Amen about the Austin drivers! I've been here a year and these people are nuts. From the data collected to date, lots of Austinites have no lives and therefore no incentive to arrive at whatever their destination is -- hence the people driving 35 mph in the fast lane. Sometimes I feel like stealing a tank and taking it out on Mopac during rush hour... go too slow and I'll literally run you over and crush you, you slow pieces of road kill!!! And the next time someone crosses three lanes of traffic in a mad dash to get to an exit lane that signs have been warning was coming up for the past 3 miles... one huge shell from the tank right up the car's tailpipe!!! Hahahahahaha!!!
(ahem) About then I realize I've had too many Mountain Dews that day.
And Hell has more Yankees.
Still there. I suspect that they haven't swept the place in 20 years and the bano is scary, but if that brings back fond memories, go for it. Good bands. Just don't take a leak.
What a pity. It has been a few years. Is the food still good?
He is really hitting it hard, isn't he? For personal reasons, this is tough. He has done a lot of good for Austin's Jewish community and continues to do good things. But, he is an asshole and his company uses people up. It is a tough situation, but ultimately I have to say that he has done a lot of harm. I look at it this way:
Anyone can make money by working hard, studying, and applying yourself. It is axiomatic. In America, that is the way it works, barring appalling bad luck (like a crippling accident, for which you should have insurance, by the way). Period. You do what you ought to do, you will make money. Some people see a niche and do very well. That is what Dell (the man) has done, without a lot of application of his skills, either. He is a college dropout and apparently proud of it. That isn't good (the "proud of it" part).
It takes some effort to be pious, but again, anyone who feels sincerely can be pious. Incorporating the lessons into ones life it a lot harder. This is where he has failed.
I think that people fail when they celebrate one of their own for success at the expense of truth, kindness, and so on. Success and assholery are not joined at the hip. One decides to do both, although luck plays some part in the first, especially if one becomes very sucessful.
Dell (the company) exists in the image of Dell (the man). It is a bad place to work. I speak not from personal experience but from seeing many friends go there for years and stay and stay and stay and leave incredibly bitter and very ambivalent about the money that they have made. I have made almost as much in the market by paying attention and I am a happy bofh and feel that the last ten years have been a qualified success for me personally and professionally. I am even considering starting my own company (not singing bohf-o-gram, but close). I know too many people who feel that Dell (the company) wrecked their marraiges, their carreers, and their health -- their lives, in short. So, by my thinking, Dell (the man) is responsible, and he so clearly could care less.
Dell the man and Dell the company are not made up of the sum of, respectively, good public efforts and shareholder value. Neither is bad; quite the contrary. But the bad things that have been done may exceed the good.
I would offer a word of warning: beware of companies that want only young people. They need your energy for a reason -- they want to use it up.
Finally, a cool conference here in Austin. It will be hot though. Awesome, I'm excited.
I came. I saw. I coded.
... I couldn't continue to be an AC if I showed up at Chuy's. Although if it would help me escape the Windows hell I'm currently trapped in, I'll go!
When first I scanned the story, I was amazed, to say the least. Why would the conferrence try to drag in LUGs? I live near the Univ of Washington, where LUGs and BUGS are thick as flies ...
...
...
Then it hit me. Wait, they don't mean those who are "Lesbian Until Graduation" (BUGs are Bisexual Until Graduation), they must mean something else
Only later did I twig to the thought of "Linux User's Groups"
Lemon curry?
Hello, fellow Dell employee. I went to go get lunch at the Whataburger today (11a.m.), and it took me 50min round trip, and I went through the drive through!!!
