You must be high. But your comments fit your name. I personaly find it interesting and disturing at the same time because it makes some rather large assumptions it's not very well spun and it makes me really worry about the future of computing. It's not only my hobby but also my career. I fear that they could use their stong arm tactics to gain profit regaurdless of who is using it.
I understand what they are posting in their propaganda would be true for the begining computer user but I fail to see how they could figure that the begining user could end up with a computer system that lacks an operating system. Also I would be interested to see if they have numbers on this.
Being in the industry and working closly with several OEMs some large some small I have never seen what they are describing to begin with. All of the OEMs I have ever had any dealings with have a burn in time for their hardware. Usually at least 24 hours to make sure all the hardware in the system works. Also to get a dirrect count of how many bad components they have. Most of these components are bought in bulk and guaranteed only for a percentage to be working. So the earlier they can get a count of the defective units the better they can judge if they got ripped off or not. The OEMs I have worked with that sell bare bones systems - OS and perinstalled software. Use things like PC dos or Linux to test their hardware prior to shipping it off to the customer non of them used Microsoft Products in their testing.
I hope you come back and raed this and can better understand now how this is not just "a sales piece" but rather disturbing statement by microsoft about their buisness practices and how desparate they are for buisness that doesn't really want them.
I could not see them doing this and living more than a few months. I know there is a percentage of people who would pay for this service but the instance it happened demand would increase for an alternative eager to please programers will work double time to get the next evolution of napster up and running i.e. all the varients that are currently out there. Then these people who would pay for the napster service will be faced with this are they going to pay for the napster service and be called dumb or will they quickly adopt its successor. I have a feeling no matter what anyone says now if this happens the outcome will be bleak for napster.
This is the only reason I wouldn't pay for such a service.
I was under the impression from previous interactions with patents that once they have been in the public domain and no actions have been taken by the company to prevent it or detur it then the neglegence on the companies part allows the patent to become public domain. Can anyone say if this is fact or not?
The possiblity of a computer driven robot beating the average human is very high. Given that is has the appropriate resources, i.e. sensors for its environment etc.
Look at most modern jets and how they are controled at high speeds no longer exclusivly by the pilot but a mix of pilot and onboard computer.
I think this is what most people are thinking of when they talk about running linux to control the battle bot.
One good place I could see this improving some of the bots are the pick axe bots. I have seen a few of them on battlebots and robotwars and the biggest hampering they have is the inability to hit a target. Imagine if you had a computer and sensors that could automaticaly decide when it can get a hit and will only release then. That way every press of the button gets a hit. These bots could really do some big damage like that.

this is a link off the page can you say cookie cutter. We know how they can afford it now they sure didn't spend it on the website.
13:48:05 AOL Instant Messenger: You have been disconnected from the AOL Instant Message Service (SM) for accessing the AOL network using unauthorized software. You can download a FREE, fully featured, and authorized client, here
http://www.aol.com/aim/download2.html .
Just let everyone get the source once modify it as they see fit and post it to various sites and create a bigger mess for MPAA. Then they won't be able to just go after a single source set but multiple variations of it. It could be even compound to the point that they might consider just abandoning their worries over it and life will go on.
Then I wouldn't have to open up slashdot and find the most recent exciting news is a bunch of pricks with a lot of money are throwing another temper tantrum because things aren't going their way.
I read it and can't belive it. I hope this judge isn't an idiot. Cause that is what it would take to read that and think for even a second that they were doing anything but grasping for straws. Trying to say anything do anything to get the percieved threat out of the way.
I think it is interesting how far java has come but am I the only one who fails to see what all the hopla is about. Is it about the companies who got together to actually agree on something. Is it the marketing people read and propigate without knowing what it really means. Someone please enlighten me. Please not some fanatic who is on the bangwagon just to be a part of something, just someone who knows the true importance of it and can explain it without telling me it runs on a lot of platforms.
I looked all over and I couldn't find any reference that this was anything other than a comcast specific TOS agreement. I dug around the actual @home site and this is what I've found.
Have we become so hungry for controversy that we atack @home for something that with a little research is so obviously not their problem. Though they lend their name to the product I'm sure that a majority of what goes on with the services is left up to the cable provider.
I use @home so I read through the user agreement and guess what. I found it to be very lenient and common sence oriented. Also after reading between the lines I'm a lot less scared of being kicked off the service for doing what I do every day than when I started reading this thread listening to all the people who have failed to educate themselves on the topic.
P.S. I know the spelling sucks it's a discusion not my doctorial thesis.
Can't wait to be sitting in the movie theater and have some 15 year old kid pop up and voice his plans for world domination. Prolly won't be long before that happens I mean given the MPAA's DVD fiasco. It's amazing how poorly they seem to impliment some of the greatest achievements in technology.
And the cost of that prodcut is more than most peoples homes. There are simpler products out there that are webbased and functional for what he is asking. Check the PHP site and look at projects there are 2 I think there the most advanced being keystone. There is also a group on sourceforge working on a product called php helpdesk I liked there idea and I plan on contributing as much as I can to their project. If you have money to burn check out the Support Magic Product I have used it before and it was adiquate but it was very pricey and the liscencing got even worse as we put more people on it. Eventually we were forced to hire a programming group to create our own from scratch because it was more economical that owning Support Magic.
I think your a nut. None of this is about the documents and if they were or weren't placed in the discussion. It's about further tarnishing the image of microsofts global dominance and bringing to light their shady buisness practices. It was a discussion were articles where brought in as "evidence" to provoke though and give insight. The reason it happens like this is just due to the nature of open source. Everyone is a part of it even if you haven't written a line of code. We all help to encourage and shape how it grows. By not taking a stance that this is a discussion group we allow ourselves to be cheated out of free speech. This isn't something I would like to see happen and surely andover recognizes if they were to let it happen someone somewhere would start up the next slashdot and all the userbase they have built up would slowly migrate that way.

Even here big brother watches you. I remember when a hit counter was all you needed to know about the popularity of a site.
