Exactly, that is the way I was reading it also. I'd love to be able to travel from World of Warcraft to Entropia Universe to Second Life to whatever and keep my avatar name, profile, and some other misc info I've added to all my accounts. It'd be pretty neat if I could also walk into some kind of teleporter or portal to transfer from one to the other and that would cause the software necessary to enter that world to fire up and shutdown the other worlds software or leave it open I guess.
Something like Second Life SLURL's which allow one to add a URL to a web page that will ultimately take you to a location in Second Life by firing up the the Second Life client and take you to the location.
It's not really a big hassle to fire up each client but it would be cool. As far as carrying my info from world to world that would be way cool along with my payment info. Granted that would be another whole kettle of fish.
The future does look bright and yes I do wear shades!
I always wondered back then if Rob on Slashdot was the same Rob from the enlightenment development. Oh man did I love that thing, even if it kept crashing and was sometimes soo slow.:-) The themes one could down load for it were just so cool and so customizable for the time.
Thank you, thank you , thank you!!! I can hardly believe I just read this on slashdot! I too remember all the doom sayers who were against XP. I remember in particular that the new network stack was going to destroy the internet supposedly. And why? Because Microsoft actually fully implemented the TCP/IP stack that Unix and Unix like systems had been using for years.
I had been reading so much anti-vista crap last fall from all over that I finally decided I had to buy Vista to see what the real problems were and did so last spring.
Granted I did buy a new dell system to go with it, I didn't upgrade any of my XP systems at home so I don't know what the upgrade experience is like. And I will never know as I stopped using upgrade procedures with all the OS's I use (XP, 2000 Pro, various linux distros and OS X) years ago. Clean installs for those who don't mind the time involved are the only way to go, IMO.
Anyways, I found Vista (Oh I decided to go whole hog and got Ultimate) to be fun to use, once I got used to the new locations and ways of doing things. Does Vista have issues, well with my system it has a few, mainly with updating games and that is with UAC, which I've purposely left on just to see if it was really all that annoying. It's not, again IMO. No different then having to enter my sudo password when installing via the GUI on CentOS.
Drivers? Well my 7 year old Canon printer, attached to my Windows 2000 server installed its driver on Vista with no problems and that means its actually using an XP driver since I didn't have a Vista driver on the server. I decided I'd be daring and see what would happen. That doesn't prove that there aren't driver problems or shortages but the people who nag nag nag about Vista talk as if every user is going to experience every single problem that anyone has ever found with Vista. Yeah right! My nvidia graphics card on the Vista machine had some minor issues till nvidia released their most recent driver and the problem went away, though that same driver set seems to have introduced some problems on one of my XP machines with WOW and SecondLife.
Basically it comes down to what you said, Vista will rock in time I suspect. Are there issues? Yeah like there is with every single OS I've ever used including various Linux flavors, don't get me stared on RedHat Linus ES 5 for instance! (We're in the process of upgrading our RedHat AS 4 and AS 3 servers at work):-)
I just had to respond to a positive comment on slashot, there are way too few in my opinion. Not just about Microsoft but so many subjects over the last number of years. I know this comment won't make any real difference here but it would be so nice to see a little more informed discussion on slashdot again. I used to actually learn things by reading the comments here but that's getting to be rare now. I suppose that is part of Web 2.0 too!! LOL
Avatar8, awesome response and description of what some found wrong with UO. I also used to play though not at your level. I also played Diable II and Starcraft, online, at the time. I got so tired of griefers, spammers, etc that I simply dropped out of the online game playing in 2002-2003. I went back to playing single player games like the Myst series, or Quake, Doom 2, Duke Nukem. At that same time I had read about a new virtual world called Second Life that sounded kind of intriguing but it also sounded like a perfect place for more griefing so I passed.
In the fall of 2005 I read another article about Second Life and that it had a free membership option. I figured what the heck, lets check out the online gaming world again and got a Second Life account. After checking out the world for a month I got a premium account and have been in Second Life ever since.
After playing in that world for a year I decided it would be a good idea to check out some of the actual online games again. Having heard constantly about WOW I decided to try it out. After getting a trial disk and logging in the first time I was immediately impressed with the user interface. Blizzard in my opinion has always done a great job here. After playing WOW for around 6 months now I still enjoy it. I can log in for an hour or so then come back in a few days and enjoy some more exploring. Very little griefing from what I've seen and while there is farming going on it certainly doesn't affect my play.
WOW is very approachable, unlike games like Entropia Universe which I also play and enjoy. Or EVE that I'm now trying out. Fun but in my opinion not for every one. WOW on the other hand seems to be very easy to understand and get around in. For any age, for those interested in the WOW type of game play which can be easy or hardcore it seems.
One thing that I find great these days is the abundance of virtual worlds to play in. If I made more money I'd probably join even more of these worlds! Of course then I'd have no personal life at all!
This is so typical, actually this was not Miscrosft's fault at all.
We license Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for all our public schools and when this issue happened we talked with our Symantec reps and they admitted that they had screwed up. Microsoft had given them plenty of time and the specs necessary to avoid this issue with SP2 but Symantec dropped the ball. They basically got busy with other things and kinda forgot about this, according to the Symantec tech support person we were dealing with at the time.

You know, the more I read about Linus and come across his statements, whether others agree with him or not, I do like his frankness.

They fixed it pretty quickly which was nice.