(for those of you that don't know, the whataburger is only about 1 mile from Dell)
The local Volvo floggers are the worst. My SO always liked them (Volvos, not the pinheads who get them so that they won't be the one who dies in the inevitable accident), and when she was looking at new ones she was told by the salesman that Austin had the highest per capita Volvo ownership in the US. Cabridge was second. That scared the shit out of me. Later that month, I bought an old deisel Suburban with sewer pipe bumpers, and so did she. We have not gotten used to these people. We cannot get used to them -- we can drive, damn it, and we expect them to do so as well. Having a 6000 pound vehicle allows us to not have to worry as much about them pressing the issue. My pet peeve? The turnaround at Windsor southbound on MoPac. That is a fucking yield, damn it. And the APD is just useless. I have never not respected cops before, but they are so clearly interested in revenue generation as opposed to safety. I called them on that one problem and they told me (essentially) that they didn't listen to citizens who complained about specific crossings because everyone had a pet peeve. The fact that my degree was originally CE didn't matter to her. I offered to write a letter. She said that it wouldn't matter. I spoke to her supervisor. He laughed (kind of like the DMV, actually). But apparently if they can issue large, revenue-generating tickets, they move fast ... when they were digging up the street I live on they forbade left turns at an intersection right before (no stops, low volume, no recorded accidents, and yes, I checked, and yes, I knew how to check, and as a real engineer before I was a software engineer, there was no possible justification, TXDoT or AASHTO or local, for what they did) and then they hid behind some bushes for FOUR FUCKING WEEKS trying to issue $200 tickets for violations in a contruction zone. Every morning I would pass them on my way to jousting with death in the form of morons from West Austin in cars and trucks that they clearly couldn't control at the Windsor turnaround. As soon as my SO is done with school, we are splitting. Austin is cool only if you think that Orange County is cool or San Jose is cool. In otherwords, not cool.
I could go on and on about the geometric bizzareness of the roads here. These people have never heard of planning. They think that the best way to manage people speeding is to unsync the lights! They are putting those stupid road humps in all over as well. And they are talking about trying to reduce driver speed by planting bushes to cut sight distances!!! They seem to be taking every crackpot idea that anyone ever had in California and implementing them as fast as they can. I am told that the rest of Texas isn't like this; I do not have any long term exposure. But Austin would drive me crazy if I had to live here for too long.
And no, the hot weather isn't here yet, not at all. Wait until you see temperatures that can actually cook food in parking lots. I always though that they "fry an egg on the sidewalk" stuff was an urban legend. Get a sunny sidewalk here is mid summer and I would bet even money on getting a sizzle.
> 103 for five weeks straight in 90% humidity
Congratulations. You just described Toronto. *sigh* Though to be fair, it's more like 100F but 100% humidity for 3 weeks straight. And you'll get 3 such heat waves between June and September.
Ontario has the crappiest weather on Earth. As I understand Russian diplomats in Ottawa say: "Summers like Nigeria, winters like Siberia."
Cheers,
Richard
Ahh, yes. The cop bar. I preferr men who preferr men who also aren't married. Ethics and all. I will like to see how Oilcan's is. It was always fun.
It hasn't even started yet and the year has been mild so far. You will be thinking about walk-in freezers in a different way come August ...
Actually, the 9th level of Hell was a huge sheet of ice with Lucifer frozen in the center. :) I think he had three heads and was chewing on Judas, Brutus and Cassius, but I could be mistaken.
I worked there for five years. I made sone (not much) money on stock options. I nearly ended my relationship with the woman who became my wife and I am still "recovering." It isn't worth it. Let me warn you off from looking at Dell (those of you who are still in school and reading this).
First, Dell treats you like shit unless you are bringing in sales. Systems work is adirect hit to the bottom line, so you are generally disliked. There is a caste sytem at Dell and techs are at the very bottom. Like feeling like a slave? You will be at home at Dell. And expect to work at least 60 hours a week or be written up for attitude problems.
Next, Dell doesn't pay shit. Bottom line. Unless you are in sales or marketing (the soul of the company, if that isn't warning enough), you will make less than half what you are worth at Dell. For example, I was making $40,000 at Dell. I left and my first offer was $85,000. I have (now) fourteen years of PC experience going back to PCNFS and DOS and am an MCSE and a CNE. Dell would not pay and will not pay because the Austin job market always has someone just out of school who will do it cheaper. And if you think that $40,000 is a good living, you don't now how expensive Austin is.
Finally, there is no job security at Dell. I knew way to many people who annoyed someone senior and were walked out that day. Dell treats the workers like coal mines a hundred years ago treated the workers. I saw a tech who was wearing a shirt like another tech who had pissed someone off get walked out despite everyone saying that he hadn't left the building all day so he couldn't possibly have made it to Braker to piss somone off. When they found that they had made a mistake, they fired the "right guy" too. No, they didn't rehire the first tech. And all of us (about six people) who protested when they were walking the first guy up were written up for "insubordination." Try working while looking over your shoulder 24/7. And Dell tends to find a reason to fire people right before they would get vested, if they get older, if they are white males and they are facing another EEOC probe, if a woman or minority accused an non-woman and/or non-minority of harrassment of any kind (there is not attemp to discern facts -- you get fired on the spot), and if they need to make EOQ numbers.
