Star Wars Trailer #2
Zibalatz writes "The second Star Wars trailer will be appearing at Countdown to Star Wars today at around 4:00pm. There's more information on the second trailer and its non-web appearances on the site. I would strongly recommend anyone who can provide a mirror to do so. "
Update: 03/09 08:24 by CT : Delayed. Isn't that always the case?
I suspect their poor server got Slashdotted! *comf* server, R.I.P.
If there was one thing that would really really really stress test server #2, this would be it.
I cant wait to see these movies!!!
They're not there anymore. Oops.
TheMadTooter says....
This trailer is awesome. Got the sneak peak about five minutes ago.
Looks real good.
There is some info about the trailer being in theatres at
starwars.com
Nothing, about it being on the web though...
Also, it would seem that the Wing Commander thing is a myth...
The site says the ETA is late evening pacific standard time. So don't get your cookies in a knot just yet. Also the StarWars.com news sight says there is no promise that the trailer is running with wing commander.
...and will be for a long time probably. can someone PLEASE post a mirror site? please please please?
I hear that the trailer will be shown before the movie "Wing Commander" opening this Friday...
That's what I hear. You think The Waterboy did well at the Boxoffice?
"Look... we, as raving scifi fans, get to see The Second Trailer at the theatre! Oh... look... and there's some scifi movie attached to it, too! Bonus!"
I smell marketing. Call me a demographic: I also know where I (with family) will be Friday evening.
i want it, i want it, i want it.
:-)
somebody wants to trade?
"The new trailer will be placed into general release, running on a wide variety of films over the coming weeks. Contrary to speculation, it will not be attached to any particular film, including Wing Commander, and in fact may not even play with Wing Commander. ANNOUNCEMENT
MONDAY MAR 8 7:43PM ET
Contrary to what other sites have been posting, there will
be NO TRAILER B posted here, before STARWARS.COM
posts it, according to Lucasfilm's wishes. Even if,
hypothetically, we were to put up a version we got from,
say, Entertainment Tonight, I have been told that it
would still be against Lucasfilm's wishes, unless
starwars.com has it posted already. This information can
be confirmed on other star wars websites that Lucasfilm
also contacted, and I respect their wishes.
The big file that I am going to be putting out instead later
tonight is NOT Trailer B and in no way is it aimed against
Lucasfilm's wishes to keep the release of STAR WARS
material under their control. I have NOT said at any time
that it was Trailer B, other sites have just assumed that.
It is NOT moving STAR WARS FOOTAGE per se. However,
I can confirm that new pictures and the trailer WILL be
released the minute that the official site releases the
trailer.
The site was updated, and due to LucasArt's wishes, they're not going to release the trailer until after the offical release! Damn it!!!
after about 50 reloads i finally got on to see this message:

