Fox News site as you hurl the acusation that the other party is ignorant and needs to be educated implies you are the one with deficiencies that will not be remedied by any call to reason or logic. Only a true true believer can give Fox News as a source that delivers unvarished truth. Thus, cease with the name calling unless and until you are willing tol stand behind your words with a real identity, even then do not expect rapture to follow.
is it when these are impossible to retrieve by a site user?
It has been my experience that several science postings are invisible despite my knowing they existed whether using slashdot's miserable search or external tools, e.g. Google or even DuckDuckGo. Nothing near relevant is brought up for one article and the other only obtained derivate, later citings. [The first pertained to a periodic intensity from a star (did not read original article a the time) and the second the then new observation of micro bubble formation along the axis of the bursting of a larger bubble. The latter was discovered with high speed photography and was an unexpected phenomena. At the time I read the original article. It is the former that has eluded me on multiple tries.]
I have been extremely frustrated trying to go back to several old postings that would have been useful, but now are as good as being non-existent.
if successful it could make his tenure less secure. That is, from the CEO's perspective it is better to jettison a potentially successful project for which he will garner no credit and could potentially make his efforts seem weak in comparison. Too bad corporate ethics are never enforced, where only the top dog's needs are now met.
Perceptions play a major role, hence, to claim victory base upon the public's mass use of ubiquitous of Linux variants hidden in devices will not be perceived as a victorious. That is, when that Public is blissfully ignorant. Moreover, with ready cash in hand and hired help in all fields these victories could so easily be overturned. Premature claims of victory lead to humiliation.
I would suggest several tags be added to this story alone with arrogance and hubris. out-of-touch, unreality,...
HP not being a software powerhouse with years of success can at best seem to imply it might drop Windows on its PCs. That is, if it is not given a cash gift from some outside benefactor.
Even if it does not work it has lost nothing by allowing sales of its OS on a small fraction of the PCs it still sells, i.e. to those that do not insist on having those must have MS applications and games that run only on its OS. So, at worse, for MS it is bled a bit more than it might otherwise, however, if they buy off HP their cash flow from one of their few cash cows has been lessened.
For HP the risks are minimal either way, if their OS sells into the corporate market they lessen the clout of MS. Or if they are bought off, they never promised anything to their customers other than a tablet and some phones. However, their cash flow is enhanced or they can undersell some of the competition. Either way they gain.
You speak from experience, I would presume, or is it that you wish to monopolize all the pleasure for yourself and your ilk? However, from your description you are well versed in the techniques of extreme S&M, in that case I will gladly give it a pass.
Fine, but do you numbers include the necessary infrastructure costs (plus maintenance) of electrical distribution? Moreover, what of the skills required to safely and temporarily store radio active waste, which we still cannot deal with effectively in the so-called developed world? Local or distributed sources of power might appear less efficient from a global perspective, however, too often that view is skewed towards not including real, long term costs. Plus Uranium will become increasingly expensive were it used everywhere, as you suggest.
Please recalculate with more care. Also throw in the talent to build and maintain these power stations and clean up afterwards when they are obsolete.
I aborted my run in the former instance, because the measurement saw only a high burst speed that immediate degraded to piddling one, well below the supposed high rate being advertised. Little different this time, register and run with no real point to communicate. I will fore go this opportunity to help buttress spurious statistics in support of the status quo.
For example, Comcast has an initial burst speed in the range of 20 - 16 megabits per second. However, all to soon one passes a modestly set download quantity and the rate drops to its usual mediocre levels. I suspect, based upon my experience running a test, this fictional rate is seen as the base rate offered and published as such.

Perhaps it will be wiser than we have been.

You seem to have a better grasp on what makes business sense for a company that has been floundering, albeit with scads of cash.
So have your resume handy, if they do not call the Ballmer back.
If it's not the latter, Good Luck with your new endeavor.

I would have used different words expressing essentially the same sentiment.

Pipe dream.
We lack the budget to get there, otherwise we would. Be realistic, please.