I don't say this easily, but I would say the Dell is "bad" as in "evil." I destroys your self confidence, makes you bitterly unhappy, and makes you think that it is your fault. It really does "use you up." It is a horrible place to work and I wish that I never had started there. I do not now anyone there who has stayed more than 18 months who isn't grimly hanging on for the stock options. It is a really awful place, run by really bad people in really bad ways. It is not a good place to learn, it is not a good place to "cut your teeth" on anything, and it is not even a good place to be from. It strips you of your dignity and makes you used to abuse.
If you are at Dell, consider whether anything there will ever change. How many times have you promised yourself "If [X] doesn;t change by [X] date, I'm outta here." And then you stay. It will never get better. Leave.
If you are thinking of working at Dell, think about why the employment people never let you talk to current employees. There is a reason for that.
Dell sucks. Hard.
They might even give you a dollar if you do it on Guadalupe :)
Well, I'm not forking out that kind of cash to ZD by any means, but I'll certainly make the trip from Dallas for a gettogether.
/.-con" Wheeeeeeee.

...but I'm not going to scotch doing LinuxWorld this year just to do the close-by conference. I can't budget the costs myself for this one and my employer's picking up the entire tab for Linux World. If I can get them to foot the bill for this one as well, I'll show... :->
I am not merely a "consumer" or a "taxpayer". I am a Citizen of the State of Texas
Really? It's not even going yet. Wait a couple of weeks when the state jumps into the triple digits- then the fun begins. Personally, I plan on spending a LOT of time in my new pool this year! ;-)
I am not merely a "consumer" or a "taxpayer". I am a Citizen of the State of Texas
I know. I was trolling. Mea culpa. But ... I would argue with the "strongest in Texas" unless you are talking about dollar volume (as opposed to innovation and financial health overall -- Austin is a great place for startups to fail as well as start up). And UT's CS program is not what it used to be (I know, I was there), and a lot of what it used to be was "star" professors who never taught. I think I did OK, but not as well as friends at Rice or MIT. Dallas isn't bad, neither is Houston, and both have a lot more big iron work. Austin is OK, just a little too PC-centric for me.
...it's a dry heat. Houston is so humid! This is the beginning of my first summer in Texas and I happen to live in Houston. What was I thinking? :)
"Dogs and cats, living together...it's mass hysteria!"
And the lower deck of IH-35, the single most lethal stretch of IH-35 overall, from Mexico to Canada (or maybe it's Chicago).
That's because so many of them are young and in school.
...
Compare the responses to the ones from people in Dallas and Houston, i.e., "Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude" vs. "where's the fscking technical content or are you [sound of a hammer being drawn back] wasting my time."
Now back to my Oracle
I'm in Houston right now, and I have to say the only difference between the 9th level of Hell and Texas is that Hell is 10 degrees cooler.
DrLunch.com The site that tells you what's for lunch!
Yup. The "Anti-Destination League." Motto: "Nowhere to go and all day to get there."
San Antonio can wear on you, but everytime I go up the road, I cannot believe that I put up with it for as long as I did. I vividly recall getting so angry that I felt like I was going to have a stroke at least once a week. See, I like my car. A lot. I like cars in general, mine in particular. Just like I like UNIX and nice tools. I got to know two excellent body shops that worked on MBs (The Body Shop and Ed's Body and Frame, NEVER take a Mercedes to Continental Cars -- never, never, never) because of the drivers. Grrrr...
I'm in Dallas, but I'll make the drive. Count me in for an outing.
Save the whales. Feed the hungry. Free the mallocs.
I think Hole in the wall is still there, looked kinda dank so I never ventured in, but it is still there.
A little further up the street is Showdown, home of the infamous "Happy Minutes" -- 15:00-15:30 every weekday you can get $.25 beers, one at a time (CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, etc.). I remember when it was $.10 and a questionable bargain ...
But I also remember when Austin wasn't a smoggy, incredibly overpriced, traffic choked place even more pretentious than Dallas, just a little hippy town.
I think that I will sit this one out. Too long from El Paso (12 hour drive).
Have fun. Remember the advice that never failed me: when in doubt, take half!
Austin's great!
Being in Austin, I'd have to say that it's a really good place for this conference. It's always been a strong technical and *NIX town, and it's *gasp* not on the east or west coast, which means the suits won't be able to find it.