I don't have it yet... I opened up my site so it can be a mirror once someone gets a copy.
I routinely get up to 800KBps aggregate when serving files. I'm just trying to spread out the load a bit when the trailer does come out.
Blah Blah Blah Blah...Whatever LOOOOSSSERRRR
Couldn't resist....
AS IF counting down would have exclusive rights to the trailer and could release it before starwars.com. You guys are such a bunch of stupid bastards. I can't believe how obsessed everyone is about this damn movie, sure it will be cool and I'll go and watch it as soon as possible, but there is no need to refocus your meaning of life on it.
I think alot of people are gonna feel very empty and let down when they actually see the movie.. or then again they'll just start the obsession all over again with Star Wars 2.
sigh..
UhMMMM...BiTE mE, sHItHeAd
Hey PhiberKut!
I know you have menace2.mov.
Don't make it available on your site, instead,
upload it elsewhere and announce it here.
Much better that way.
:)
I think its interesting that countingdown.com says it will release the trailer the minute the offical site does(they mention that twice in their "announcment"). Could it be that they have the trailer, and have inside knowledge that SW.com will also be releasing the trailer tonight? Since they've hyped it up so much, more people will probably be hitting their site than LFL's. Just a theory.
Countingdown.com has no Trailer B.
It's a joke.
You'll see.
Don't post such obvious bullshit.
Thought I'd just express my disappointment.
No Kitty! My pot pie!!
With a wait this long, they must be running the video compression on their webserver box. ;)
Would be a good way to discourage impatience.
Hmmm...future anti-slashdot FUD?
With the incredible amount of hype surrounding
Episode 1, I was curious if all of the rabid
Star Wars fans out there think the movie will
be as good as everyone seem to think it will be.
The best thing about seeing the original Star
Wars trilogy as a kid was that I didn't know all
the plot details, characters, etc. that the WWW
makes it so easy to find out about these days.
Given the massive expectations surrounding this
movie, I find it hard to believe that hardcore
fans won't be dissappointed. I'm a little bit
concerned about the "Return of the Jedi" sell out
for the kiddies factor.
star wars and slashdot give me raging wood.
ftp://24.0.158.203/incoming/menace2.qt
Well, Lucas is writing and directing, which he previously only did for Episode IV.
Unless he's gotten senile in his old age, I think it will be OK.
Too bad we can't get Kubrick for II and III.
Come on, have a little endurance. I'm proud to say that I've not succumbed to the media coverage of this film, and have avoided any and all information regarding it. I can only hope that my experience will be like the one I could not have had with ANH in 1977, entering a theatre with no idea of the masterpiece I was moments from witnessing. I will have no preconceived notions, everything will be a complete and total suprise, and I will enjoy it a hundred times more than you. Uninformed anticipation is only more fun, and ultimately I'll remember May 21st all the better. :)
Anyone heard that there will only be three tickets to a person? Myself and four others will be camping out in order to get the fifteen tickets neccesary to see it twice the first day.. it's worth it
This is total BS. This is just lame excuse to get their counter up. I was watching the thing go literally up a thousand every 5 minutes. They said 13.5 minutes until they release it and that was an hour ago from when I'm writing this.
BAN THE STARWARS COUNTDOWN
SLASHDOT RULES
my bad! it's not there!
heh... kicked me after getting 400 k or so (3x in a row). must be running nt.
The big deal at countingdown was them posting a South Park version of the original trailer that they did themselves. It's an avi, about 14 megs zipped, 23 uncompressed. It's not too bad (though I didn't find it all that amusing).
What are you, insane? That was the best piece of fan animation I've seen in many years -- if you're nonplussed about that, you need to take some serious anti-cynicism medication. For all those who need a belly laugh, get your asses over to countingdown.com!
They accually did have the second trailer, or at least different footage but couldn't post it since they were getting so many threats. Lincon offered screen shots of this from irc yesterday. The south park thing isnt what people hoped for, but I personnaly still think it was great.
I think it's funny, regardless of the hype.
I've converted it to an mpeg and a Real media file for those non-avi people. The MPEG is 14.5MB and the RealMedia file is 8.37MB.
However, I don't have an ftp site with a quota large enough, and firewall prevents me from hosting my own.
But, if your server lets you receive mails of this size, you can email me at venzkm@rpi.edu with subject "star wars real" for the RealMedia file, and subject "star wars mpeg" for the MPEG. It checks for mail every minute..then queues it for the next time..so you should get it within 2 minutes.
That is all.
The MPEG is now 6.44MB, due to the fact that I can't send anything over 10MB.
I had to lower the fram rate a little, but it's still pretty good quality, just not as good as the original.
That is all.
The RealMedia file is now 5.61MB, with no loss of quality..I simply took out support for lower baud rates..which shouldn't matter anyway if you are just playing it locally.
Which means! that this file is better quality than the MPEG, and has a smaller size. go figure.
That is everything.
go to http://www.starwars.com to get the new trailer. It comes in 3 versions, the largest being 25MB and 2.5 minutes. Enjoy.
It goes on to say... THE LIST OF MIRRORS WILL ALSO GO UP AT JEDINET.COM STARWARZ.COM AND NEWSDROID.COM IF YOU CANT GET ON HERE LATER TONIGHT
Maybe this calls for an update to the story on the main slashdot page?
heh, self-explanatory...
:wq
This effect was written about by Larry Niven in a series of stories regarding the effect that teleportation (ala Star Trek) would have on society. A "flash crowd" formed when everybody heard on the news about an interesting event and used their teleporters to hop in and see it. The police had to develop some interesting coping mechanisms.
The "slashdot" effect is the same thing in the web universe. (Similar stuff happens when interesting sites appear on CNN and other sources.)

