I've been running a multihead system (Riva 128 AGP & Voodoo 3000 PCI) for a while and I really like it. I was suprised when the two cards came up togethor without any real effort (XFree86 -configure rocks BTW), however, when I recompiled my 2.2.x kernel to include support for SMP the machine would lock about half the time I tried to start X for the first time since the machine had been rebooted. After I got X started it was no problem until the next reboot. I suspect there's some sort of problem in the int10 code for softbooting the second monitor with SMP. Oh well. I just upgraded to debian woody and compiled a 2.4 test kernel and the problem seems to be fixed, I havn't had any problems softbooting the second card since.
Just my two cents, someone else might find them interesting or useful.
Okay, everyone might consider me a nutbag for this one, but I've had run-ins with carpel tunnel and have tried differient remidies with good results. First off, get yourself a chiropractor. In my experience chiropractors can do wonders for carpel. Also, and this is the weirdest of all, go get yourself a pair of those energy bracelets. The copper kind with the embedded magnets. I've loaned mine to several of my geek friends for just a few hours and they always end up ordering a pair. I got into them before the TV adds were around, as my mother is a chiropractor (suprise!) and she got me one for my birthday. I thought she was a total nutbag, but I wore it anyway just to humor her, and just a few hours later it felt like my wrists had been greased. Movement was painless and easier than it had been in recent memory, so I ordered anther one for my other wrist. Anyway, I suggest you at least get a pair of these copper bracelets, because it is well worth it. I'm not totally sure where you can buy a pair, but I can get them for something like $27.00 each. I'm not trying to make a sale here, I'd much rather not have to deal with it, but if you're unable to find them anywhere else let me know and I'll hook you up.
I've been watching you add awesome functionality and stable bug fixes into the linux kernel for years, and I must admit, it makes me drool. I was just wondering if you had any pointers for a little wanna-be kernel hacker like myself to become a full fledged kernel hacker. I'm not asking you to teach a couse or hold my hand, but I'd just like to get pointed in the right direction. What would you recommend as excersizes to become more filmillar with the kernel's inner workings?
I've never built a machine with a phoenix bios. I've always hated phoenix, it's cumbersome and doesn't have all the neat little configuration options the others do. If they want to run off and put adds on post that's just peachy, I don't care, though I really doubt this will fly with the big boys. If (for example) Dell boxes are shipping with a cute little AOL ad plastered on the screen at boot they'er going to want a cut, I guarantee it.
I doubt it. I don't see how the Unix comment could have been taken out of context. I was running the SETI client on 4 boxes, but their down now, and I don't plan to bring them back up. I'm not going to give them my help if they don't want it. Someone insults you and you defend them and then continue to further their cause, SETI@HOME will just have to search for extraterrestrial life without my extra cycles.
Me and 10 friends went and got tickets early and stood in line. We're a mix of hackers and near computer illeratities. I, being more of the hacker type, highly approved. All the non-geeks dug it too, it's an awesome flick, I highly approve. Go see it as soon as you can and avoid any spoilers, I had no idea what it was about and I really liked it that way. This is really worth the trouble of waiting in line and getting a good seat.
What was FSF's motivation? Why did the FSF write all these great tools? If they don't like what's going on, they should make steps to change it. If RMS doesn't like Linux being called Linux insted of 'GNU/Linux', he can get fuct and go off and work on his little happy hurd kernel thingy.... The point I'm trying to make is simple, If RMS et al doesn't approve the current situation, they should make steps to correct it. I'm actually shocked that everyone is saying that the FSF is responsible for all the great things that have happened with linux because they wrote the C compiler?, I thought these 'I started it so I own it' ideas were resricted to the corporate world, and everything that I thought RMS was against... guess I was wrong. They should write their own kernel or something, I don't care if they go take a flying fuck, I think this whole thing is stupid.
I'm Looking to make a mp3 box for my brother's car, I just need something with onboard NIC & Sound, the video just needs to be there so it will boot. The size of the finished package is my primary convern. I don't want to wait to get my hands on the little empeg thingy to come out, he's leaving town in a few weeks.
This is AWESOME. I LOVE IT! You've gotta be fuck'in kidding me! This is one of the funniest things I've heard all week. I think this is great! Some ALL MIGHTY law firm pissed off by a couple of guys fuking around with their dinky little yahoo uids.
Maybe I'm the only one that finds real humor in this, but I think it's priceless.
Actually, the configurations undergo a rather good testing process. I'm not in a position of authority, but I doubt Dell will ship anything that doesn't pass the same tests, and they'd have to be morons to even attempt the stunt, it's common knowledge that winmodems don't work on Linux, even to Dell.
So, this guy is supposed to be some sort of Sysadmin? That's just part of running a server, this guy sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about. I'll bet it's a 50/50 Unix/NT shop, and this guy's really the NT admin. It just seems odd to me that he'd badmouth all the vendors because he doesn't know how to run his server.
Wow. It's nice to see somebody finally calling ESR like he is.
ESR does more harm than good, IMO.

For all I know this could be a placebo, but it's worked very well for me and a number of my friends. I don't know what to tell you.

The Chair LOOKS comphy, but their web page made me motion sick. I bet it's not a pleasent to work in as it looks.
Annoying bastards.

Finally, a cool conference here in Austin. It will be hot though. Awesome, I'm excited.
This reminds me of the movie sneakers, anyone else?

Is it really relevent? You yourself are not sure of the facts, why dis on Katz?
Wow, I didn't think people like you really existed.