It's actually not that bad over the summer. Now Houston... that's where the heat and humidity combo get you. We'll crank up the a/c for ya and serve up some Tex-Mex. Come on down!
woohoo! finally something i can GO to. i hate all the "should we have XYZ conference on the east coast or on the west coast" crap.
now i just need $350...

At least I can laugh about it now. I remember how pissed off I used to get when I would get hassled for change by someone who was smoking better cigs than I could afford.
And I married the right chick -- I mentioned the deal and she said "Ahh Austin. Cheap drugs and freshmen. Those were the days
Ahhh ... you just answered that. Sorry. Good that the food is fine. Where is he now (yes, I am a food groupie, sad but true)?
Oilcan's is still going strong. It's not really my kind of place, though. I've always preferred the Chain Drive at Cesar Chavez and Red River. It's a leather bar. :o)
In Austin, no one would even notice.
They have some BSD speakers there (McKusick and Vixie), so I don't see why you can't take a liberal interpretation of "UG".
/.ers want to have a BOF meeting at Oilcan Harry's (if it is still there)! Were not loud or proud, but we have root, so watch your mouth, boy!
Don't feel oppressed by the Linux masses. Or, stop being so paranoid! The smartest sysadmins are typically BSD people, but they are always so damned touchy. BSD seems to turn normal, healthy, twenty-something sysadmins into grunpy old men. Take a pill and hang with it, man. Several people in these threads have said "have fun" or something like that. I will be there. Do I care if Solaris gets slammed? Hell no, I will be drunk and unruly (if everything goes according to plan;))! I hope to see you there as well, drunk, and slurring your words as you tell me why the FreeBSD stack is far better. I will nod and have another beer.
Austin isn't New Orleans, but it can still be fun! Any
Every time I see austin come up in a story, the austin-based /.'ers come out of the woodwork... there seem to be a lot of them! I think we need to organize an outing - go see how Chuy's can cope with the slashdot effect.
Actually... that's not a bad idea in general. Might be fun to organize outings for slashdotters around the world...
HA! I made the opposite move. I lived in El Paso and moved to Austin, after a short stay in Amarillo. The only thing I liked better about El Paso is it was 110 and DRY, instead of Austin's 105 and 95% humidity...
Is anyone else suspicious as to why ZD, of all companies, is sponsoring this? This is, of course, our friend Berst's company.
This hardly looks like something a Linux geek should be excited about going to. Looks like they're targeting PHBs. Who knows what will happen - will they try to point them TOWARD open source, spew FUD about open source, or (heaven forbid) try to be objective?
We could meet at the Chuy's down by zilker on Saturday June 12th. It would be best not to go at prime time (read: Lunch) so how about 3 pm? I'll wear my copyleft shirt!! hehe Does this sound like decent idea to anyone else?

Knock yourself out.
I resemble that remark!
Hole in the Wall still around?
Is this a Linux only discount? Or do *BSD User Groups get a discount as well?
Given the code is "UG" and not "LUG" I assume it's open to all the user groups, but it'd be nice to know for sure.
N
Just wear a mask and don't give your name.
The food's still pretty darn good, though.
Think they'd mind if I kept an electronic log of the entire conference? If not, I find the whole thing vaguely ironic.
Thanks, that would be great... (at least it would be great if I had ever used AIX before)
Well, put your resume on Monsterboard and so on and specify that you are looking for Austin (by putting the word "Austin" in a whole lot). The pimps will start calling in a week or so. Try to find jobs directly by going to www.austin360.com and looking in the Austin American-Fishwrap's classified search section (put in "UNIX", and get 200 responses) and calling the listed pimps. Somebody will pay relocation expenses and you are there, with a job.
That certain company always has AIX support positions open in the same building. Start there and move now, that way you can switch later. Don't expect to be paid much, though.
Since all the Austin folks are here....
Anyone know of a good Jr. level Linux programming and/or sys admin job in Austin?
I've been trying to get a job with a certain company's upcoming Linux Support Center, but they've been telling me "any day now" since December! They're just not ready to hire yet. AAARGH.
Still living in rainy Oregon,
Micah
I know that DejaNews has part of their operations based in Austin... (In the arboretum) And I also know that they are looking for some really highly skilled/hardcore Linux Admins... Plus People that are godlike with INN. Ya might want to check out their employment link on their website...
:-/
Anywho.. Austin Does have a decent amount of *nix jobs.. but for folks like me (Crazy NT admins) I'm actaully having to relocate to Milwaukee to get a decent paying NT Admin job.