Interesting concept, but I thought that there were some sort of fcc restrictions on transporting, since it takes up (hypotheticaly) bandwidth in the teleportation frequencies.
^ ~~^~
Interesting world when differing star trek books colide.
The military (federation) was granted its own frequencies/etc and daily house use was not advisable. No where on earth, in Captain Kirk's or Captain Picard's houses were there transporters. They always used shuttles.

great... its the wrong one. I'm using linux and I can't view quicktime movies, and I just checked this on my roommate's computer. sorry for the false alarm there... as soon as someone can give me the REAL trailer I'll put it back up.
I got this from the guy who posted earlier here, and I didn't verify that this was the second trailer before I put it up for download... (I'm using linux and xanim doesn't know what to do with sorensen compression...) oh well. the mirror will be back up once I actually get the trailer. sorry again!

In true Nerd fasion (and due to my omnipitence)... /.'s out and about on the network already? All something like this does is direct the existing traffic (with which I am competing) to a single destination. Maybe if I was attempting to connect with a server on the same backbone as the /. target, I would experience trouble, otherwise...
I considered this. But aren't all the
Maybe so...

The trailer should be available tonight. I was just at CountingDown and they are having hardware problems. The trailer should be about 15 MB when finished (MPG), it's 4.3 GB (AVI) now. Also, there are several shows which will be airing the trailer tomorrow night on TV for those of you not ale to download it. The only one I'm sure of is Entertainment Tonight. Hope this helps.
This is not the second trailer, from what people on IRC are telling me. They say it looks like the teaser with "starwars.com" plastered all over it.
Just fair warning to whoever want to try it.

Well of COURSE it will start all over again with star wars 2.. what are you, stupid?
Listen bud, some of us have been obsessed with this series for the last 20 years. We're not about to stop now, you moron.
Sheesh. Like a guy can't be obsessed with anything anymore..
- Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set him on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
I thought it was pretty damn funny.. Although they should have reworded the original announcement, as it sure as hell sounded like they had the 2nd trailer..

I suspect that Lucas wants people to see it in the theaters first. It will certainly look and sound a lot better there than on our pitiful little PCs.
Once Lucas releases the "real" trailer, I'm sure there will be a large number of well-equipped mirror sites to retrieve it from. Some of them will have pipes big enough to avoid getting Slashdotted.
And then we can tell countingdown.com to go take a flying leap. They really shouldn't tease us like that...
Er, so what is the "big file I am posting tonight," then? That sounds a bit mysterious. Notice the way _moving_ is set off. Hmm.
Or maybe you were (or are about to be) lucky enough to actually get a copy, but don't have any place to serve it up for the masses. Here's a suggestion to put tab A in slot B:
If you get a copy but don't have a site, announce that fact here, along with an offer to anon-ftp it TO anybody's server that's willing to serve it up free. Once you give away a copy, announce that place.
If you have a server, watch for an announcement, and send mail to the first person you see that makes the above offer, giving server details.
That's cruel, I downloaded it and it's just the first trailer. Better looking, but still the first trailer.

Unless this movie ends up burning money on stupid crap, like Waterworld (which cost $400 Million, I think), Lucas will have nothing to worry about. Even if it costs $400M, he'll most likely come out way ahead.
Think about it, all the kids who thought Star Wars was so awesome in the 70s are now the Bill Gateses of the world. With that kind of money in the customer base, the movie will make millions in merchandising alone.
Also, I doubt anybody wants to shut down the sites mirroring the trailer. I mean, it's free advertising.
Maybe now we will get a Spaceballs sequel... haha!

Other people who get annoyed by this.
My best friend says it all the time, and it drives me BERZERK!!!!!
Hey Rob! New poll idea:
"I could care less."
Well... that's my rant for the day...

It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it.

Don't bother downloading that file. As pointed out, it's a preview for Star Trek: Insurrection. Not the much-coveted Phantom Menace preview 2.

They were just teasing us. They just posted a
note saying they won't put it up until the
official site does, or some lame excuse like
that. They spent the whole afternoon putting
up progress reports on the encoding of the
video, and then just decide not to put it up!
Argh!
