  1. Re:Good strategy for MS on Microsoft Unveils "Elevate America" · · Score: 1

The owning class already has already extracted as many resources as they easily can

Not all wealth comes from resources extracted. (Extracted from where?). It is possible to create wealth from intangibles and services because of the value that paying people put to these items.

It's a sad fact that ability is not distributed equally. Plus attitudes about work are inherited from parents and your local society, things you don't have control of.

America ... needs jobs to put those people in to.

Rather than finding work for people with computer skills, how about finding problems that need to be solved and seeing which require computer skills and hiring those people.

That has always been my problem with the H1-B program. We bring in a bunch of workers that are easily exploited and that hurts everyone.

If the tables were turned, then I may want to be "exploited" temporarily if that will lead to a Green Card later on, at which point I compete equally and (if my skills are useful) I will cost more. I will no longer be exploited then.

And "hurts everyone" is not accurate. Any program helps some and hurts others. The question is where you fall under this.

You may be shocked by your reading and your restatement of this person's opinion. But why don't you wait till this person agrees to your restatement before you say "wow".

I think that people on both sides of the H1B issue may believe that H1Bs are more cost effective (to the corporation) than hiring locals, within some error. The question is whether allowing this is good for the country as a whole.

As a taxpayer and someone in favor of H1Bs, can't I ask that my taxes be used in the most cost-effective way?

If you take the set of 'rich' people and remove those who had rich parents, you will end up with a group who by their genes made them smart and risk-takers, and that's why they are rich. It's not "fair" that some people had rich parents, and had good upbringing, etc. Remove that, and it's still not "fair" that some people are genetically smarter and bolder than others. We all have to live with that.

Our county in Illinois uses both optical scan machines and touch-screen voting machines. I asked the election commission via its website what plans there are to handle a case where the electronic voting machine returns more votes than there are registered voters. The reply was that since they test for all possibilities this would not happen. (Sigh.)

As I read his answer, it occurred to me that H1B's are to "local" workers what a Honda/Toyota is to Detroit. 'Competition is good' can be applied to people as well as companies. If you're a manager you want to hire someone who has the hunger and drive that growing up poor can give you, and as a worker you want to be working with someone competent.

But that's just business. If you had the same situation in your own business (lots of current customers, some potential ones but takes some money/effort to get them), you'd do the same thing. There's only so much time/effort one has each day. It may be better in the long run to "build it and collect when they come" but that's their call. No law against being shortsighted.

The crisis in *this* case is someone not doing their homework.
