I wouldn't call iCab entirely useful as an everyday browser at this point--it has no CSS support at all, minimal JavaScript support, no DOM (hence the minimal JS)... although for pure HTML pages, it is the danged fastest thing I've ever seen. If they can get it up to standards, it'll be a real humdinger.

  2. Re:When will it show up in OEM systems? on Does ATi Have a GeForce 256 Killer? · · Score: 1

Well, Apple appears to have bought its own pet graphics-chip maker, so ATI's offerings might just be on their way out for our beloved fruity boxen. ;)
I can't blame them, either--the latest ATI cards have serious issues with lots of Macs. A casual scan through MacFixIt's news archives turn up scores of reported problems. The general consensus I've heard is that ATI's Mac drivers are a big load of rubbish.

I gotta warn anyone who isn't familiar with it that MacKiDo will make anyone who looks at it who isn't a die-hard Mac fanatic very very angry. It's not exactly a bastion of fair, unbiased reporting.

And I say this as a semi-die-hard Mac guy. It's nice to have a propaganda outlet or two to combat the spread of M$/Chipzilla FUD, but sometimes I think they go a little too far.

  4. Re:they were on tv on AMD to Build G4 CPUs? · · Score: 2

Apple didn't do anything to the processors themselves. What they did do was include a check for the PPC7400 in the latest version of the Blue&White G3 firmware, mostly (I've gathered) to make certain that no one jumped onto the market with a G4 upgrade before they announced their G4 machines. (There have also been some reports of power supply issues related to the B&W/G4 combination--apparently the blueberry boxen don't take so well to the G4's increased power requirements or somesuch.) This is a moot point, however, as at least one upgrade maker has already developed a firmware patch of their own to bypass Apple's block, as everyone knew would happen from the beginning anyway.

  5. Bleah on Bleem on Bleem's shipping-the exe that is · · Score: 1

At this point, I'd trust them as far as I could throw them. It wasn't Sony that kept delaying them--it was their own incompetence. Implementing a ridiculous key-CD copy protection system? In 1999? That's what made them miss their first ship date--when they put in the key disc code, everything else stopped working. Ha.

I feel sorry for them getting hassled at E3 by Sony reps, but in all other respects they deserve all the abuse they get.

Lord, I hate preannouncements with the emu scene. If they had just shut up until they had a product, and perhaps forgotten about the keydiscs, maybe they wouldn't be such a joke.

  6. Re:Good Black Equipt.? on Translucent PC Cases · · Score: 2

Well, good, easily-manufacturable black equipment. If I recall correctly, the original NeXT cubes were made of magnesium, which the black paint wouldn't stick to very well. The angles of the cube also had to be *exact* right angles, making it nigh-impossible to build easily--in fact, new machines had to be developed just to put the case together.

Thank God Jobs has stopped being *quite* so picky/megalomaniacal. ;)

  7. cast support on Apple Purchases Rights to MP3 Codec · · Score: 1

Actually, there is a streamer for the Mac, called MacAmp Antenna--it dumps the stream into a file, which can then be played by an external program. Despite its name, however, MacAmp is not the program to use to listen to these--its mp3 engines aren't quite up to snuff. For this reason, Antenna was banned from MacAmp servers (it's not good to show up the flaws in the program), so good luck finding it.

Froze up totally on Slashdot. ;b I'm glad that the idea of platform parity is still being pushed hard.

The browser situation here doesn't look too good to me. NS 4.5 is too big/slow/memory-hoggish, IE 4.5 isn't much but an excuse for MS to delay as long as possible on Mac 5.0, and the more ideological Mac users (like me) won't use it anyway.

iCab still isn't really usable for everyday work--it renders as fast as Seamonkey does (when I can get SM to work), but everything else is way too slow, as if all the non-rendering parts had been done in RealBasic. (Scrolling is especially ugly.)
