    Considdering that there are lots of websites where Germans rate hotels, restaurants and the like and tell their experience, and I don't hear a lot about all those people and websites getting sued, I guess that your friend was very unlucky. Or maybe the situation was a little mor complicated than what you told us.

    If the EU really wants to force the issue, google can just threaten to withdraw from Europe. We will see how well that goes over with the people.

    The European market is to big and to important for a company like Google to withdraw from it over such a small thing.

    They didn't pull out of Europe after the Streetview fiasco, why should they now?

    Plus, this isn't an EU wide thing but only effects Germany.

    Does the EU have any other purpose than harassing US companies? This is 10+ year old news.

    Microsoft has a legally binding contract with the EU.
    It seems like Microsoft broke that contract.
    The EU investigates.
    Where exactly is the harassment?

    On a side note: The EU also investigates European companies in the same way if they break anti-trust laws. One example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8140024.stm

    My opinion is that the default option should always be choice, and will I always oppose having someone make the decision for me. And everyone else should learn that having a choice matters.

    With a yes/no toggle, there is always a choice made for you in the beginning.
    Either DNT is 'on', or it is 'off'.

    As enough people have pointed out already DNT is doomed to fail anyway: As soon as people are starting to use it in great numbers, the advertisers are going to not follow it anymore.

    Yes. Sky Deutschland is owned by Murdoch and pushes Murdochs policy. (Germany's largest pay TV provider according to wikipedia.)

    That's true.
    But your missing one relevant point: Pay TV doesn't mean shit in Germany.
    Murdoch can influence more or less nothing here.

    But we have or own 'Murdochs': The Axel Springer AG is News Corp. in German.

    Apple had already established it's iPhone design and has images of such from 2005. This unfulfilled prototype was from 2006.

    The prototypes from Samsung could still be relevant if Apples design where not released by that time. In that case Samsungs designs could show that two parties where having the same ideas independently.

    Yes. As we now EVERYONE who does not rule in favor of Android MUST BE a pro-Apple shill and paid by them.

    As an AC it is hard to take you serious, but let's jsut try for a minute:

    Samsung tried to enter early designs of their into the trial.
    Even though that seems to be reasonable, the judge did not allow it.

    Later, Apple mentioned these designs during trial.
    Normally, that should open the door for Samsung to talk about these design.
    But no, the judge won't have any of this.

    If it was the other way round, can you honestly say that you wouldn't have doubts whether the judge might be biased in some way?

    That something isn't classified as secret doesn't mean that it is widely or easily available.

    EULAs where pretty much unenforceable in Europe (or Germany, at least) already.
    Since the customer usually gets to read the EULA after the purchase, the EULA is not part of the contract.

    This isn't true for Germany (and the rest of the EU AFAIK).
    Courts over here have ruled years ago that taking OEM software licenses out of a bundle and selling them separately is legal.
    Microsoft was not amused, but have (kind of) learnt to live with it.

    And Jelly Bean - I haven't yet see everyone move from GingerBread to ICS, and already they are in JellyBean?

    Well, my Archos tablet came with Honeycomb and got an upgrade to ICS early this year.
    A few smartphone that where sold with Gingerbread have upgrade to ICS.

    So if you haven't seen anybody upgrade the problem might be yiour sample pool.

    On the other hand, if its off by default then only those who care about privacy and know about this option will turn it on.

    There, fixed that for you.

    The people who know about this option are those that know how to install Adblock or Noscript in the first place.
    So the as long as DNT is not on by default, it hardly makes any difference for the advertisers, but they can claim that they respect the wishes of the users.

    Meaning if DNT is off by default it is mostly meaningless.

    Opera browsers already have a filtering mechanism build in. What they are missing is a list of stuff to filter.

    Just search the web for an urlfilter.ini, download that, put it on your Android device and point Opera Mobile to it.

    The first rewards (smallest reward levels) have arrived at the backers.
    Some more of the products are finished and will be send in the next days.

    But yes, there was once again a setback. But just as with the printing of SS&DT Rich isn't to blame. And unlike the SS&DT printing he did inform us fans in a timely fashion, so he did learn from past mistakes.

    How many members of the Kennedy family did hold office?
    How many members of the Bush family did or do hold office?

    I'm sure that on closer inspection only a small fraction of US politicians could be labeled as belonging to such a 'clan', but those families tend to be quite visible.

    And many (once again: not all) people who run for offices like the president tend to be rather wealthy or at least very well connected. Current example is obviously Mitt Romney.

    Well, you should not translate the German 'abstrus' with 'abstruse'. Used in this sentence, the translation would be 'absurd'.

    So she is denying the claim, if a bit weakly.

    BTW, if you want to translate single words or short phrases from English into German or vice versa, I suggest using leo.org: http://dict.leo.org/ende?lang=en&lp=ende&search=

    This offers several possible translations instead of just one that may not be the right one for the given context.

    But that's not what Carpathia would want. To them, a lot of the value is in the hardware. They would want the original hardware back with files intact and that's not going to happen anytime soon unless either DoJ dismisses the case or MegaUpload pleads guilty

    Why do you think Carpathia cares about the files?
    They care about the hardware, because it's theirs and it's costing them money without generation revenue.
    The files on the servers are Megaupload's.
